(In January 1934, the Palitzes brought Dr. Held to safety in New York. His mentor Dr. Friedländer survived in Amsterdam, his life spared because he advised collector-thieves including Dirk Menten’s brother Pieter.)In 1933, Pieter Menten was already living full time in Poland, growing rich from businesses including lumber. He and Dirk kept homes full of paintings in Holland, France and Belgium. (They may have obtained art through their cousin Hubert Menten, a collector and dealer in Berlin whose clients included Göring.)Dirk ran a leather factory in Belgium that ended up supplying belts for Nazi uniforms. (He was convicted of economic collaboration after the war but suffered few consequences.) In Poland, during the war, Pieter stuffed stolen art into his train cars and led Nazi gangs who shot hundreds of villagers and dumped them into mass graves. (English)

Menten transported war booty to Holland, where after World War II he was sentenced to several months in jail for the general charge of “assisting the enemy” over his chumminess with Nazi officers. The multimillionaire art dealer escaped more serious charges by libeling his accusers, but ultimately was exposed after trying to auction off stolen goods.Knoop, then the editor-in-chief of a medium-circulation weekly owned by the Telegraaf daily, began researching testimonies collected in Israel by the late Haaretz journalist Haviv Cnaan, whose family was among Menten’s victims.Knoop headshotHans KnoopKnoop was warned off the story by people whose own careers were ruined by Menten when they threatened to expose him. He soon realized they were right.Knoop was forced to quit the Telegraaf soon after his investigation was published because, he said, another reporter for the paper “began spying” on Knoop at Menten’s behest. And while he toured the world giving lectures about the Menten case, no other major publication in the Netherlands would hire Knoop “because I had a stamp of my forehead,” he recalled. (English)

Pieter Nicolaas Menten, the most notorious Nazi war criminal in the Netherlands, died here Saturday in a nursing home, according to Dutch television. He was 88 years old. No cause of death was given. Mr. Menten, a wealthy art collector, was convicted in the killings of dozens of Jews in the Polish village of Podhoroce while he was a translator with an SS unit of the German Army in 1941.In 1985, he was freed from prison on good behavior after serving two-thirds of a 10-year sentence. He entered the nursing home last July. Served 8 MonthsMr. Menten had also served an eight-month prison term in 1949 for collaborating with the Nazis, and in the early 1950's Poland twice tried unsuccessfully to have him extradited for war crimes. But for more than 25 years after the war Mr. Menten and his wife, Meta, lived quietly in a 40-room mansion 20 miles outside Amsterdam.
