Wiki Movimento Brasil will support the WikidataCon 2021

Hello all,

As previously mentioned, the WikidataCon 2021 will take place in October next year, in a distributed hybrid format: most of the contents will be spread online, while user groups may be able to organize local events, depending on the situation in their region.

We’re very happy to announce that after discussing with several organizations who were particularly involved with Wikidata events in the past, we partnered up with Wiki Movimento Brasil to support the organization of the conference.

You may already have heard of the awesome series of events Wikidata Labs organized by Wiki Movimento Brasil. They are also involved in several other Wikidata-related projects, building partnerships with GLAM organizations and supporting the community in Brazil. By working together, we will ensure that the program includes a great diversity of speakers and we will prepare a physical event to gather the Wikidata community in Brazil.

The selection process for the partner location included a pre-selection of several organizations in countries outside of Europe and North America, and took in account several criteria, focussing on the past experiences in organizing events, the reliability and sustainability of the group, as well as various practical considerations. Part of the WikidataCon budget provided by Wikimedia Germany will be used to support events in Brazil and including participants from this country. If you’re interested in knowing more about the process, feel free to contact me, I’ll gladly give more details.

Of course, the participation of other chapters, user groups and local Wikidata communities is still very welcome: in the next few months, I’ll share more information about how local groups can be involved in running side events or participate in the program design. Stay tuned on this page!

We’re very excited to work hand in hand with Wiki Movimento Brasil and to experiment with the new hybrid format of the conference together!

WikidataCon update - January 2021

Hello all,

Here comes a new update about the WikidataCon 2021! As a reminder, the conference dedicated to the Wikidata community will take place on October 29-31, 2021, with an experimental hybrid format: most of the content will be available online, so people can participate from anywhere in the world. On top of that, we hope to be able to organize local onsite gatherings, in Berlin and São Paulo, but also in any location where a local group decides to organize a local WikidataCon gathering. Of course, we need to be especially flexible, depending on the state of the global pandemic at that moment.

Since the last update, where we announced that the conference would be co-organized by Wikimedia Germany and Wiki Movimento Brasil, we continued working on the collaboration between the two organizations: the agreement, conditions and funding between two NGOs on an international level includes some necessary paperwork. We are also defining the roles and activities of the various people involved in this ambitious project.

We have also started looking for external sponsors. In order to diversify our sources of income, and to ensure a great experience for the WikidataCon participants, we are reaching out to various organizations to see how they could contribute to the effort (funding, but also in terms of infrastructure, tools or human resources). We are of course very careful about choosing organizations that could sponsor the event and the impact it could have on the participants' experience. As soon as we have news on sponsors that we can communicate publicly, we will do it as transparently as possible. If you are part of an organization that would be interested in supporting the WikidataCon, feel free to reach out to us (sponsorwikidataconwikimedia.de for Germany and wikidataconwmnobrasil.org for Brazil) so we can tell you more about the possibilities and conditions.

We are also working a lot on the concept of the conference, the structure it could have, taking into account the challenge of the hybrid format (tools, accessibility, time zones…) as well as the program and its main topics. The discussions are still ongoing, but we can already tell you that during the conference, we want to highlight various challenges of Wikidata and how we can solve them together. The contribution of Wiki Movimento Brasil is especially important to raise awareness on the issues encountered by communities in the Global South, and their hopes on how Wikidata’s structure, content and community could represent the diversity of the world in a more inclusive way. Discussions about how to decenter Wikidata from its current focus on Europe and North America will definitely take an important place during the WikidataCon. We also want to address the various challenges that we are facing while Wikidata is growing: in terms of infrastructure, but also content, data quality and community processes.

We are still defining how the program will be built. We would like to move away from the process we had for the past editions, which was a great call for proposals followed by an intense selection phase. We hope to find a new process that allows, among other things, more diversity among the speakers. Of course, there will still be a huge part of the conference dedicated to community contributions, that may take the form of self-organized sessions. We hope to be able to give you more information in the next few months; in the meantime, you can already start thinking about how you could contribute to the WikidataCon based on the hints we gave you above!

If you’re involved in a local group or chapter, you can also note down the date in your calendar, and start discussing with your group members about your possible involvement in the WikidataCon. We are very excited to onboard local organizers in the process, and we will definitely gather ideas and wishes in the next few months about how we can connect the local communities together during the hybrid event, and what technical infrastructure we can provide to bring local events to a global scale.

