How does one add a Wikipedia entry for, say, a new book series or its fictional characters? 92.25.136.63 (talk) 01:59, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Does the book/series meet these guidelines for inclusion? Zanahary (talk) 02:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Fictional characters are notable only when reliable, published sources that are entirely independent of the book, the author and the publisher devote significant attention to the fictional character. Not passing mentions, but delving deeply. Cullen328 (talk) 04:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
I need help from a Wikitable wizard
Hello!
I'm working on Sikidy and want to copy a table from a source. The table has some complicated headers, with some nesting. Would anyone be willing to help me out with them? I can't seem to figure out how to do them. Below are the header rows alone (which in the wikitable I would want to all be shaded dark, as headers are)
Thank you very much! Zanahary (talk) 02:15, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- With visual editing, you'll need to have a 3×5 header, and select the cells to be merged to form the long cells. As for shading, switch to source editing and change "|" of each cell to "!". You can copy the following table:

Paragraph rendering in VisualEditor as a single template block
The first paragraph of Kangina, when opened in Visual Editor, renders as a single template block. Why is this? Is there a fix? Thanks! Zanahary (talk) 02:53, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

What should this article's title be?
Hi there, I want to write an article about Komatsu's surface mining excavators, however, am unsure what to name the article title. The model series starts from PC2000 and goes to PC8000. Why can't I name it Komatsu PC-series excavators? Because all of their other models use the PC prefix, except for their surface mining excavators all models are numbers in the thousands. Any suggestions? Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 05:58, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- @X750: Komatsu just calls them "Surface mining excavators" at https://www.komatsu.com/en/products/excavators/surface-mining-excavators/. "Komatsu surface mining excavators" has no Google hits but I cannot think of a better name when they have many other excavators with PC numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter I was thinking of doing something similar to how nVidia has their GeForce 10 series, because whilst you're right that Komatsu surface mining excavators is a unique term, I'm not entirely comfortable with it being a non-specific term (other companies such as Caterpillar offer surface excavators too), I was thinking something along the lines of "Komatsu PC-xxxx series", with something better in place of the "xxxx" placeholder in the title. Do you kind of understand what I'm getting at? All else fails, I can just fall back on your suggestion. Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 10:41, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- @X750: I don't think "Komatsu surface mining excavators" implies that only Komatsu makes surface mining excavators. I think a PC name for the series should only be used if Komatsu or reliable sources use it. Is it even described as a "series" by anyone? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter I'm not sure, I am now more leaning towards your suggestion. Thanks for the input. Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 07:52, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

How to upload a photo while editing
I was editing a page related to the Kanker State. I have the ohoto of the last ruler of the state and want to upload it. I am his grandson and it is a family photo owned by me. I am not being able to upload the photo. Please guide/assist. Adityakanker (talk) 06:49, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- See WP:UPIMAGE. The main issue is copyright, because unless you took the photo yourself or had permission from the person who did, it might not be suitable, although it could have a fair use rationale.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:04, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- If you have evidence that the photo was taken before 1929, then it's no longer protected by copyright, and you can upload it to Commons. You'll need to convince them of its date.
- If after 1929, then you'll need permission from the current copyright-holder to upload it to Commons. I presume you don't know who that is, so you won't be able to upload it there. But you may be able upload a "fair-use" reduced-resolution version of it here on Englisj-language Wikipedia. Maproom (talk) 11:38, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

Creating Wikidata from Wikipedia
G'day to all. Is there a way to create a new Wikidata item from a Wikipedia, without going to Wikidata site and "manually" creating a new corresponding item that could then be connected to a newly created wikipedia article ? Thx in advance. ౪ Santa ౪99° 15:34, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Santasa99, You could try Wikipedia:WE-Framework. Also a bot will probably create an item for a new article eventually. I don't create many items, so manual input works fine for me. TSventon (talk) 17:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

Using the Wayback Machine for references
Hello, I haven't created any articles for some time and on my return I had to realise that you've made a major change in regards to what references have to look like. When I checked out if a website I wanted to use as reference was archived, I received the answer I had just archived it myself. But I didn't get that long number that you demand here as part of the archived link. Where is that number? Where do I get it? Do I need to register with the Internet Archive? Please answer to my talk page NordhornerII, thank you. NordhornerII (talk) 22:46, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Not a complete, or completely apposite, answer, but note that no references have to include a link at all. Links are a bonus convenience for readers, but offline references are perfectly acceptable (a great deal of information has never been put online) so traditional bibliographic (or analagous) details are sufficient.
- If the information you want to reference is on a website, (a) is that website a Reliable source, and (b) where did the website get it? The answer to (b) may be a preferable source (if Reliable). A website that is the true original source of information may be Primary, which is also less desirable. Hope this helps. {The poster formelry known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.67.173 (talk) 14:03, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

