Oscar (1967)
French comedy film. It's about an industrialist who discovers over the course of a single day that his daughter is pregnant, he has been robbed by an employee, and various other calamities have befallen his household and his business. While it's not my favourite Louis de Funès movie it's very good and considering it's a Louis de Funès movie you know what you're in for. For some reason I didn't watch this before I watched the American remake Oscar (1991) with Sylvester Stallone last year, but I enjoyed that one (mainly for the reason that it was a gangster movie set in the 30s and I enjoy gangster movies from the 30s a lot) and I think it's even better set in 60s France. Overall I can recommend it.

Anora (2024)
American comedy-drama film. It's about a sex worker from Brooklyn who meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch but once the news reaches Russia, his parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled. While it is definitely very steamy at times I'm actually surprised at just how good this movie is. The first act feels like it's one big party; lots of loud music, drugs and sex. Up until they marry and then the guy's parents find out. But I don't want to spend too much time talking about plot details and instead just want to tell you to watch this movie. It is really good and I can very much recommend it.

one of the best movies not only in Mexico but in Latin America

Die Hard (for the first time! somehow...) - incredible how such an action-focused movie has depth, quiet time, subtle and not so subtle foreshadowing compared to the in your face action movies that are more common now. No wonder it's a classic.
Jurassic Park 2, because I love the series and it's a good watch ^^

Nosferatu (2024): As a huge fan of both the 1922 original and the 1979 remake along with Shadow of the Vampire(2000) I was cautiously optimistic because it was helmed by Dave Eggers whose horror films (The VVitch and Lighthouse) have been fantastic. I am pleased to report that this latest version was a delicacy that paid homage to the original, even including shot-for-shot remakes of famous scenes. I recommend seeing it in the theatre.

The War of the Rohirrim
desperately holding into whatever it can to pass as a Lord of the rings movie. It ain't bad, though you would think it deserved more polish.
The realistic backgrounds clash with the anime characters. And in general the animation and direction are a roller coaster in terms of quality.
If this was related to Heavenly Sword it would be almost the same movie.

Zemeckis best movie since Castaway. This one feels special and was damn close to a classic had it not been for some underdeveloped side stories. The passage of time can be contextualized by events and very little story, as was the case with "modern times" and don't get me started at the cretaceous period...what a dumbass timelapse
7.5/10
Hallowed Ground
It was a movie alright. A very low budget scarecrow horror that i only watched because i like weird, rundown and isolated towns in the USA

Doom: Annihilation (2019)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8328716/reference/
Supposedly the lead is performed by actress Amy Manson, but the show is stolen everytime Dominic Mafham is on screen. One of those actors you never see in larger movies or outside a list of neverending TV series. Face was familiar, he has done quite a lot of different things, including the voice of Reg in the game South of the Circle. I can't locate him in any movie I've seen, so I must have seen him in any episode of whatever series. Let's face it, this is a very B series movie, bad as a movie, bad as a Doom movie, but I didn't expect the lead to be that bad. The other two female marines put better performances than the lead, and I would have swapped them for Amy in the middle of the movie. She shows little to me as an actress, and the only good thing I can tell about her is that she doesn't blink when shooting. Actually, you rarely see her blinking. She's like anti-Ripley, when she should have at least tried to go that way. Not showing many emotions except "I'm super concentrated" and "I just killed 3 bad guys while thinking in My Little Pony" and some spare ones like anger or fear here and there, but not much, really.
So the movie. Secret UAC lab in Phobos, testing portals for teleportation between Phobos and Earth, what could go wrong with Dominic Mafham as chief doctor? Ok it goes wrong ofc, this is Doom. There are some references to the games (one of the corpses has a John Carmack ID, red blue and yellow keycards, once a marine is forced to use a chainsaw, ofc a BFG9000...) but it takes long to look or feel as a Doom movie. In fact, the first third or so of the movie, the bad guys are the station workers, "infected" with the evil that came out from the portal. It really feels like a zombie movie. I was really waiting for someone to be injured or bitten by a bad guy and transform into one of them. Things start to go very wrong due to the supernatural force going awry with systems, AI, booze runs out, suddenly aliens appear... And for most of the rest of the movie, there's only one alien type. Still little to make it look or feel as a Doom movie. Btw, the aliens are blue and capable of doing kame-hame balls of fire (with almost the same movements). Sometimes they're being under two marines' automatic fire as if nothing, killing the attackers, other times they die with a few bullets. Remaining people die, truth is revealed, and there's a short pre-ending scene just before the climax, but somewhat the only memorable part of the movie with some decent design but faulty execution.
Flat characters mainly, predictable stuff, too much plastic, not too bad CGI, aliens makeup and overall design quite unoriginal... What's sad is that there was material for a decent movie, but apparently if you have a budget of less than X, no one gives a damn about finding new talents, polishing the script, or even make some of the decorations original within the same budget. Hell, if multimillion blockbusters don't do it, why should we for a hundredth of the money.... The worst (besides Amy aka Joan Dark)? The BFG9000 looks totally as plastic, the way it's handled is totally idiotic, looks and feels cheap in every way, except in the green plasma balls and vapour that appears after triggered. There are a few actors and characters that aren't that bad, but there are too many things shadowing for them to shine.
I watched it out of curiosity, knowing it had bad reviews and ratings. Deserved reviews and ratings. Only slightly recommended for die-hard Doom fans, bad movie hobbyists, and curious people like me.

