Biography

  • The dark side of the turn of the century’s post-punk revival, Interpol formed in New York City, USA during the summer of 1997. 12 years since their debut album, 2002’s “Turn On The Bright Lights” their atmospheric and energetic indie rock continues to be a critical and commercial success.

The band are currently made up of singer and guitarist Paul Banks, drummer Sam Fogarino and lead guitarist Daniel Kessler. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they are one of the few bands who came to prominence in the great indie rock boom of the early 2000’s to keep their creative spark alive into the new decade.

This is especially impressive considering that in 2010 the band's unofficial frontman, effortlessly suave bassist Carlos Dengler, left the band after growing tired of the touring lifestyle. Many thought that they would be rudderless ship after he left, but many were wrong.

Ever since they formed, the band had been an equal collaboration between every member. They’ve never had a main songwriter and still don’t have one to this day. With Dengler gone, a crucial element of that dynamic went with him but after a long break, they were able to return to their former glory with style.

They returned with 2014’s “El Pintor”, an album that went to the top ten on the album charts of both sides of the Atlantic and restored the bands mojo in thrilling fashion, with their icy, edgy post-punk never sounding more exciting and totally unique as it does now.

With experience and ability on their side, Interpol have quite simply never been a better band than they are today. They’re at their peak, and they’re only going to get better, so join the ride now, and you will not regret it!

Live reviews

  • Interpol

    El Pintor – Berlin 04.02.2015

Interpol. How does an avid Interpol fan write a review without sounding biased? It is not possible.

However, the least I can do is to share my experience of watching them with you.

You are reading from someone who has only Interpol posters in her bedroom, and who had flown over continents to catch them live.

The anticipation kept this little fan girl awake at night because she couldn’t handle the excitement. To hear all those songs that has defined music for her, to see Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler and Sam Fogarino in person once again. The beautiful memory of having drowned in their performance is something that cannot be etched, no matter how many brain injuries I have gone through.

This time, it was in Berlin, at Columbiahalle, a magical city and a white evening where the streets glistened with snow.

The wait was long, as expected, but when the opening band Health from California came on, I seriously thought I had entered the wrong concert hall. The loud decibels, head banging and heavy distortion were not something that I am averse to, but that certainly caught me offguard at an Interpol concert.

After listening in to a few songs, I had an idea of why the band chose them. Health had some postpunk melodies and effects in their sound, but amplified them with scremo, distortion and meddled with loads of overdrive. I would say this is the future of metal really, although I think Deftones did that way before.

A bad habit of mine, and probably of many, is to check out the set list before the concert. I was thrilled to know there was still some element of suspence, as Interpol has been varying some parts of their set list at every one of the Europe tour.

The thrill was transformed to bewilderment and elation, because the setlist did not fail me. This El Pintor tour for me, painted the best atmosphere and soundscape that I would have never imagined being in. Just imagine – Leif Erikson, Take You on a Cruise and Pioneer to the Falls. These are epic tracks that you can sink yourself into wholly. The other one that is totally befitting of being performed live is The Lighthouse. Listening to that on CD cannot be compared to hearing it live. Paul’s baritone and the gloomy backdrop of a storm, with Daniel’s riffs, will sail you slowly away into a realm you can never experience on the headphones.

The band did a fair bit of their tracks from the latest album, which I am not a huge fan of, but their decision to perform My Desire was a good one, since that was the best track for me. Surprisingly, the crowd seemed to be more enthusiastic about the new songs. This says a lot about the way the latest album has been marketed.

Interpol kept old timers like myself happy with PDA and Untitled. I have no strong feelings for The New, but I appreciate that they tried to revive it. However, Paul seemed rather out of touch with this one. The tempo was a little amiss, but the diehard fan in me will never blame them, will I?

The other song that sent me to the clouds was Not Even Jail. This is one song that will sound impeccable on a good set of headphones or live, but of course the latter wins.

Interpol ended their encore with Slow Hands, and the crowd went a little wild, and tried to mosh. Well, just a few lads, but it was amusing because this was an Interpol concert. No surprises seeing some really annoyed glances from girls.

I was rejuvenated with my experience of watching them again. Yes, the boys are getting on in years, and maybe even in skill, but it was an essential dosage for zealot like myself.

  • Live Interpol is an experience every fan should have. The music, the lights, Daniel Kessler's dancing, and the just whole atmosphere. There is a euphoric quality once the band starts up. Usually it begins with the first track from their latest album. The bass of the drum coincides with the beat of your body, the guitar will resuscitate your heartstrings, and once Paul's lips sing into the microphone you will swoon in tears of delight.

The band is not very talkative and they may interact with the crowd here and there. But, for them it is about the music and intricate orchestration of it all. You will not be displeased.

Sam's been known to throw out drumsticks to the crowd, as well as Daniel giving away some guitar picks. If you happen to be the kind of Interpol fan that not only wants the experience to hear the band live, they are really cool about meeting up with the fans after the show. Taking pictures with the fans, signing countless vinyl, posters, and memorabilia, as well as just pleasurable conversations amongst the fans.

