Amazon’s sales are almost as famous as the retail giant’s famously low prices.

The online giant throws a couple of big discount events around the year - the spring sale, autumn discounts and, of course, Black Friday in November.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Originally held as a one-day event way back in 2015, Amazon has since extended the sale to span an entire 48 hours. This is known as Amazon Prime Day but in March, we were treated to the Spring Sale and in October, it is known as the Prime Big Deal Days.

The sales, which discounts everything from Amazon’s own tech to home appliances, mattresses, TVs, beauty and more, are held exclusively for Amazon’s Prime members, hence the name.

You must have a subscription to take advantage of all the deals on offer, but don’t worry if you haven’t gotten around to it yet - we’ve got a way to get Prime membership for free.

When is Amazon Prime Big Deal Days in 2024?

This year the event will take place on October 8 and 9.

How to take part in Amazon Prime Big Deal Days

As mentioned, Prime membership is the deal-breaker to joining in the Amazon Prime Big Deal Days

If you ask us, Prime membership is well worth the £8.99 monthly fee (or £95 a year if you’d rather pay annually). There’s express delivery, freebies on Deliveroo, access to great movies, TV and music, plus gaming, books, magazines and so much more - all for the equivalent of 29p a day.

Students get a sweeter deal at £4.49 per month or £47.49 per year, so if you live with one, get them to sign up and enjoy cheaper membership across the household.

Not sure about the cost? Understandable, given the current financial climate. That’s why we’ve written this guide showing how to get Prime membership for free. Sign up before Amazon Prime Day and membership still counts, even if you’re on the free trial.

What kind of deals can you expect?

At this point, it would be easier to list what isn’t on offer. Amazon has been rolling back the RRPs across everything from garden equipment, home entertainment, large white goods, mattresses, luxury fragrances, booze, and heaps more. Alongside sale-long discounts, there are Deals of the Day and Flash Sales, during which sensationally low prices are only offered for a limited period.

Some of the best deals are on Amazon’s line of in-house tech. We’re talking about Kindles, Fires, Ring doorbells and Echos, all with new reduced price tags that make adding to basket a no-brainer.

Are there any deals now?

This is Amazon we’re talking about, where there’s always a discount to be found. We’ve rounded up some of the best to shop now while we wait for Amazon’s biggest sale of the year to kick off.

Ninja 3-in-1 Food Processor & Blender

Amazon

While few of us have our very own sous chef on hand to make life easier in the kitchen, this sturdy dream machine is the next best option. Unlike any other food processor we tested, it takes the guesswork out of cooking for top-notch results every time. Add an accessory and Ninja’s Auto-IQ technology will calculate exactly what program you will need and how long it should run for. It’s easy to override this and use the controls manually instead, but we found the automatic settings worked brilliantly for everything from cake mixes to chopped vegetables.

Everything you need is inside the box including a dough blade and reversible slicing/grating disc though beware, this is brutally sharp. Removable parts are all dishwasher safe for easy cleaning too. The machine also comes with a 2.1 litre blender jug and an additional 700ml single serve cup which is great for whizzing up individual drinks on the go.

Our only complaint? The powerful 1200W motor is seriously noisy so might not be the best choice in an open-plan kitchen or small flat unless you’re actively trying to annoy your neighbours.

Google Pixel 8

Google

Compared with the Pixel 8 Pro, you are getting a smaller screen and one less camera with just two versus the Pro’s triple system. Visually the two phones are very similiar with their metal trims but in feel, they are different once again with a polished glass versus the Pro’s matte finish. Refresh rates and brightness are unsurprisingly more advanced on the Pro, but there is the same 50MP main camera.

There are a lot of features to love about the Google Pixel 8, however, such as its adaptive battery that provides juice for over 24 hours and camera editing functions like Magic Eraser to automatically remove photo bombers in pictures or disruptive noises in videos as wel as Best Take so the whole group is happy with the final shot.

Bissell Spotclean Pro

Bissell

Best for: tackling small areas and spot stains

Weighing in at 6kg (just over 13lbs for us Luddites), this powerhouse of a carpet cleaner comes on with 750W of va-va-voom, meaning it behaves like a much bigger machine, but is still light enough to be easily hoiked around the house by the averagely fit person.

The 1.5m (almost 5ft – Luddites, I’m talking to you again) long attached hose with cleaning head means that, as well as carpets, you can spot-clean spills or use it on stairs, upholstery, inside cars and get into tight corners. Its scrubbing action works hard on stains old and new, and it can be used on soft and hard surfaces.

Bonus: it comes with a three-year warranty and a sample bottle of cleaning fluid so you can get going straight away.
