About Melchora Aquino
Filipino-born Melchora Aquino de Ramos was known for her role during the Philippine Revolution. She went by many aliases and epithets, including “Tandang Sora” and “Woman of Revolution”, for her contributions in the revolution. Aquino was also a gifted singer and performed at local events.
Family
She was born to farmers, Juan and Valentino Aquino. She married Fulgencio Ramos and they had six children.
Career
Tandang Sora had a store from which she helped the sick and injured revolutionaries. She fed them and gave them medical attention. She also held secret meetings of the Katipuneros at her house.
She was arrested by the law enforcement agency in Spain guardia civil on August 29, 1896 when the Spaniards knew that Aquino had been involved in the revolution and knew the whereabouts of the Katipuneros. He was kept in captivity at the house of a cabeza de barangay of Pasong Putik, Novaliches and was later relocated to Bilibid Prison in Manila. During her stay at the prison, she refused to disclose any information despite several interrogations.
On September 2, she was expelled to Guam by Governor General Ramón Blanco and was put under house arrest together with Segunda Puentes in Don Justo Dungca’s home.
Tandang Sora returned to the Philippines five years after the United States completely seized the Philippines in 1898.
