Button Mash Calls Game Over

Button Mash is closing its doors on Sept 29th. The bar/arcade is closing up due to rent and exceedingly higher costs to run a restaurant.

One thing is the food and ambience is/was way better then the bar/arcade on 5684 York Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90042, near Galco's Soda Pop Stop. A franchised arcade bar out of New York, not really an LA based placed. It's got some good units. But, for some reason, the last few times friends and I have checked it out, it's always got a sort of unfriendly community/people vibe. And, the food has never been good. You're not gonna get food as good as Button Mash's Poltergeist.

Eater LA has the full story

Visit them...if you can find parking, before they go.

The best part might have been getting your check in a scholastic paperback.

Further Out: Retrovolt Arcade & Extraordinaire Arcade

~This is part of our Further Out series. So, you'll be having to step out of the confines of LA and visit the outlands for a weekend/day trip to checkout these places.

Retrovolt is everything we want in an arcade. New games and old, special models imported from Japan. And, a place not afraid to have light. Oh, and games, games, games!

We'll say it, it's one of the nicest looking arcades we've been in and it isn't a barcade. Yo, cleanliness is a factor and this place, which isn't afraid to have the lights on or sunshine come in looks great. There's no fear of a sticky machine and I only saw one unit that wasn't working. (Should have reported it) Big colorful murals, nicely lined-up arcade machines and
a pinball section. And, it stretches with enough breathing room so it doesn't feel cramped.

The line-up, like I said, is probably the most impressive with a healthy pinball section with rare older games and newer machines like the latest Jaws pinball machine. Sterns' JAWS pinball has this great mechanic of hearing and seeing a fishing lure get pulled each time you shoot the ball on the board. HD scenes from the movie play with an amazing audio system that builds tension from the famous theme. So, newer titles are floating around.

As you enter you'll see some of the Japanese imports like the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy machine that let's you play along with songs from one of the longest running JRPG series. Ask, how to play as the game is in Japanese. Not far is a Sailor Moon side-scroller, beat-em up with the first five scouts playable and a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighter based on the Stardust Arc. Both look and sound great. When any of the Sailor Scouts use an ultimate attack their faces take over the whole screen and you'll swear you're seeing a clip from the anime. JoJo's machine also looks amazing; any fan of the series will be in awe of how good it looks. And, it makes sense, as Capcom hired series creator, Hirohiko Araki, as a consultant on the game.

More games as you go up or around. Classic and hard to find super-hero arcade machines. Now, I didn't see that hard-to-find Superman beat-em up, The Death and Return of Superman, which, online says there isn't an arcade unit, but one of us know it's real. What was real was The Punisher and it's a crazy co-up beat'em up where you can team-up with pre-Samuel Jackson Nick Fury. We must go back and complete it. These were games based on the comics before they got cartoons and movies. So, see a totally white version of Vision and other fun strange details.

There's something for everyone, all different genres to get into. Music, racing, rhythm, it's all there with classic favorite fighters.

And, even after spending an hour for $10 a person, it easily could have been more. Maybe, even a day of it with many a food option nearby.

If you're further out or along the way, give'm your money and play.

Retrovolt Arcade has been around for almost a decade and it shows with how well-maintained their arcade is.
I only hope they change up the arcade units every couple of months to have people coming back to try something new.

Nestled near the creepiest looking pizza sign is the Extraordinaire Arcade. This is the second arcade in San Bernadino we've been to recently in our extended travels on the outskirts of known LA civilization. Y' know, the places people go out to for a weekend on the way to Palm Springs, wine country or kind of near Disney.

Oh, and don't worry about the pizza place. We wandered into Pizza House for you, even though it looks like the sign should have been updated to not look like it was made by Blumhouse. Inside it looks they make pretty good pizza and they have their own arcade too, but it's not in the best condition, it's bad. Many of the machines look broken and are collecting dust. You might want to head over to the real arcade for games, unless you want to play some skee ball.

Extraordinaire Arcade lacks the style of Retrovolt. Though, it's right next to pizza just like it. What Extraordinaire does have is many old school classic hard to find cabinets of games you won't find at any Dave & Buster's. They have Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Punch-Out with the two screens vertically and some much older racers.

Just like the model of many arcades we've covered it's $10 an hour with everything on free play & $20
for an all day pass.

They have some of the newer shooters, but if your looking to play some older titles or any of the arcade Mortal Kombats, you come over here!

A section of newer consoles to play seems nice for younger kids, but if on a nostalgia quest or wanting to try older arcade machines you're gonna avoid that area.

Of the stranger things I saw was a wonderfully weird Episode 1 pinball machine. It sort of projects a holographic screen in the back so you kind of lose the ball when it enters it. It did so poorly being sold the company that made it, Williams, closed their pinball division.

Really, going to these types of arcades let's you look at features and controls you won't find with a keyboard and mouse or the latest console. Paperboy played with a handle bars was quite hard to handle.

And playing alongside or against a friend never gets old on titles that will take you back or have you wondering why did they make this.

And, of course they have Metal Slug.

Further Out: Revival Arcade In San Bernardino

If you find yourself further out and in San Bernardino, then there's an arcade you need to check out, Revival Arcade.

1395 N. E St, San Bernardino, CA 92405
Fri 4 - 10, Sat 12 - 10, Sun 12 - 8
$10/hr - all games on free play
$20 day pass

Right across from an unofficial McDonald's Museum is one of the nicest arcades we've been too in some time. This oasis in a "desert" or "further out" location has over 90 arcade games. This includes classic arcade machines, pinball and even console systems open to all willing to pay a $10 and hour fee or just go full in and pay $20 for a full day.

Now, TTDILA recently went out to the location over a weekend and like us, you'll see that hour fly bye.

