WhatsApp will stop supporting iPhones running iOS versions below 15.1 from May 2025, affecting older models like iPhone 6.

WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running on iOS versions earlier than 15.1 starting from May 5, 2025. This decision affects models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus – devices that were released over a decade ago and are stuck on iOS 12.5.7 due to hardware limitations. Users of newer iPhone models can continue to access WhatsApp, provided their devices are updated to the latest iOS version. Both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business will follow this change, ensuring consistent system requirements. The move is part of WhatsApp’s strategy to optimise its app for modern technologies and improve user experience.

Why This Change?

WhatsApp was driven to make the decision based on some of the missing APIs and monitoring technologies available for the newer versions of iOS. Newer features incorporated into iOS 15 and beyond enable a much better performance and enhanced security. Supporting older versions of iOS requires additional effort with limited room for further app upgrades.
The affected iPhones count only a mere fraction of the entire user base of WhatsApp, so dropping these devices is meant to focus all its resources on improvements for the majority of users with modern hardware. As far as performance goes, this will make things lively, allowing new features in the long run.

What Are Your Options?

If you use iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, upgrading to a new iPhone running iOS 15.1 or later will allow you to continue using WhatsApp beyond May 2025. If you own one of the compatible models, update via Settings > General > Software Update.
Android users remain unaffected as there have been no announcements of any changes regarding WhatsApp’s system requirements on the platform. WhatsApp has given users nearly five months’ notice, thus allowing sufficient time for transition. Until May, all devices currently supported will continue to work uninterrupted.
