William J. Laimbeer Jr., popularly called Bill Laimbeer, is a well-known personality in the basketball world. He is a retired basketball player and has been a professional basketball coach since 2002.
Background & Education
The basketball star was born in Boston, USA. However, he was raised in Palos Verdes Estates, California, and the Chicago neighborhoods of Clarendon Hills.
He is an old student at the University of Notre Dame and Palos Verdes High School.
NBA Career
Laimbeer played for the following teams in his career: Basket Brescia (1979–1980), Cleveland Cavaliers (1980–1982), and Detroit Pistons (1982–1993).
His eleven-year stay with the Detroit Pistons, during the time they were called “Bad Boys,” remains in the hearts of many basketball fans. Laimbeer’s notorious game style, poor sportsmanship, and challenging physical plays and fouls against opposing teams raised his reputation as a “pure piston bad boy.” He won the 1989 and 1990 NBA Championships with the Pistons and was a four-time NBA All-Star.
Coaching Career
Between 2002 and 2009, he coached the Detroit Shock of the WNBA. In this period, he led the team to win the 2008, 2006, and 2003 WNBA Championships.
He also coached New York Liberty between 2013 and 2017 and the Las Vegas Aces between 2018 and 2021. In 2003 and 2015, he was honored as the “WNBA Coach of the Year.”
