Help welcome
[edit]I'm learning WikiData culture and methods as I work to get some things done here that will be helpful in my research. Please point me in the right direction if I head off on a wrong trajectory somewhere.
Multiple DOI prefixes for organization
[edit]Greetings. I undid this edit https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q193755&diff=prev&oldid=1243554194 as the resource was not found. Please feel free to restore it if I was in error. Trilotat (talk) 01:03, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the check on the additional DOI identifier prefix that I added. This was originally generated for USGS through a partnership with the California Digital Library, so it may appear in some records that it belongs to a different entity. However, a check of DataCite records will show that USGS is always listed as the publisher for assets assigned DOIs in this space. I do see now that WikiData is throwing a flag on normally only having a single value constraint on the DOI prefix property. I'll have to check into the best way to get around that as both prefixes are valid for USGS - one issued by CrossRef and the other by DataCite. In fact, many organizations will be in a similar position with multiple valid DOI prefixes (mergers between organizations, etc.). --Skybristol (talk) 14:51, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- Okay. I clicked on the DOI prefix (P1662) 10.5066 on the USGS item and it came back with "Resource not found." The other DOI that was there previously, 10.3133, returns the standard crossref prefix. Wikidata sends you to the crossref link for the DOI prefix. If the doi prefix 10.5066 was not issued by crossref, maybe that's the wrong place for that prefix, meaning maybe only a crossref-sourced doi should go in that field. I don't know. I'm not familiar with datacite, but the folks who are familiar with the property might be, so maybe they can adjust the property accordingly. Trilotat (talk) 18:00, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- I had not noticed that the UI generated a link to the CrossRef API for that property. Thanks so much for pointing that out. I will dig into the property a bit more and check to see if there is perhaps a specific property somewhere for DataCite DOIs. The API from doi.org might be a more appropriate one for that property to be using (10.5066 & 10.3133). Thanks again for the engagement on this. I'm new here and trying to learn WikiData. --Skybristol (talk) 18:11, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm just glad there is someone else interested in USGS content here on WikiData. I've been working mostly on citations, lithostratigraphic content and, most recently, faults. I've only got a very basic academic background in geology, but it's enough to inspire love for the material and respect for the folks who research and publish content. Also, I think the USGS is an awesome agency. I wish my career path linked me to them, but I went another way after High School. Thanks for being here and good luck with your WD journey. Oh, and please let me know if I can help, if you have a project you'd like to collaborate on, or if you want to correspond about ideas. Trilotat (talk) 22:50, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
