Most people consider being lonely a feeling that will eventually go away. There are mental health disorders that a person can have like self-harm, depression, anxiety, other disorders as well. No one would even consider being lonely as something that can lead to many other mental health disorders.

Health Risks Associated With Loneliness
Depression and suicide
Cardiovascular disease and stroke
Increased stress levels
Decreased memory and learning
Antisocial behavior
Poor decision-making
Alcoholism and drug abuse
The progression of Alzheimer's disease
Altered brain function

Most people in today's society to not realize that it is okay to be alone and to be comfortable with yourself. It is alright to not have 50 snap chats or a hundred messages waiting for you when you wake up each day. It's only going to fill that void in your heart on a temporary basis but eventually, you will be left all alone with just your thoughts and where will that leave you?

Sad? Depressed? Scared? Feeling insecure? A number of feelings that could occur and you won't always know the best way to handle those feelings. To change the outcomes so you feel better. All you can do is prepare yourself, for that feeling and then choose whether you're going to just sulk or thrive.

Personally, I would rather thrive in this situation and learn how to be my own person then choosing to stay comfortable with the superficial aspects of life. It's important to find that common denominator with your values and beliefs. To find what's important to you, and activities that you enjoy doing.

Go laugh with your girlfriends, have a smashing time at the concert you've always wanted too, and enjoy the scenery of this beautiful planet that we live on. However, if you end up going to a restaurant by yourself that is okay, going shopping and just walking around is okay as well. You will be alright. You will survive.

Survival is key, being able to stand up for yourself and doing what you like where no one else's opinion matters. It is the ability to be able to be your own person in your own time that will help you thrive in life. Saying that being alone is scary and it can really mess with a person's head but that is why you have to try twice as hard in order to get past it.

So choose to thrive, when facing the fear of being lonely just think to yourself that you are able to overcome it. Use the people around you to build you up and take every opportunity that comes your way. God has a plan, and there is always someone out there for you. Don't give up on yourself because you feel alone. Use that feeling to be more motivated to get what you want in life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
