Obtaining a list of all GND IDs in DtBio

Property:P7902#P4876 currently has as the preferred statement: 825,319, 31 May 2021, reference URL http://data.deutsche-biographie.de/beta/solr-open/?q=defgnd:*&fl=defgnd&rows=1&wt=csv . Observations:

Is there any way to obtain a list of all GND IDs? The beacon at https://www.historische-kommission-muenchen-editionen.de/beacon_dtbio_gesamt.txt has "#TIMESTAMP: 2018-09-05", i.e. of no use for checking if a given GND ID exists in DtBio as a preferred GND ID.

Maybe there is a way to retrieve the records in several batches, but http://data.deutsche-biographie.de/about/#solropen doesn't even contain one of the strings "sort" or "order". HumanAFuser (talk) 08:44, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

I found a way to sort, so one could obtain it in four batches:

3310 IDs in WD but not in DtBio source as preferred ID

@Kolja21: I cannot detect what a redirect is. I am currently adding new DtBio IDs based on P227. If P227 is well maintained, then removal of all 3310 IDs should not result in any connection to DtBio be lost. Since DtBio is an aggregator, it could be that some sources disappeared and the item was then removed or not added anymore during re-build of the dataset. HumanAFuser (talk) 01:26, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis, Emu, Kolja21: That is all IDs that fall under the definition of P7902 but are not in WD. Whether they have an item already is not known by me. I downloaded all DtBio IDs, added ca. 18000 of them where the GND ID already existed in P227, then I compared all IDs I downloaded from them with all IDs stored in WD (P7902). If GND P227 would be 100% synced with WD humans, then the not-redirects-in-GND-DB among the 219108 would not have an item yet in WD. So, one could use the 219108 to query the GND LDS and then decide if they should be created in WD as new items. One should maybe only take items that have a VIAF in LDS and where the VIAF ID is not in WD and the VIAF cluster does contain a link to WD. Ideally all GND humans would be in WD and DNB would fix all bugs a bit faster. HumanAFuser (talk) 12:18, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
@HumanAFuser: It might be a good idea to start with a sample of, say, 2000 randomly chosen identifiers. They should be compared against Wikidata to match pre-existing items and evaluated in regard of the amount of information they provide (using OpenRefine springs to mind). I’m a bit wary about mass imports of people from GND – we still haven’t really digested the massive influx in the 94… and 95… range. But if done properly, there might be many benefits. The question is, how should we proceed? Sure:
  1. About a year ago (mid-2020), a now indefinitely blocked user (blocked for sockpuppeting) created a large number of GND-based items. At the same time another large import (BLKÖ) was added. Because the items were created during that time, their item IDs mostly start with Q94… and Q95 …. The imports have their merits, but they are a mixed bag as a lot of items were created that had a limited number of statements, so a lot of polishing and merging has still to be done.
  2. GND 100260721 (Hieronymus Roth von Schreckenstein (Q55914689)) and GND 116327723 (Friedrich Rampold (Q100165817)) are on your list of missing items/identifiers but both have a GND ID (P227) and even a Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID (P7902) identifier. (Those are just random examples.)