After playing Smash TV and killing the weird as heck boss we got stuck on beating the whole Star Wars Trilogy Arcade that graced so many movie theaters in the late 90's/early 2000's. We were playing a big truck simulator and some pinball and of course, some rock band.

We even got into picking the music playing for the arcade by merely going up to a touch screen jukebox that would jam out old hits from Weird Al.

Now, other than some nostalgic arcade titles they have consoles ready to play and a collection of some Japanese arcade cabinets, like a Stuntman driving game we've never seen.

They're supposed to move titles in and out every so often, but, as it was out first time there, we're unsure how frequently that happens.

The only negative is that some of the machines did seem off or broken and some definite burn-in on some older arcade machines. Maybe, some cute signs saying, "Sorry, this machines is out", would help. Instead of having the rush of going up to a Elvira pinball machine and seeing that it doesn't work; breaking our hearts.

The style of the place is crazy hoarding Uncle junk collector and we love it.

There's even old school junk food machines, where you can grab nothing healthy for you except maybe water.

The $10 is totally worth it, but if you're gonna be there put down a $20 and spend as much time as you can before you're movie starts or really make a day of it.

*Just a reminder, this place is open weekends only.

Button Mash Back From The Dead

Button Mash 1391 Sunset Boulevard, , CA 90026 is back open tonight with food from Tacos 1986. This arcade bar has terrible parking, but a great aesthetic and been missing for a while, since 2020. Here's hoping we have good eats and games again.

Some Places To Go: Fugetsu-Do, O-Kashi, Player One, Round 1, Uncool Bar & More

LA has a vast amount of restaurants, eateries and stores that no other city has. There's such a diversity of what to check out and a new place to go or an old favorite. Here's a few places we were reminded of or just heard about that you should visit.

315 E 1st St Los Angeles, CA 90012
8am-5pm every day

The Japanese candy store that's been in Little Tokyo for ages has never seemed that inviting. Frequenting the area, we can't say its been a must for our visits. Mochi and Japanese sweets make an anomaly that you have to go to at least once. You'll get a pack of mochi to share with friends and it'll all be worth it. And if you like what you got, you gotta go again.

Totally a Mom & Pop operation, so its got nothing that fancy about it. It's just a place to snag some yummy sweets treats. Fugetsu-Do is as old school as it can get as it's almost a 120-years-old.

We'll reiterate, "Get the candy, then get out."

319 E 2nd St Ste 117 Los Angeles, CA 90012
12pm-5pm Wed-Sun

A street over is a wrapped and bagged Japanese sweets store that just opened up...and we're not sure if it'll survive much longer. You might want to check it out before it's gone. This new sweet shop is like many stores we've seen come-and-go in Little Tokyo; really not utilizing it's space. It hurts that it has candy that looks like you can find in one of the Japanese supermarkets nearby.

5126 Lankershim Blvd North Hollywood, CA 91601
6pm-1am, till 2am Fri-Sat

Who would think of another arcade bar in LA? Player One did. This is a place to remember your time at the arcade and play some old school arcade machines. Now, as an adult you can drink while doing it though. They have a collection of arcade cabinet favorites. And, they have a splattering of events like trivia, karaoke and bingo. So, team up with other X-Men for battle or try and beat up Ryu.

201 E Magnolia Blvd Burbank, CA 91502
10:00 AM - 2:00 AM every day

Located in the Burbank Town Center Mall, besieged by a triumvirate of AMC's, is our very own Japanese arcade...bowling alley/karaoke & billiards. Yes, Round 1's brand comes from Japan and gives us the sweet perk of Japanese arcade machines. Sadly, it doesn't bring any Japanese snacks. Eat anywhere else in the mall.

We've talked about Round 1 many times before on the site, but to get to any of them you'd have to drive far to LA's outlands, to the places of the banished and strange, like Pomona. Ooooooh! Scary. Now, it's an easy drive to Burbank and a pleasure to go to before or after a movie.

Round 1, just has hours of enjoyment with arcade games you won't find at Player One or even Dave & Buster's. And, a decent spot to sing karaoke that isn't downtown or Sawtelle is nice too.

*Tip, just pay for 2 hours of karaoke, 1 is never enough

7881 Santa Monica Blvd West Hollywood, CA 90046
OPEN EVERY DAY 11:00am to 2:00am

Dude, not cool. Or is it? That's what this bar/restaurant tries to pull off. It's got mixed reviews, but the name alone and some of the food options make us want to sink our teeth into one of the burgers at least once and snag a photo of the strange logo and look. The food does look mouthwatering and tasty.

305 N Harbor Blvd Ste 001 Fullerton
5:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day

For a trip near Disneyland, you might want to head down to The Cellar. This restaurant and winery is literally in the basement of a building and made up from an Imagineer who helped make Disneyland. Other than its amazing looks the menu is an expensive treat you should got to celebrate any occasion.

4519 Eagle Rock Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90041
Thurs: 3PM – 6PM / Fri – Sat: 12PM – 6PM
Sun: 12PM – 5PM hours fluctuate

This fun indie store features its own goods based on its own brand with indie comics and designer toys to rest on your desk. Oh, and even apparel.

We've got a comic book store/pinball arcade out in Eagle Rock. But, it seems to be so much more with board games, snacks and drinks and all kinds of fun fan merch inside. If there was a hole left inside your heart when Meltdown used to be, so many years ago, this place looks to fill it and also shove as many good things into that space as possible. Cuz, their stock of goods runneth over.

We're kind of in awe of both the inventory and the aesthetic. If out by Eagle Rock you've got to give it a look when comics drops now on Tuesdays and Wednesdays or just wait till Wednesday.

Reminds us of a bit of AYCE GOGI Van Nuys, which has a hidden Pinball arcade in the back. Oh, and looks like they have a special event this Saturday, March 5, 2022
