About Thomas Sydenham
The discovery of Sydenham's chorea, also known as St Vitus' Dance, was made by the renowned Thomas Sydenham. The English physician was also a key figure in clinical medicine and epidemiology. He spent the bulk of his career emphasizing the importance of accurate record keeping.
Growing Up
Sydenham lived out his early life in London, graduated from the All Souls College in 1948, and became a Pembroke College graduate in 1676.
Career
Sydenham rose to fame as the father of English medicine after discovering a treatment of confluent smallpox and hysteria in a publication he wrote in 1682 called "Methodus curandi febres." He also published other books such as "Observationes Medicae" in 1676 and "Epistolae responsoriae" in 1680. Sydenham is credited with coining the term Nosology, which involved taking the disease as it presented itself instead of assuming a complete diagnosis since it could lead to errors.
