DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza City (AP) — For Gaza’s women, the hardships of life in the territory’s sprawling tent camps are compounded by the daily humiliation of never having privacy.

Women struggle to dress modestly while crowded into tents with extended family members, including men, and with strangers only steps away in neighboring tents. Access to menstrual products is limited, so they cut up sheets or old clothes to use as pads. Makeshift toilets usually consist of only a hole in the sand surrounded by sheets dangling from a line, and these must be shared with dozens of other people.

Americans see the federal government as rife with corruption, inefficiency and red tape — but they’re less sure about whether Elon Musk is the right person to fix it. An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll shows only about 3 in 10 U.S. adults strongly or somewhat approve of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk leads. The poll shows Americans aren’t broadly worried about a government filled with “deep state” actors poised to undermine Trump’s Republican agenda. They're also ambivalent about some of the changes Trump has mentioned, including eliminating large numbers of federal jobs and moving federal agencies outside Washington.

Republicans are eager to find replacements for former GOP Reps. Matt Gaetz and Michael Waltz in Tuesday’s special congressional primaries in Florida to add some breathing room to their slender majority in the U.S. House, but control of the chamber isn’t on the line. President Donald Trump looms large in the race. The Republican president has endorsed candidates in both GOP primaries and easily carried both districts in the November election. The winners will advance to special elections on April 1. Trump has backed state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis in Gaetz’s former 1st Congressional District. In Waltz’s 6th Congressional District, Trump endorsed state Rep. Randy Fine.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner has overcome some third-set cramping to beat Ben Shelton 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2 to return to the Australian Open final as he pursues a third Grand Slam title. The No. 1-ranked Sinner, a 23-year-old from Italy, fell behind in the opening set and twice was a point from losing it when Shelton served at 6-5. But Sinner broke there, then dominated the ensuing tiebreaker, and broke again to begin the second set. The only trouble Sinner ran into the rest of the way was when he clutched at his left hamstring, and then his right thigh, in the third set. Sinner plays No. 2 Alexander Zverev on Sunday for the championship.

The Kremlin says a settlement in Ukraine can't be facilitated by a drop in global oil prices as U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested. Addressing the annual World Economic Forum on Thursday, Trump said that the OPEC+ alliance of oil exporting countries shares responsibility for the nearly three-year conflict in Ukraine because it has kept oil prices too high. Trump said that “if the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.” Energy sales form a large part of Russia’s earnings. Asked about Trump’s comments, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov argued that the Ukrainian conflict had been triggered by the West's refusal to take into account Russian security interests. Peskov said the conflict doesn't depend on oil prices.

The deal will allow Atlaoui to return home on Feb. 4.

Hungary wants the European Union to intervene in a gas dispute it has with Ukraine, a potential sign of friction in the bloc’s upcoming discussions over renewing sanctions against Russia. Speaking on state radio on Friday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Ukraine’s decision to cease transiting Russian gas into Central Europe through the Brotherhood pipeline had forced Hungary to turn to alternative routes, raising energy prices. EU sanctions on Russia for its war had also cost the country, he said, adding he wanted the bloc to convince Kyiv to resume gas transits if it expects Hungary to support the renewal of sanctions against Moscow which must be approved by Jan. 31. Orbán has frequently threatened to veto EU sanctions against Russia.

More than 100 baby tortoises, most of them dead, have been returned to Tanzania from Thailand as evidence in a case against a wildlife smuggling network. The international police organization Interpol said Friday that the 116 tortoises were discovered hidden in the luggage of a Ukrainian woman at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport more than two years ago. Of the total, 98 have since died, but all were handed over Thursday for use in criminal proceedings. They included endangered or vulnerable species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The arrest of the suspected smuggler helped police map a larger wildlife trafficking network, resulting in the arrests of 14 additional suspects.

A bold new vision for the Champions League was launched this season. It has involved more games and more money for European soccer’s elite in a rebuttal to the threat of a controversial breakaway super league. The new-look format was intended to be about more than just further enriching the sport’s wealthiest clubs. It was intended to deliver more drama, more competition and more entertainment to fans than in its previous guise, which was widely deemed to have become stale as the same teams routinely advanced beyond the old group stage. The introduction of a 36-team league phase of the competition has provided shock results and left some of Europe’s giants in danger of early elimination.

A warning has gone out to seafarers in the Persian Gulf over what appear to be attempts by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to compel ships to enter Iranian waters. While Iran has a history of harassing and impounding vessels, it hasn’t directly launched many such attacks recently. Instead, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been attacking ships since November 2023, a campaign that now appears to be winding down after the ceasefire in Gaza. Meanwhile, Palestinians displaced from the war-battered north are facing an agonizing wait before the days-old ceasefire allows them to see what remains of their homes.

The lifetime ban on former South Korean international Son Jun-ho, imposed in China last year after charges of match-fixing, has not been extended to the rest of the world. The Korea Football Association announced the news Friday. FIFA informed the KFA that it had rejected the Chinese Football Association’s request that its punishment be universally applied. “With this, the ban on Son is only applicable in China,” the KFA said. “The path is now open for Son to sign with a team in South Korea’s K League or anywhere in the world other than China.” Son, 2020 K League MVP, was accused of match-fixing by Chinese authorities while playing for four-time champion Shandong Taishan in May 2023. He denied the charges.
