Biography

Zunyou Wu, MD, PhD, is the Chief Epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology in at the Fielding Schools of Public Health University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is a member of the UNAIDS Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee.

Dr. Wu graduated from UCLA with Ph.D. in Epidemiology in 1995. He was the Director of the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention in 2005-2017 directing overall implementation of HIV diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Dr. Wu conducts operational, scientific research at the grassroots level with sex workers, injecting drug users, former plasma donors, migrants, men having sex with men, and HIV infected individuals in China. He has disseminated his research findings by organizing national workshops that have later led to the development of national technical guidelines. His research findings have also been published in over 400 academic papers, and 230 of them have been in international scientific journals, including Science, Lancet. He also wrote 32 chapters of monograph including for Oxford Textbook for Public Health. Dr. Wu is active in promoting more supportive policies and environments for controlling HIV/AIDS in China. He is a leader in the field of HIV prevention strategies.

As a respected public health figure, Dr. Wu made great contribution in the development of China’s flagship policy on controlling HIV epidemic among drug use population. This policy is the only one of its kind in the developing world reaching large numbers of injecting drug users. In recognition, he was awarded the 2005 International Rolleston Award for being pioneer in implementing HIV intervention programs among injecting drug users in China.

Given his great contribution in the field of public health, Dr. Wu was honored with “Hall of Fame” of 2006 UCLA School of Public Health's Alumni, and awarded an UNAIDS Gold Medal in 2008. Dr. Wu also received many honors from Chinese government, including 11 awards in scientific and technological achievements.

In 2022, Dr. Wu was awarded with the WHO Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion for for his achievements in health promotion in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention.

Dr. Wu has served as a Temporary Consultant to UNAIDS, WHO, UNDP, UNODC, DFID, USAID, AusAID, the World Bank, the African Development Bank and other international organizations on different programs.
