New Year's Eve Expectations Vs. Realities As Told By Charlie Brown

Christmas is over, so it’s time for the next holiday! New Year’s Eve is approaching, and sometimes we seem to have a false sense of expectation on how this holiday will turn out. We expect a fun time with a possible bit of romance at midnight, but reality soon hits and shows New Years isn’t as great as it’s cracked up to be. One person who can definitely see the negatives in New Years is good ol’ Charlie Brown. Here are some New Year’s Eve expectations and reality as told be the blockhead himself:

1. Making Plans

Expectation:

“So, you were serious when you mentioned having a New Year’s party back in July, right? Because I’ve planned my entire schedule around it, and even managed to book that DJ we wanted!”

Reality:

“What if I just stay at home this year? Just order a pizza, and binge watch Friends until the ball drops. Maybe I’ll go to bed before midnight. Maybe I won’t even wear pants. I’m feeling pretty crazy this year.”

2. Getting Ready

Expectation:

"Okay, so the party starts in six hours! Time to get ready. I have to shower, do my makeup, pick an outfit, do my hair…"

Reality:

“The party starts in 5 minutes. Guess I should start getting ready.”

3. Your Evening Outfit

Expectation:

“This outfit is perfect! And my hair looks great! I can’t believe I got my eyeliner to wing out so flawlessly. Wow, my shoes go so much better with this outfit than I thought!”

Reality:

“I wore this shirt yesterday, but I guess it’ll do.”

4. The Party

Expectation:

“This is going to be the biggest party of the season! The music is blasting, and the house is packed! And there’s so much to do!”

Reality:

“Oh, only you, Joe, and his girlfriend showed up? Maybe we can watch a movie or play Monopoly while we wait for midnight...”

5. Mingling

Expectation:

“Susie! How have you been? I haven’t seen you in months! Oh my gosh, and is that Mike? You have a beard now! Hey, where’s Joe? I want to ask how his job interview went! And…”

Reality:

“So…who are you kissing at midnight?”

6. Dancing

Expectation:

"I love this song! Come dance with me!"

Reality:

"Time for another drink."

7. The Ball Drop

Expectation:

“Guys! The ball’s dropping! 10!, 9!, 8!…”

Reality

“Ugh. Can I go home yet?”

8. The Midnight Kiss

Expectation:

You turn to the person you’ve been flirting with and eyeing up all night. You both lock eyes, and lean in toward each other. You share an innocent, yet sweet kiss that you can’t wait to tell your friends about tomorrow!

Reality:

“You’re in a relationship, but can I kiss you? It’ll just be on the cheek.” (Did someone say friend zone? Ugh.)

9. The Rest of the Night

Expectation:

“The night is young! I’m ready to party until the sun comes up!”

Reality:

“Time to go to bed and question everything that happened tonight.”

10. New Year's Day

Expectation:

"Hey, we have all this food leftover. Let's invite some people over and have a second party!"

Reality:

ZZZzzzzzzZZZzzzZZzzZzzzzzZzzzzz....

11. The Rest of the Year

Expectation:

*Sigh* "365 days until next year..."

Reality:

*Sigh* "365 days of this new year..."

New Year’s Eve isn’t always fun, but try and have a good time. Put yourself out there and make plans with friends. It doesn’t have to be a huge party, but surrounding yourself with the right people can make for a great night. Have a happy and safe New Year’s Eve, and here’s to 2016!

3. You get a chance to eat "kid foods" again.

2. When “I’m going to do my very best to make sure I know all your names” is said, it may or may be an empty promise

3. “Wow! That sounds so cool! Where is your family from?”

4. You dread when people ask you to repeat your name over and over because it “sounds so cool when you say it”

5. There’s a 50/50 chance that your name will come back either correct or incorrect at Starbucks

6. People try to find shorter, easier nicknames for you instead of calling you by your actual name

7. When someone famous or fictional character shares your name, you get so happy

8. “What’s your name?” “It’s [name]” “I’m sorry, what was it again?”

9. You’ve pretty much seen every misspelling and heard every mispronunciation of your name throughout your life

10. When you find another person with an “ethnic” sounding name, you both get excited

11. Despite the struggles, your name is pretty unique… just like you

Can I be excused for the rest of my life?

Don't Be That Person

1. “Oh, so you/your family are immigrants!”

2. “Is Puerto Rico near Mexico?”

3. “Do you speak Puerto Rican?”

4. “You look too light/dark to be Puerto Rican.”

5. “Do I need my passport to go to Puerto Rico?”

6. “Geez, you are obsessed with your flag. We get it, you’re Puerto Rican.”

7. “Why are you so loud?”

8. “So does your family know English?”

9. “Oh my god, Puerto Ricans are so spicy.”

10. “So did you eat a lot of tacos?”

11. “Are you Mexican?”

Love hard, every day, and never be ashamed.
