The repetition of words beginning with the same letter. To Alliteration
draw attention to a particular sound and/or movement, to
intensify or to bind words together.

Compares one thing to another; but says it is something


instead of like something. To allow people to create a clear Metaphor
picture in their heads.

Use of words which sound like the things they describe. To


further describe the scene by communicating to the reader Onomatopoeia
the sounds that were heard.

Comparing one thing to another using the words 'like' or


'as'. It allows us to build up a clear picture of the thing Simile
being described.
Rule of Three
A trio of words or phrases used for emphasis.

An over-exaggeration, to create emphasis. Hyperbole

Giving human qualities to things that are not human. Connects


us to that thing being describe. Personification
The choice of word can also affect the
reader – consider:
The man crept slowly down the corridor.
Inference – what could the man be doing in
that corridor?

The man marched quickly down the corridor.


Inference – what could the man be doing down
the corridor
