    Why is it important to use phrasal
    verbs?
    Used like normal verbs, you can easily
    replace a long list of words with a simple
    phrasal verb. This makes the
    conversation in English more natural and
    fluid, changing the language and making
    it more friendly and easy to understand.
    Phrasal verbs = verb +
    particle.
    The particle looks like a
    preposition, but it doesn't
    function as a preposition.

     He woke up at 6:30 a.m.


     Strangers woke him up.
    PARTICLES
    Particles are part of the verb phrase, and they
    often change the meaning of the verb.

    Most transitive phrasal verbs are
    separable”.

    The object can come after the phrasal verb or between
    the verb and the particle.
    BE CAREFUL!
    When the object is a pronoun, it must come between the
    verb and the particle.

    INTRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS DO NOT HAVE OBJECTS.

    He grew up in Egypt.

    No Object

    She will hang up before she gets into her car.

    Intransitive phrasal verbs do not have
    objects.
    BE CAREFUL!
    Note the difference in meaning between make,
    make up (transitive), and make up (intransitive).

    I make up dinner every night.

    He made up a story about Jill and Joe.


    make up = invent
    (transitive)
    make up= reconcile
    (transitive) They made up. They were friends again
    Among the most common phrasal verbs or most recognized phrasal verbs in
    English, we find the following:

    Fall down: caerse Hang out: salir

    Wake up: despertarse Hurry up: darse prisa

    Get up: levantarse Jump at: atacar

    Fight off: ahuyentar Hold on: esperar

    Give away: regalar Hang up: colgar

    Cry out: llorar desesperadamente Look up: mirar hacia arriba

    Eat up: devorar Look forward to: anhelar

    Take off: quitarse; despegar Pass on: pasar, compartir

    Let go: dejar ir Give up: rendirse, darse por vencido


    Put back: poner en su sitio