WikidataCon update - June 2021

Hello all,

The WikidataCon 2021 team has moved forward with the conference organization and we are proud to share with the community many exciting news: the conference theme, its three day program structure and a special project on diversity taking place before the conference itself.

For the past nine years, Wikidata has been rapidly growing: more data, more contributors, more reuse of the data by various stakeholders. Where are we headed? What is our compass point? Who is doing this journey with us? Who should be with us and is not yet?

During the WikidataCon 2021, we want to envision a sustainable future for Wikidata and address challenges the Wikidata ecosystem faces while the project is growing. We are especially interested in tackling four interrelated points in the conference:

• technical infrastructure;
• data quality;
• community health; and
• diversity.

So for 2021, we’ll go with “WikidataCon 2021: A sustainable future for Wikidata”!

We especially want to raise awareness on the issues encountered by communities in the Global South and marginalized communities in the Global North, and their hopes on how Wikidata’s structure, content and community could represent the diversity of the world in a more inclusive way. Before, during and after the conference, we will lead discussions about how to decenter Wikidata from its current focus on Europe and North America and how to address the biases that currently exist in the structure of the data and in the community.

For doing so, we also proudly announce the “Reimagining Wikidata from the margins” project: starting in June, Wiki Movimento Brasil will coordinate a series of discussions with communities in the Global South and other marginalized communities from the Global North. This is an open invitation to think about how more diverse people can add their local knowledge to the database while meaningfully joining our community. It is about connecting with each other's realities and perspectives, understanding its challenges and expectations, and working together to foster a plural environment in our ecosystem!

We’ll release at WikidataCon a document/manifesto based on the discussions with individuals and communities. If you’re interested in participating in this process, please, sign up on the project page and I’ll contact you for further details.

Last but not least, we also want to share with you that the conference taking place at October 29, 30 and 31 will be structured in the following way:

• Day one: Formal program & networking + Wikidata birthday celebration
• Day two: Community sessions
• Day three: Hackathon & special events

This will be a distributed event with a full online program that people can access and participate from anywhere in the world. Although São Paulo will not host an in person event as initially planned due the hardening of the pandemic in Brazil, the possibility of connecting local gatherings to the online program is still valid, if your chapter or group is based somewhere sanitary safe. Let’s explore how to safely celebrate Wikidata and our community!

WikidataCon update - August 2021

Hello all,

As the organization team at Wiki Movimento Brasil and Wikimedia Germany is moving forward with designing and preparing the conference, we will be able to share more exciting news with you over the next few weeks. Today, we would like to remind you of the general context and structure of the WikidataCon 2021, to let you know about our experimental grant program for Latin America and the Caribbean, and to give you a glimpse of the next steps and milestones for the conference.

First of all: the WikidataCon 2021 is taking place in a bit more than two months, on October 29th, 30th and 31st. Since the current state of the pandemic doesn’t allow onsite events in Berlin or São Paulo, nor international travels, the conference will take place entirely online and all sessions, presentations and workshops will be accessible through our remote event platform Venueless. We hope that this remote format will allow more people from various countries to participate in the WikidataCon 2021.

The first day of the conference will include various keynotes and presentations curated by the organization team. The detailed program will be available soon, but we can already mention a few topics that will be highlighted on Day 1, related to the main topic of the conference, envision a sustainable future for Wikidata: we will talk about knowledge justice and decolonization with Whose Knowledge, discover the preliminary results of Reimagining Wikidata from the margins, address the technical challenges of Wikidata, dive into the experiments of Brazilian cultural institutions, and explore the future of Wikidata and Abstract Wikipedia.

The first day will also include the now traditional birthday celebration sessions - birthday presents, community awards, and of course, a birthday party! These events will be organized together with some active community members, and we can’t wait to reveal more about how you can contribute to Wikidata’s ninth anniversary.

The second and third day of the conference will be entirely yours! An open unconference format will allow participants to schedule discussions, presentations and workshops, organized in different tracks, and covering a large time slot to accommodate various time zones. More information will come soon and you will be able to schedule sessions starting at the beginning of October. In the meantime, you can already think about the kind of sessions you would like to organize or participate in, and discuss on this talk page.

