BARANGAY BAYABAS BRIEF HISTORY
A long time ago, according to prominent folks of Barangay Bayabas, the place was
called “ BANGKEROHAN” a local dialect, meaning fish port, which serves as a meeting place
for our fishermen and a waiting area for fish vendors and transacts for daily fish
trading.
Along the shore was a big Bayabas (guava) tree that fisherfolk used as a landmark for
their place. The guava tree stands big and bears abundant fruits, the roots sprawled
farther that reaches the sea, rotten leaves and fruits use to feed the fishes in the
shore, its shade was also a convenient area for the fisher as their favorite resting
place.
Fishermen used that guava tree as their site marker when they embark on their boat (Banca)
from the shore. Some of our Muslim brothers using “pangko” sea vessels for transporting
their business in our place they also used the tree as their market for the place.
Many neighboring barangay visit the place to fetch water from a nearby ‘atabay” a
water well of the late Candido Maandig, Sr. located a walking distance from the Bayabas
tree. The said water was the best tasting water for drink compared to other places, when
asked where they got the water they said, the water is from Bayabas.
As the business of our place progresses, our “lab-aseras” bring their catch to
consolation, a neighboring barangay, and the people were asked then where they got their
fishes, they will answer in Bayabas.
Thus, giving the importance of tree has contributed much to our place. Thus easily
remembered by its name “BAYABAS”. IT IS THE DURING THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE LATE Teniente
de Barrio, Teodulo Lago way back 1950’s the barangay was named after the BAYABAS TREE.