The Apprentice (2024)
Canadian-Danish-Irish-American biographical docudrama film. It's about Donald Trump's career as a real estate businessman in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as his relationship with attorney Roy Cohn. First of all, this is neither very anti-Trump nor very pro-Trump. It's much more nuanced and complicated than that. Above all, this is just a very good movie. Great performances, especially by Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan, but Maria Bakalova was also very good. I think the main thing it has going for it is the great acting. I'm also glad this movie was even released, given that Donald Trump actually tried to block its release. Overall I'm surprised myself but I thought this was very good and I can recommend it. I know most MAGA republicans would probably go furious over some of the things shown in this movie, but I think I'd even recommend it to them.

Most definitely my favorite of the 2024 movies I've seen so far. First and foremost the script is exceptional. The narrative is so well crafted, it's a joy to watch it unfold. And all the characters are carefully portrayed, which is something that often goes forgotten in movies with a strong story and many overarching themes. Of course it helps that the superb cast is turning in top notch performances. Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Lucian Msamati are all brilliant.
Whether you're interested in the inner workings of the Church or not (I sure am not), I recommend the movie as it is more about power vs. heart than it is about Catholicism or the Church, and it's a thriller more than a liturgical drama.

Dampyr (2022)
Italian fantasy horror film. It's about a guy who, unbeknownst to himself, is half-human and half-vampire, and has to fight real vampires. Apparently this is based on an Italian comic book series also called Dampyr and it's the first installment of the Bonelli Cinematic Universe, Italy's answer to Marvel. So, is it any good? This dhampir (yes, that's the actual word for human-vampire hybrids) stuff has been done before, and done better. But this is good for what it is. Nothing more, but it's entertaining. And it's in English, despite being an Italian movie, so if that would've been a drawback for you, don't worry. Overall this was a good popcorn movie, but that's it. Still, can recommend.

I had to keep myself awake the other night because my grandpa was sick so I watched Red One and Dragon Ball Z Fusion Reborn on my phone, literally some random recommendations from the Prime Video app.
About Red One is the most corporate mainstream-y crowd-pleaser movie I've watched in a while, but I must admit that it was pretty entertaining which was what I wanted out of it.
And Fusion Reborn is one of the DBZ movies I missed back in the day because I'm pretty sure it was one of the VHS only releases in my country, and I really wasn't expecting a Dragon Ball movie to be borderline surrealistic, like it almost feels like they just told the animators to go wild in some scenes with the number of abstract objects and bizarre physics defying stuff that the one-off villain of turn can pull out of its ass. I also imagine it would be completely incoherent to anyone who isn't already familiar with the franchise as stuff just happens and characters just show up with no introduction, even the artstyle changes at some points with no explanation given. That said, I really vibed with how it looks even if the story is just a constant "well, that happened". Not quite as pure eye-candy as DB: Path to Power or DBS: Broly tho.

Wander to Wonder (2023)
Dutch-French-Belgian-British animated comedy drama short film. It's about some miniature characters from an old children’s television show who are left to their own devices when their creator dies. It's mixed media, the tv show creator is played by a real actor and the miniature characters are beautifully stop-motion animated. But at 14 minutes this is way to short. Deserves a whole feature length movie or a tv show. Overall I can very much recommend it.