In 2021, with the collaboration between Wikimedia Germany and Wiki Movimento Brasil, the WikidataCon has a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean, and we would especially like to encourage people from these regions to participate in the conference. This is why we designed a grant process that will support affiliates from Latin America and the Caribbean to organize pre-conference online events, in order to onboard their local communities to Wikidata and ensure a smooth transition to the conference. The grant will also cover an “e-scholarship” to support people from these communities to attend the WikidataCon in the best possible conditions.

You can find more information about the grant here. The call for proposals is now open until September 12th.

As this process is new for the organizers (collaboration between two Wikimedia chapters, allocating grants to other affiliates for online events), and requires a significant amount of human resources, we decided to focus our experiment on Latin America and the Caribbean. This means that unfortunately, people and organizations from other areas of the world will not be able to request support from the WikidataCon organizing team for local events and e-scholarships.

As the conference is approaching, we will update the different sub-pages of Wikidata:WikidataCon 2021 and post updates more regularly on this talk page. Here’s an overview of the next steps and what you can expect to come in the next few weeks:

• More information about the program of Day 1, the organizations supporting the conference, and the tools that we will use to run the online conference: beginning of September
• Call for proposal for the Latin America and the Caribbean grant: August 25 to September 12 (see more details here)
• Registration opens: September 15th
• More information about the unconference tracks and the community awards: end of September

Venueless

As far as I read Venueless is planned to be used as the software for the conference platform. I attended since last year at five online events in Wikimedia context that took at least 3 days. How is it possible to find other people and talk to them. I think one important point of a conference are the conversations with people also outside of presentations or discussions scheduled in the program. At the Wikimedia Hackathon this year there was Workadventure and at Wikimania there was Remo the conference platform software. At both solutions it was possible to have conversations with different number of people and see at a kind of map where the other people in the same area are. How is that possible in Venueless or is there the plan to use another platform for the social part of the conference. Hello, Venueless will indeed be the main platform for the conference. It will be possible to find other participants as there will be a list of all users with some information on their profile. It will be possible to talk to them on the various thematic text channels that we will set up for the event, as well as discussing in private.

We will not use a spatialized chat like WorkAdventure or Remo for the WikidataCon. One of the reasons is that most of these tools don't work well on mobile and require a good internet connection, and we want to make sure that our audience can enjoy the experience of the conference on any device. We also want to avoid the confusion of using multiple tools for socializing and we aim to keep it simple and accessible. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 07:25, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

I found in the main program a point social gathering on the 29th October at 16 o'clock UTC. There I read something from a room where it is possible to walk around. What will you use for this social gathering. At the German WikiCON there was an integration of Wonder.me in Venueless what was used as the online conference tool. At wonder.me I was not able to join before acitvating also the camera. It seemed as there the picture after joining is used as the avatar and this one can be then replaced. If you use a system where this happens when joining a virtual room where it is possible to walk around the first time, then please mention that and try to avoid using such a system.--Hogü-456 (talk) 19:14, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

WikidataCon update - Program of the first day and Wikidata birthday

Hello all,

The WikidataCon, the conference dedicated to the Wikidata community and co-organized by Wikimedia Deutschland and Wiki Movimento Brasil, is taking place online on October 29-31, around the theme “a sustainable future for Wikidata”. In this update, we are very excited to share with you the first announcements about the program of the event!

On October 29th, the first day of the conference, you will discover a program of keynotes and round table discussions carefully curated by the organizing team. Knowledge equity, Abstract Wikipedia, the technical challenges of the Query Service, and an overview on how Brazilian cultural institutions use Wikidata, are some of the topics that will be presented during this first day. We will also have various celebrations related to Wikidata’s anniversary that will allow us to celebrate achievements of the community and discover new projects. You can have an overview of the program of Day 1 here.

On the next two days of the conference, the program will be made of presentations, discussions and workshops coming directly from the participants. We will have several thematic tracks split during three time slots, to allow people from various time zones to attend. The content of these tracks will be proposed by the Wikidata community. This process will start at the beginning of October. More information will be added on this page in the next few weeks.

To support us in running this very ambitious event, five organisations are sponsoring the WikidataCon. You will find a description of the sponsors here. Some of these organizations are already benefiting from the amazing content of Wikidata, and their contribution to the conference is one of the ways they can engage more with the community and support the future of the project.

October is also the celebration of Wikidata’s ninth anniversary, as the project was officially started on October 29th, 2012. Every year, community members work together on birthday presents that will be showcased during the WikidataCon. You will find the ninth birthday page here, and you can already think about a birthday present you would like to prepare.