I think the picture by @Emu: describes very well the present situation. Personally I'm convinced, as you all say, that imports might have benefits but also tend to create relevant amount of backlog to be managed manually. In particular, regarding "the massive influx in the 94… and 95… range" I would point out the need of emptying https://w.wiki/3VzL (1494 items in the 94… and 95… range, as of now, having GND ID (P227) and also a VIAF ID (P214) whose value is also present in another item; sometimes the VIAF value in these items is simply wrong and should be substituted with one correct, while in other cases these items should be merged with preexisting ones). After the emptying of this list I think we can seriously make a reasoning on a new batch-import of some tens of thousands of items from GND having at least dates of birth/death and occupation, because it can be (complessively) highly beneficial for Wikidata. I merged several (~400, Property_talk:P227/Duplicates#human went down to 6 items), it looked as if the BLKÖ-items didn't have sex/gender and didn't have GND ID when created, so causing several violations, but the items by indef blocked user had GND ID and sex/gender and VIAF and many more statements, added by Epìdosis following the initial creation. When GND IDs are added to other objects one can merge via Property_talk:P227/Duplicates#human and has the benefit of all the data derived from GND-based creations. re 2) I confirm that 100260721 is on an item and was in my list. Thank you! Either I made a mistake or SPARQL didn't gave correct results. May try again. List A : all preferred IDs in DtBio. List B : all 7902 in WD. List C : all human GND that have no P7902 (https://w.wiki/3VzN). A-B=D (all candidates) I then added D to C-items. Then calculated D-C. It’s hard to tell what the current problem is as people use Wikidata in a lot of different ways and have very different needs when it comes to items and statements. But I can tell you what my current problem is: I do a lot of matching, both to online and offline reference works. Matching is easier for some items as they already exist due to mass imports – especially if they have a lot of statements, especially occupation (P106), full date of birth (P569) and date of death (P570), place of birth (P19) and place of death (P20). But items with few statements don’t save work, they create even more work as I have to find out who this GND is supposed to be about, if there are duplicates within GND or Wikidata, etc. In many cases it would be easier the other way around, i.e. creating new items and then matching GND on them.
Anyway, I’m not really convinced that it should be a goal to import all GND ID (P227) or even Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID (P7902) items into Wikidata with all their various imperfections and duplicates. Importing them on a case-by-case basis once we need them for some reason or the other might prove to be a better strategy. --Emu (talk) 23:27, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

  • “Please explain what the current problem with these items is …”: Creating items without a specific need is only useful if those items are readily usable. For items about people this generally means the inclusion of statements like occupation (P106), full date of birth (P569) and date of death (P570), place of birth (P19) and place of death (P20), proper labels and descriptions in at least one language. The 94/95 items sometimes consist of little more than a label, a GND link and only few statements. That’s a problem because it’s sometimes actually more work to use them than to create new items.
  • “… and when you will consider them "fully digested"” They will be fully integrated (in the sense of fully usable) after adding a bunch of statements, some duplicate control and feedback to the DNB. So probably not in the next years, probably never, as we lack the necessary number of users.
  • “but matching would be easier, because there is more data” Well, no, the existence of items can actually be a hurdle for matching, see above. Believe me, I’ve done quite some matching over the last year.
  • “that has nothing to do with the item being in WD or not. Ignore it if you like, or if you want to be complete with one item, you have to look it up in GND too.” That might be true in theory, but in reality, it’s much easier to find the proper GND after the person is clear than to try to make sense of a Wikidata item with very little information. Again, this opinion of mine is based on many, many hours of matching. That might be a limited point of view but at least it’s based on some empirical findings. Do you also have experience in matching or other activities that you could share so I understand your point of view better?

@Emu, Epìdosis: I opened https://w.wiki/3VzL and checked the first five lines, I also found a third user that created new items in that range [6]. I merged in each case [7]. The first item in each line missed the GND ID, otherwise it would have been done already during clean-up of Property_talk:P227/Duplicates#human. Cleaning this list is independent from creating new GND-based items, since the second item always has a GND ID already and no new item would be created for that GND ID. On top of that, it seems highly beneficial to have the Q9 items in this VIAF-duplicates-list, since with one merge operation one can enrich the older item very easily. Das Beispiel spricht imho nicht gegen Massenimporte, sondern es kommen zwei Schlampereien zusammen: Der Bot hätte mehr Informationen imporieren müssen (Tätigkeit, Abrufdatum, URL etc.), und die Deutsche Biographie hat mit der Löschung des Datensatzes gegen bibliothekarische Regeln verstoßen. ✓ OK Die Fehler in Horst Döhnert (Q95006759) sind behoben. Ich lege Wert auf die Feststellung, dass ich nicht Massenimporte ablehne (die ich ja selbst mehrfach schon durchgeführt habe), sondern Massenimporten 1) ohne brauchbare Identifizierungsmerkmale 2) ohne aktuellen Anlass 3) auf der Basis von möglicherweise volatilen Identifiern – hier sind alle drei Merkmale erfüllt. +1. Den Zusatz "ohne brauchbare Identifizierungsmerkmale" habe ich in der Tat überlesen, was immer dann passiert, wenn man sich ärgert. Ich bin nach wie vor sauer auf die DNB, dass dort jahrelang das Problem mit den Tns ausgesessen wurde (man hat sie 1:1 in die GND überführt, obwohl damals schon klar war, dass das Konzept nicht mehr tragfähig ist) und dann vor einem Jahr auf einen Schlag alle Datensätze gelöscht wurden, ohne die Titel vorher umzuverknüpfen. (Anhand der Katalogierierungslevel hätte man leicht eine Auswahl der Tns treffen können, die bevorzugt abzuarbeiten sind.) @HumanAFuser: Ich verstehe die Frage nicht. Adam Müller (Q350488) hat eine GND, aber (noch) keinen Eintrag in DtBio. I deleted the Tn value, since there was no proof it referred to that human described in the item, note that the definition of Tn was something like "not-individualised name"

Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P7902#"Single_value" violations has 1114 violations. @Epìdosis: can Bargioni check each ID in this list with a script and report triples of Qid, old value and new value where the old value (=external [DtBio-GND] id) has been redirected and new value is the target value? The values could then be replaced by QS. If that creates two equal statements, then the value could simply be deleted, or it can be cleaned up later. Maybe there is a bot that removes any duplicated statement. Note: Check has to be done on DtBio site, not GND, because the GND can have redirects that don't exist yet in DtBio. P7902 clean-up - 3443x ID in P7902 but not in DtBio-solr-GND-list

@Epìdosis: Can be done with sparql "VALUES", this would then also only show Qid-P7901 pairs where the P7902 has not been removed in the meantime. Maybe the list of "404 errors" could be pasted below in a new subsection below "3443 list ID in WD but maybe not in DtBio" - and it would also included IDs that have been removed in the meantime, but then there is proper documention. @HumanAFuser, Kolja21, Emu: 3443 IDs below have been checked by Bargioni and all of them were effectively defunct; https://quickstatements.toolforge.org/#/batch/57668 removed them. I think this section and "3310 IDs in WD but not in DtBio source as preferred ID" can probably be archived in the next days. By the way, many cases in which P227 remains without P7902 are due to the redirection of P227 to a new value (e.g.); this will surely need further work. Anyway, another step forward. But July is near and hopefully a new dump will be published soon at https://data.dnb.de/opendata/ and hopefully DtBio installs it fast. Auch an dieser Liste zeigt sich, dass eine Löschung fehlerhafter IDs, ohne weitere Kontrolle, kontraproduktiv ist. Die Angaben in Erhard Bieger (Q94762956) (1931-1992) beruhen auf dem ehemaligen Eintrag in der Deutschen Biographie. Vandalism since February 2021 - how to prevent

@HumanAFuser: Considering that I've never seen vandalisms from autopatrolled users, the focus should be on unpatrolled edits. Checking each day all the edits in this list, patrolling the correct ones and reverting the vandalism, would probably avoid nearly the 100% of vandalisms on items containing P7902. This obviously regards future vandalisms. For the past, I tend to be confident that most vandalisms get reverted and that most non-reverted vandalisms can be found through constraint violations; the above, not falling into a constraint violation, was particularly insidious. --Epìdosis 17:24, 26 June 2021 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: is there a way to see unpatrolled edits to only the P7902 statement? Another way to find errors might be to compare with the value in P227, in most cases this should be a 1:1 relationship, a CV check for this is installed. HumanAFuser (talk) 07:24, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
As far as I know, no way to see unpatrolled edits to only the P7902 statement. Pasting the concatenated results of the four solr-lists [37] into http://www.listdiff.com/compare-2-lists-difference-tool indicated 186 duplicates. 255x P7902 but not P227

There are 255 IDs not in P227 as regular or best values. At least five different settings exist:

  1. Multiple values in P227, one value in P227 is marked deprecated
    1. https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q5977632&oldid=1418407854#P227 one value in P227 is deprecated (100204783 reason for deprecation unconfirmed) but in P7902 both are listed as normal values. The cause is in this edit from 2020-07-10 [38]. There was an error in Pacelli-editions and that was reported to them and to DtBio 2020-07-10. Wikidata keeps the errors due to poor management of P7902 and P227.

      The removed GND ID was added 2015-04-29 accompanied by a claim stated twice, namely in "qualifier" and "reference" that it was imported from a Wikiproject "Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences" (Q1419226) [39], but there is no evidence that "Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences" ever was a Wikiproject. Handling of values that are not a preferred GND ID and absence of a value

The insertion of values that are not a preferred GND ID into Property:P7902 "Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID" disallows easy direct comparison of the values in P7902 with:

  1. values in Property:P227
  2. values in the DtBio-solr-GND-list [40]

and creates long lists of constraint violations that due to the quantity of violations disallow seeing even vandalism easily.

