Designation of points of entry under the International Health Regulations (2005)

Overview

As provided by the International Health Regulations (IHR) (2005), States Parties shall designate international airports and ports that shall develop the core capacities required as per Annex 1 of the IHR (2005) and may as well designate ground crossings, where justified for public health reasons. This factsheet summarizes the legal provisions in the IHR (2005) with regards to the process of designation of points of entry; the strategic risk assessment that should inform the process of designation; the core capacity requirements that need to be developed and maintained in designated points of entry; and the similarities and differences between the designation of points of entry under the IHR (2005), and the authorization process for ports to issue ship sanitation certificates.
