From the tragic Pune Porsche crash to the Worli hit-and-run case, India witnessed several shocking hit-and-run incidents in 2024. These cases ranged from high-speed luxury car accidents to reckless driving involving pedestrians and motorcyclists.

The year witnessed a significant rise in hit-and-run cases across India’s metro cities, where individuals involved in accidents flee the scene without assisting victims or reporting the incident. This has become increasingly common in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
Here are a few cases of hit-and-run cases in 2024:
1. Pune Porshe Crash
Past midnight, IT professionals Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta were returning home on a bike after a night outing when tragedy struck. A speeding Porsche, allegedly driven by a 17-year-old under the influence of alcohol, crashed into them, killing both on the spot. What initially appeared to be a fatal accident quickly escalated into nationwide outrage over allegations of preferential treatment and judicial leniency.Within 24 hours of his arrest, the Juvenile Justice Board granted the minor bail under controversial conditions: working with the Yerwada police for 15 days, writing a 300-word essay on road safety, undergoing treatment for alcohol use, and attending counselling sessions. Public criticism mounted over the perceived leniency given the severity of the incident.
2. Delhi's Ashram Hit-And-Run Case
A hit-and-run incident on August 17 near Ashram in New Delhi claimed the life of a 34-year-old cyclist after being struck by a Mercedes car. The police later arrested the driver involved. According to the victim's family, the car allegedly hit the cycle from behind, dragging it several metres on the road. The Delhi Police reported that the driver, Pradeep Gautam, fled the scene after hitting cyclist Rajesh.3. Ghazipur Hit-And-Run Case
A 40-year-old advocate, Mithlesh Chaube, died in a hit-and-run accident in East Delhi's Ghazipur area on September 25 at 1:30 am. He was practising at Karkardooma court and was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle immediately fled the scene.According to Delhi Police, the incident occurred late in the evening, and Chaube succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Police registered a case of a fatal accident.
4. Palghar Hit-And-Run Case
A 29-year-old man died in a hit-and-run incident in Manor, Palghar, (approximately 94 kms away from Mumbai) when a high-speed Scorpio car struck a bike rider on August 9. The accident happened around 1 am, and the injured bike rider, identified as Sagar Gajanan Patil, later succumbed to his injuries.The driver of the Scorpio fled the scene after the accident, abandoning the car a short distance away. Police recovered the Scorpio, which was reportedly carrying three people, including the driver. All three occupants of the Scorpio have been detained, but no alcohol was found in their system. According to officials, section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, was applied in this case.
5. Thane Hit-And-Run Case
A 21-year-old biker, identified as Darshan Shashidhar Hegde, died after being hit by a speeding car at Nitin Junction in Thane. Following the accident, the accused car driver fled the scene. A case was registered at the Naupada Police Station against an unknown person under Section 106(2), Section 281, and Section 125(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.6. Bengaluru Airport Hit-And-Run Case
Three BSC students, identified as Rohit, Suchit, and Harsha, died in a serious and brutal hit-and-run road accident Bengaluru Airport Road, according to police. The trio had gone for a long drive when the accident occurred. The driver responsible for the accident fled the scene, leaving the three students injured.7. Vanasthalipuram Hit-And-Run Case
A speeding car rammed into a 21-year-old woman walking on the roadside in Vanasthalipuram, Hyderabad. A purported video of the incident was accessed by Times Now, which showed a black car approaching towards the woman walking on the roadside. Within seconds of the video, the car struck her from behind, leaving her severely injured. After which, people passing by gathered to see the victim lying on the road. The accused driver fled from the scene after the accident.8. Chennai Hit-And-Run Case
A video journalist was killed after the two-wheeler he was riding was hit by a speeding BMW luxury car on the Maduravoyal-Tambaram bypass in Chennai. The incident occurred on November 19. Following the incident, he was thrown 100 metres from the scene and fell into a bush, where he died on the spot. Later, the driver abandoned the car and escaped from the scene.9. Moradabad Hit-And-Run Case
A man on a motorcycle died after a Thar ran over him, dragging him about 50 metres in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, on the Delhi-Lucknow National Highway. The incident occurred around midnight, when the victim, Aman, was out to buy a cake for his sister. The Thar driver allegedly ran over him and dragged him for some distance, resulting in his death on the spot. The incident took place near the Loco Shed bridge cut in the Civil Line police station area. According to the police, “The Thar, owned by a mattress trader, dragged the motorcyclist for nearly 50 metres, leaving the bike completely crushed.”10. Worli Hit-And-Run Case
A BMW car hit a couple of fishermen's community riding a bike from behind, leading to the death of the fisherman's wife. This incident occurred on July 7 when the couple was passing by Atria Mall in Worli. The accused detained by the police is the owner of the car and a deputy Leader of Shinde's Shiv Sena from Palghar. According to police sources, the couple, residents of Koliwada area in Worli, had gone to Sassoon Dock this morning to buy fish. While returning with the fish, their bike was struck from behind by a four-wheeler. The impact of the collision resulted in severe injuries to both individuals. They were rushed to Nair Hospital in Mumbai for medical treatment.