WikidataCon update - Registration for the online conference is now open

The WikidataCon, the conference dedicated to the Wikidata community and co-organized by Wikimedia Deutschland and Wiki Movimento Brasil, is taking place online on October 29-31, around the theme “a sustainable future for Wikidata”. We are happy to let you know that the registration form is now available!

The conference will take place on the online platform Venueless, which includes a livestream display for the presentations and keynotes of Day 1, some workshop rooms for the workshops and discussions of the community program on Day 2 and 3, as well as integrated text channels. This will be the main “venue” for the conference, the place where you can find the other participants and exchange with them. Registering for the conference will allow you to access this platform and fully enjoy the experience of the event.

Registration is free of charge and will remain open until October 29. You will need to enter a valid email address in order to receive the access link to the conference that will be enabled a few days before the event. We encourage you to register as soon as possible, so you can receive special updates and practical information about the event.

We are also excited to give you more information about the community program that will take place on the second and third days of the conference. As we expect discussions and workshops to take place on various topics, organized and attended by people from different time zones, we designed thematic tracks that will take place during specific time slots. You can find an overview of these tracks and slots here. A call for proposals will be open from September 21 to October 20, where you will be able to propose a session in one of these tracks. WikidataCon update - How to contribute to the WikidataCon?

As more information about the conference is released, for example the program of the main track on Day 1, you may be wondering how you could contribute more actively to the conference. In this update, we will share with you a few options to get involved in the event.

🏅 Nominate your favorite Wikidata projects for an award

The WikidataCon community awards will take place during the conference to celebrate the work of people and groups involved in Wikidata, and highlight some projects nominated by the community. Until October 10th, you are able to nominate one or several Wikidata-related projects that you like, that are useful for you or for the community. This project can be for example a community gathering or similar initiative, a tool or any other action that led to improving Wikidata’s data, the workflow of its editors or the outreach.

The nomination process is taking place publicly and collaboratively. A very simple way to contribute to the WikidataCon is to nominate a project, or to improve the description of existing nominated projects.

🗓️ Propose a session in the program

On the second and third day of the conference, the program will consist of several thematic tracks organized during several time slots, to accommodate various time zones. This program will be built directly by the participants of the conference and simultaneously reviewed by the organizers and curators, until October 21.

You can already see an overview of the tracks and the process to submit a session. We encourage you to think about what you could propose, to reach out to other community members to submit a session together - we particularly appreciate proposals issued by underrepresented groups and proposals that tackle diversity issues.

🎁 Prepare a birthday present

The end of October is also the opportunity to celebrate Wikidata’s 9th birthday! At this occasion, people from the community prepare presents (messages, tools, but also art… feel free to be creative!) , so you can start preparing something, preferably together with other members of your local group or WikiProject.

WikidataCon update - Sign up for the birthday presents lightning talks

🎁 The WikidataCon 2021 is starting on Wikidata’s ninth anniversary! As you may know, there’s a tradition of creating birthday presents and sharing them with the community. New tools, freshly started WikiProjects, but also art or meaningful discussions: you can prepare a present, with a team or on your own, and present it during the birthday presents lightning talks session. If you would like to book a slot, make sure to fill in this form before October 16th!

🏅 Speaking of cool projects, don’t forget that you can nominate your favorite community initiatives for the Wikidata Community Awards until October 10th. You can see the details of the collaborative nomination process and add or improve existing proposals.

🗓️ The program of the second and third days of the WikidataCon is still under construction: we encourage you to submit proposals as soon as possible - the first version of the dynamic schedule will be released on October 12th. You can have a look at the thematic tracks and submit proposals.

WikidataCon update - one week left to contribute to the community program

Hello all,

As you may know, the WikidataCon 2021 will take place online on October 29-31, and its program is built in two parts:

• on Day 1, the main track, that will deliver plenty of curated presentations and keynotes from diverse and interesting speakers, available to everyone in livestream ;
• on Day 2 and 3, the community tracks, ten thematic tracks that will allow the registered participants to dive deeper into multiple topics, share knowledge, present the latest updates of their projects, run discussions and workshops related to sustainability, GLAM, education and science, Wikibase, and plenty of other topics.

The call for proposals for the community program is still running and will be open until October 20th midnight. However, as we are building a dynamic schedule, we can already present you the first beta version of the schedule.