A Real Pain (2024)
American-Polish buddy comedy-drama film. It's about two mismatched Jewish American cousins who travel to Poland in an attempt to honor their late grandmother. Jesse Eisenberg wrote and directed this and starred in it alongside Kieran Culkin. And they play very well off each other. Jesse Eisenberg is basically playing Jesse Eisenberg in this (like he so often does) and given that he comes from a Jewish family and has Polish ancestors this might actually be a self-insert. His character is reserved and anxious but he has a wife and kids to go home to. Kieran Culkin's character is very outgoing and free-spirited but he's alone. The dichotomy is very well portrayed here. Overall I like this. It's good. Can recommend.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
Kinda feels like a rather lame attempt to recycle the Rohan parts of Two Towers and Return of the King into a disjointed script with poor animation.
I can't say I was disappointed because I wasn't expecting much and I guess that's just what I got: not much.

La grande bouffe (1973)
Not recommended. This movie was one of the most disturbing garbage i've ever seen. Not because its poorly made or terribly acted, etc. The whole point of the movie was to emphasize vulgarity and disgust. It accomplished that. This film is better restricted to film students who would study this. This review is soo bang on. It made me realise a lot of things I had subconsciously noticed about the movie. Reviews like these that fill in mental gaps post watching something makes reading reviews or critiques worth it. Even though i fast forwarded a lot of this movie, my eyes need bleach! loads of it!! 😣 maybe even my mind does as well. Reminds me of the trauma of watching Caligula years ago 🤮.

Heh it's one of those movies whose value kinda disappeared as anything but a museum piece once the term "avant-garde" fell out of use.
I get that it's all metaphorical and a satire of bourgeois boredom but I think it's one of those stories that might have been more efficient on the page that on the screen.

Origami (2024)
Japanese animated short film. It's about a piece of paper transforming other pieces of paper into plants and animals. There's no story to this, the animation's good but that's all there is to this. It's basically just a 3 minute tech demo. I've watched this because it's on the Oscars shortlist for Best Animated Short, but I doubt it's even gonna be nominated. Overall, I can't really recommend this.

Taste Of Cherry.
A bit too dull and minimalistic for my liking, though it eventually got more interesting and engrossing. The generic vagueness and out-of-nowhere completely cop out meta ending though makes it really hard to not give a kneejerk hate reaction that's it's overrated trash and not the "life-affirming arthouse classic" it's seen as. The biggest thing it got going for it is the formal quality, there's very little to hold onto in the characters and dialogue.

Vera Cruz 1954
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047647/
From ones of the reviews as im not a english speaker and dont want your eyes bleed:
Vera Cruz" is settled in Mexico during Austrian emperor Maximilian's ruling and the Juaristas revolution. Ban Trane (Gary Cooper) and Joe Erin (Burt Lancaster) cross the border to hire their guns for the cause that pays better. Trane is a former southern officer ruined by the American civil war and Erin is a self made top gun. Somehow the two men get to like and respect each other and they are paid by the emperor to take a mysterious French countess through Juarista country to the Port of Vera Cruz.
Mexico's colorful outdoor locations are very well used by director Robert Aldrich to give the film some sort of greatness, unusual in early 50's westerns. Lots of action and well done battle sequences help the movie too. The final gun duel couldn't be spared and it is a good one too.
The supporting cast is also outstanding. You'll find future stars in early roles such as Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson, along with Jack Elam all of them members of Erin's gang (what else?). But classical actors of the 40's and 50's are there too: Cesar Romero, George Macready (Maximilian)
Now a word from me. I like Bronson so i was surprised to see him here because he wasnt listed in cast at the beginning. He is listed as Charles Buchinsky, his real name for the last time. The movie was an inspiration for spaghetti westerns, and some even say that it was the first of those. Lots of double crossing, game of thrones style.
worth a watch for westerns and actions fans, theres plenty for both

The Six Triple Eight (2024)
American war drama film. Watched this yesterday. It's about the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black and all-female battalion in World War II. The story itself is absolutely amazing, I mean these women managed to get through 17 million pieces of mail in just 90 days, all while facing racism and misogyny. The movie and the script, sadly, feel kinda sanitized. It is an important story that needed to be told, but it deserved to be told better. I liked that we got to see some of the actual women who were portrayed in this at the end of the movie. It's always a nice touch with movies like this, bridging the gap between what we've just watched and the fact that these were actual, real people and sometimes still are. So overall I think it's a good movie for teaching people about the 6888 and their story but it should really be considered more of an inspiration to learn more about them. I certainly would've preferred a documentary about them instead. Still, it's good, so I can recommend it.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
