Nicknamed Momo, Sam Giancana was a major American mobster and the "Chicago Outfit" general boss between 1957 and 1966. He was known as a ruthless criminal with close ties to the CIA and show business celebrities.
Personal Life
Giancana is of Italian origin. He married Angeline DeTolve in September 1993. However, DeTolve sadly died in April 1954, leaving Giancana to raise their three daughters alone.
Criminal Life
He joined the 42 Gang as a teen. His reputation as a high-level criminal grew and was noticed by the leaders of the Chicago Outfit. Between 1940 and 1950, he was the mastermind behind illegal drug and liquor distributions, illegal gambling, and political racketeering in Louisiana. In 1957, he was promoted to be the boss of the entire Chicago Outfit.
According to several reports, Giancana and his Mafia helped John F. Kennedy smoothly win the U.S. presidential elections of 1960.
He was arrested severally and sentenced to one-year imprisonment for contempt of the court.
Death
Giancana was shot seven times in his head by a gunman on June 19, 1975. He died on the same day, at age 68.
Trivia
The CIA recruited Giancana in the 1960s and strategized a plot to capture or kill Cuban President Fidel Castro.