This schedule is presenting the sessions that have already been submitted and accepted by the community curators, and confirmed by the speakers. The exact times and duration of the sessions may still evolve until the week of the conference, depending on the new submissions we receive.

If you would like to contribute to the community program, if you have ideas or suggestions, don’t hesitate to submit sessions as soon as possible and before October 20th, to make sure that we can include them in the program!

We will keep releasing beta versions of the schedule and its content will still be very flexible until October 26th.

WikidataCon starts this Friday: check out the program and register for the conference!

We’re glad to announce that WikidataCon’s program is out! 🎉

This year, WikidataCon is organized by Wikimedia Deutschland and Wiki Movimento Brasil with “a sustainable future for Wikidata” as the main theme and is taking place online on October 29-31.

For this Friday (starting at 12:00 UTC), you can expect a program curated by the organization team of the WikidataCon 2021 including discussions around decolonizing Wikidata and knowledge justice, Igbo and Abstract Wikipedia, GLAMs in Brazil, what happened around Wikidata and Wikibase, and more. We’ll also have a social space, the ceremony of the WikidataCon Community Awards and the Latin America and Caribbean scholars gathering.

And for the weekend (running through October 30 and 31 to accommodate various time zones), we’ll have a program built by the community in the following tracks:

We would like to ask you 10-15 minutes of your time to fill out the participants survey (also available in Portuguese, Spanish and French). The results of this survey will be incredibly helpful for us to understand how you experienced this event, what could be improved for future editions, and what you took away from the conference. The survey is running for two weeks, and is anonymous.

Note: if you were not able to attend the event, or not as much as you wanted, the survey is also for you! Your feedback is valuable, as we would like to understand what factors prevented you to attend in good conditions.

As Wikimedians, we like to collect and archive information about our event. On the documentation page, you can find links to blog posts and articles about the event (feel free to add yours!), the Commons category of the event, and a full list of all sessions with links to notes and recordings if any.

The recording of the presentations of Day 1 is available on Youtube. The recordings of the sessions of Day 2 & 3 will eventually be uploaded on Youtube and Commons - please be aware that it may take a few weeks before this task is completed, as we have around 80 hours of video content to process.

Hello there, thanks for your question!

The video of Day 1 is available here: you can access the different parts using the timecodes in the description. At some point, we will also upload the separate videos.

We are currently processing the ~120 videos of Day 2&3. We are editing them in order to make them ready to be published on Youtube and Commons. As we have a lot of content, this will take some time: we are hoping to start uploading videos on Youtube in January 2022. Once the videos are published, we will need help to add the links on the overview page. We thank you for your patience.

If some of you have special wishes, or videos that we should upload first, let us know here, and we will try to put them at the top of our priority list :)

We are also working on providing English subtitles for some videos (probably not all of them), so same as above, if you think some videos have the priority to get subtitles, please let us know below.

Thanks a lot @Rdrg109: for offering your help. Currently, there's not much to do from your side, as we're working on providing English subtitles to a selection and videos, and uploading everything on Youtube. Once this step is done, we will definitely need help to transfer the same videos on Commons (I believe there's a tool for that but I didn't check recently if it works) and to add all the links to this page. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) Ok! I'd be glad to help in those tasks. Also, I was thinking that another way of helping, for the time being, would be to add structured data to each talk that is available at Commons (the ones from WikidataCon 2017) and then do the same with the ones from this year when they get to be uploaded. I've created a topic regarding this in the Project Chat. I would appreciate it if you could check it out.

Thanks for starting this discussion. I didn't intervene, as it is not my role to discuss notability criteria on Wikidata, but personally I don't think having one item per session of the conference is relevant. Documentation of the event

Hello all,

If you are interested in learning more about how we organized the WikidataCon 2021, the formats, tools and methods we used for the online conference, and the lessons we learned from this experience, the event organizers published a documentation page available on Meta.

We also published the results of the participants survey, where you can discover some interesting statistics about the conference participants, and the highlights of feedback sent by the respondents.

Finally, we are in the process of uploading the video recordings of Day 2 & 3 sessions on Youtube ; you can find the links on this list, and also sorted by tracks in these playlists. We will provide English subtitles on a selection of videos, that will be published later in January. If you're interested in helping us in this documentation effort, for example by transferring the videos on Commons or providing subtitles and translations, feel free to coordinate on the section above.