In June 2021 thousands of values that are not a preferred GND ID in DtBio or a GND ID at all have been removed. Also the format constraint was improved [41] to easily detect some of these values and warn editors directly on each item and log occurrences via a Wikidata:Database report [42].

A small subset of the values that were not GND ID had been marked:

  1. text string, e.g. "ohne GND (28.01.2020)" 2020-05-19 inserted by batch nine edits to the property between 2020-05-28 and 2021-03-01 2021-06-23 removed
  2. eight digit strings, in variable environment settings, even when the underlying situation and the user creating the marks were the same:

  4. five no value claims having "Normal rank" created by one user between 2020-05-14 22:22 and 2020-05-15 07:26 without any visible longterm strategy nor explanation why these five out of millions have been marked [43]
    1. having "Normal rank" 2020-05-15 created next to a GND ID value also having "Normal rank" 2021-06-17 added by batch and 2021-06-23 "no value" removed
    2. four others still present, even if the person does not have a page in DtBio
  5. 10-digit string, found via a full comparison of lists of IDs and the coincidence that it was placed at the end of the generated result list [44] 2021-02-21 non-GND-ID value inserted 2021-06-26 removed

By removing values that were not preferred GND IDs, hundreds of single value violations have been resolved [45]

But some edits even in June 2021 insert values that are not a GND ID. A user that created several of the above mentioned P7902 settings even insists on inserting values into Property:P7902 "Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID" that are not a GND ID [46] and "substantiates" by providing a reference URL that leads to a page that doesn't even mention any GND ID.

Another way to manage P7902 is to only store:

  1. GND IDs that are preferred at the DtBio site, i.e. not the DtBio redirects which are derived from the GND LDS dump, and change any values that are redirected to the target
  2. no value - where a DtBio page exists, but no GND ID value exists in DtBio, and link to the DtBio page via reference URL set to the SFZ-URL of the page

That allows for easier constraint violation checks, batch operations, vandalism detection, reporting to DtBio. That is due to the fact, that there are fewer special settings involved which even by the same user are applied inconsistently, and the property simply tracks Property:P227 (GND ID). Examples:

  1. if a value exists in P7902 but not in P227 for more than ~4 months (GND LDS dumps are currently published more or less in a distance of 4 months, and the dumps are the basis for redirect resolution in DtBio), then one of the values might be incorrect.
  2. if there isn't a single value in P7902 which mirrored by a single value in P227 then something might be false in WD or could be reported to DtBio or DNB. There is a constraint violation check testing for equality of the values in P7902 and P227 2021-06-17 : 3727 2021-06-28 : 3488 - still a lot to do
  3. if a value exists in P227 and P7902 has "no value" the P227 value can be reported to DtBio
  4. if a single value violation exists, it could be reported to the German National Library (DNB) so they can verify if they are duplicates and merge the items in the GND DB, which will then be installed in DtBio and the single value violation in P7902 be resolved. https://w.wiki/3YKk : 980

Cases that don't have a single value and 1:1 match with Property:P227 may also be caused by the management of P227, which is also inconsistent, some redirects are stored, some not, some marked in one way, some in another, see sections "Value not in GND" and following, some user replying repeatedly to different inconsistency reports with "It’s a wiki. Just fix it and stop creating pointless discussions" (2021-06-25 22:54 and 2021-06-26 11:45)

200000+ GND IDs from DtBio-solr-GND-list are not stored in P7902 yet and the amount of preferred GND values in DtBio may further increase. Professional management of P7902 using proper documentation, consistent settings and reporting back to the data sources is a way to better align Wikidata with https://www.wikimedia.org/ : "Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world.". 199930 of the values from the DtBio-GND-solr-list are not stored in P7902 (as in https://w.wiki/3ZAD). Of these 843 are stored in P227 (as in https://w.wiki/3ZAM). A reverse check via SPARQL, see below, found that six of these values are already stored in P7902 (117044873, 117673471, 126911800, 129794724, 137565526, 1052051189, 1061892026) and another reverse check of the 843 values on P227 gave 846 results.
