Motivation
[edit]In the discussion at Wikidata:Property proposal/planetary coordinates, we identified a series of problems with using coordinate location (P625) for places on the Moon (among other non-Earth bodies):
- Method varies from one astronomical body (planet/satellite/asteroid/) to another
- Wikimedia functions for maps don't all correctly check for globe and generally need custom code to "exclude" non-Earth locations.
- Users might incorrectly assume that P625 is the only property for coordinates. However, we already have a series of separate properties for places on Earth and a group of properties for celestial coordinates
- Wikidata Query Server has some handling of globes, notably functions have a globe parameter. However, the globe needs to be hard-coded and distance adjusted for the globe. Accordingly, queries need to be globe specific
Also:
- Interface doesn't support setting globes
- Current application at Commons has a problem with the inclusion of places on the Moon in coordinate location (P625)
- Applications working with both Earth and moon coordinates on WMF sites seem rare (or inexistent)
@ArthurPSmith, Paperoastro: can you help me complete the proposal? (Add your motivation for this property here.) --- Jura 21:07, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Question I agree this is necessary, but are we going to create properties for each celestial body? NMaia (talk) 00:29, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- The idea is to first create this one and see how it goes, what issues we might have to solve. --- Jura 00:35, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support Proposal looks good to me, thanks for doing it. ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:59, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support This property will simplify queries and constraint monitoring --Paperoastro (talk) 16:37, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
