Doggy style

Doggy style is a sex position. This name refers to the initial position assumed by dogs when mating (see canine copulation). It is also known as kitty style, retrocopulation, or simply rear entry, or by its Latin name, coitus more ferarum ("sex after the custom of beasts").

This position has been used since antiquity. It is described in the Kama Sutra as "the congress of a cow" and is listed in The Perfumed Garden.[1][2]

In this position, the receiving partner crouches on all fours with the legs slightly spread, while the penetrating partner penetrates the receiver vaginally or anally from behind.

Benefits and drawbacks

Ancient Roman oil lamp

For the penetrating partner, the position offers an unobstructed view of the partner's body from the rear, as well as leaving the hands and arms free. Having the arms and hands free allows the penetrating partner to stimulate the buttocks, genitals, nipples, or anus of the receiving partner.[3] For some women, receiving in this position provides the best stimulation of the G-spot. For a penetrating partner, this allows for different sensations during sex as compared with other positions. For example, a penetrating male's testicles may brush against the receiver's thighs or in some cases slap against her clitoris. A penetrating female may be better able to grind her clitoris against the inside of her dildo's harness.

One drawback of this position for some is the difficulty of either maintaining direct eye contact or kissing. Significant differences in the leg length of the two participants may make it difficult to align the genitalia. Also, some receivers may experience pain due to the depth or angle of penetration. Despite it being a deeply penetrating position, some people find that the phallus slips out.

Some partners may encounter vaginal flatulence when practising this position.

Variants

A variant of the doggy style position is for the receiving partner to be on all fours with their head and torso lower than their hips. One disadvantage of this variant is it can cause strain on the receiving partner's back. This could also lead to unintended misplacement of the phallus into the anal cavity
