Performance Target (PT) Model
The WHO Performance Target (PT) model calculates the emission rates required for stoves, heaters, or lamps to achieve specific air quality and health targets. The PT model uses context-specific data to produce locally-relevant targets (or tiers of performance) for emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO).
To use the PT model, users must enter data on average kitchen size, time spent using the device per day, and air circulation characteristics. Based on this information, the model produces a set of emission rates needed to develop PM2.5 and CO emission tiers or targets that provide certain levels of health protection. The model estimates PM2.5 and CO emissions, as these two pollutants are both commonly emitted by indoor combustion devices (i.e. stoves, heaters, and lamps) and have well-established air quality guidelines (WHO 2005, 2010, 2014, 2021).
To facilitate model use, WHO has developed a set of protocols describing how the input data should be collected in field settings. In addition, WHO has compiled a database of input variables needed to run the model. If field data are not available, users can find input data in the database from a similar region to run the model.