Every time Interpol is in my surrounding area I make sure to buy a ticket and watch these men put on a phenomenal live performance. You'll never forget in your lifetime. I promise.

  • This was my third time seeing Interpol live. As with the past times, they didnt disappoint.

I've been a fan since the very beginning and Ive seen them evolve and change through the years. Now with the new record "El Pintor" and the exit of Carlos D of the band, we fans were a little worried about the direction of their music. The new record wasn't particularly my cup of tea, but it was a whole different experience seeing it live. It's almost as if it were a different record. The beat of the drums compares equally with the first and fan-loved albums, the sequence of old and new songs doesn't show a difference in time and band changes. I think seeing them live especially on smaller venues is an excellent opportunity to see their music on a different level. And the energy the boys put in the show has always been amazing.

I'm happy that I saw them again, I will see them in the future for sure.

  • Interpol were note perfect and Turn on the Bright Lights is one of the best albums in the last 50 years hands down but Alexandra Palace is simply a terrible venue for live music. It's not designed to be and it shows.

Because the floor is flat (unlike Brixton / Hammersmith Academy etc) you simply don't see anything unless you are 6'6". Therefore you don't really see the band and therefore can't really connect with them and what they are trying to do.. I wasn't the only one.. I saw scores of people who gave up and sat in the food area instead and heard a guy on the phone talking to his wife describing it as soulless and I couldn't agree more. I love the band and cannot blame them, they did nothing wrong but I will never go to another gig at Ally Pally again unless the ghost of Freddie Mercury rises for a one night only special there... Sorry Ally Pally but you are a rubbish music venue..

  • Disappointing ! This could have been a great concert by an excellent band in a beautiful venue - but unfortunately Interpol played a very short set, just 1 hr 10 minutes. Obviously the entirety of "Turn On The Bright Lights" was a given (since it was the 15th anniversary celebration of the album), but I expected several additional songs and they only played 3 titles as an encore. I have seen similar "celebration of album x" gigs by QOTSA, Jesus & Mary Chain and Peter Hook in the past and they all have been much, much more generous with their time (playing 6-10 songs on top of the celebrated album). Being a headlining band with 5 albums of material to choose from and playing less than 90 minutes is just scroogy, doesn't make the paying audience feel appreciated. Hell, their festival sets were longer than their headlining show - what's up with that !?!

  • I have been waiting to see this band for at least 10 years. I was so excited! My husband and I have been listening to them for years. We were skeptical of the setlist we found online, worried that we wouldn’t get to hear enough of their early songs, but we were very pleased! They played a really good mix of our favorite hits and some new songs that we and the crowd seemed to enjoy. We really enjoyed the show because they sounded great, awesome venue, great light show and ambiance, and the set list. They have such a unique sound. Overall, we were really happy and had a great time. My only complaint is the ridiculous fees that Ticketmaster and live nation charge! Otherwise the ticket price was more than reasonable. I would see them again for sure!

  • As usual, Interpol were amazing. I saw them at Electric Ballroom in London last summer and Copenhagen a few days before Roundhouse and I love the fact that this time they added a few songs from Our Love to Admire which is one of my favourite albums.

Only thing is that the sound wasn't great this time and the crowd was rowdy and disrespectful to such a stylish and civilized band - no mosh pit, please! Of course, you can't blame the band but it did affect the experience for me.

Extra praise to Daniel Kessler who played almost as well as he looked (this means he played spectacularly). Loved the suit, as always. Will definitely be there when they visit Denmark this summer.

  • I was in there few days ago in Köln, we were an 8 group of friends coming from Mallorca (Spain) just for that concert.

Our main feeling was that the show was too short, barely 1h15', I know that the band can't play everyone of their beautiful songs, but they forgot a lot of them.

Maybe the german public is too 'cold' and they decided to finish earlier, almost anybody were moving and feeling the band in a 'physical way'.

I guess the band is gonna play much more time in other cities of the tour.

But for us was a deception to travel to Köln just for that short concert.

I hope to feel their music and see again Interpol ASAP, but in a better show.

  • this concert was a great moment, one that you'll always remember, as Interpol is precious; Their musique is EXACTLY what I love, and why rock'n'roll music is so crucial for me. The show was as usual too short with them , 1H30 , this is just a preview ! but such a great one, with many good songs, not necessarily the easiest but exactly why Interpol has a real great place.

those who said that the departure of Carlos D would kill the group were wrong; the new bass is very good, and their last album is a classical for me. I really enjoyed this concert and look forward to seeing them again soon ( may be rock en seine, please !)

  • A fantastic performance from Interpol. I had seen them in Sydney in 2010 and was really looking forward to seeing them again. A great repertoire and a small venue, so close to them

    HOWEVER!!

The sound system was horrendous. They should fire their sound engineer. It was sometimes even impossible to recognize the sound, extremely saturated and distorted, even Paul's voice wasn't recogniseable!!

What a pity the sound engineer ruined the concert.

Still enjoyed so much and will return to see them again!

PS, I did miss Carlos D. on the stage, he is a brilliant bassist.