- I was on page for “The Paris Murders” tv program, redirected to the French name of the show. At the top of that page was a banner for a contest running by Wikipedia during the month of May. - @R.FrancesFyfe: First off, kindly refrain from using all caps as it can be seen as shouting and rude. Second of all, you shouldn't be directly editing an article about a subject with whom you have a conflict of interest. Please disclose that somewhere, preferably on your user page. The tittle of the "Monolayer-protected cluster molecules" page
Hello. I was advised to ask the matter here in general section. The tittle of the page was changed during the acceptance of the article. We think that the current tittle is not informative. The tittle seems to overlap with already existing tittles such as "Nanocluster" and "Thiolate-protected gold cluster". Furthermore, it is currently ambiguous and not totally aligned with the content. Is it possible to change the tittle to be more informative? We would suggest it to be "The crystal structures of monolayer-protected clusters" or something similar, because the crystal structures are the main focus of the page. Iridium27 (talk) 06:46, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Iridium27 Technically, pages are retitled by making a WP:MOVE but in this case it does seem worth having a discussion first and the logical place for that is on the Talk Page at the current title, using the process outlined for potentially controversial moves. My suggestion would be to call this a list article, since the text says
This article is designed to be a list of known structures of MPCs
and most of the content is indeed list-like. We certainly would not give it a title with the first word "The": see WP:DEFINITE. The relevant Project to alert to your discussion is Chemistry, at WT:CHEM. See WP:CANVASS for how to do that. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:29, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Silence on template clarification proposal
On May 11, I proposed a change to a label used by the Infobox_musical_artist template, in order to reduce ambiguity and confusion. (Origin => Launch location, with some alternate proposals) No discussion started, so a week later I invited discussion from the WikiProject:Infoboxes talk page. Another nine days have passed, still without discussion.
I'd be fine with a consensus against this change, indicating I was mistaken regarding its overall benefit. But total lack of discussion seems unfortunate, given how any reduction in confusion over a widely used template would provide a great benefit. Could one or more people here take a look, or point to a potentially interested community that should be invited to discuss? Thanks.

Consensus first
The Sapsby user has been writing for several weeks that the cappuccino was born in Austria. Almost all sources claim that the cappuccino originated in Italy; according to this source,[1], "Although the name 'Kapuziner' was used in Vienna, the actual cappuccino was invented in Italy, and the name was adapted to become 'Cappuccino.' It was first made in the early 1900a, shortly after the popularization of the espresso machine in 1901. The first record of the cappuccino we have found was in the 1930s.", cappuccino originated in Italy. I don't know what to do anymore; I wrote to him to first reach a consensus on the discussion page, but he continues undaunted. I'm not the only one who advised him to discuss first on the discussion page (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cappuccino&diff=prev&oldid=1223987338). I would also like to talk about Eduadoros; on the bagna càuda page there are many open discussions about the origin, but this user decided to add his information without first reaching a consensus on the discussion page. - @Andrewcliftonpayne Welcome to the help desk. I should warn you that creating an acceptable article is very difficult, but you first need to read Help:Your first article. Shantavira|feed me 12:52, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Andrewcliftonpayne. To add to what Shantaviraj has said: in my experience, editors who try to create an article before they have spent (at least) several weeks learning how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles, generally have a frustrating and miserable experience.
- Once you have understood core principles like verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable sources, and notability, then is the time when you can read YFA and try it: or not. Creating articles is not the only, or necessarily the best, way to help improve Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 15:28, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Is it prefect to Draft to Public or Not. I think enough sources for a movie. Rinuverse (talk) 14:25, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Rinuverse The Times of India is generally regarded as an unreliable source for entertainment-related articles. @Hardikgogoi I don't think this was quite ready for Mainspace, so how come you re-created it out of the Draft into Main? Qcne (talk) 14:37, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- which is reliable source for entertainment? Rinuverse (talk) 14:39, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- There are many; it's easier to specify which are not on a case-by-case basis: see WP:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Deprecated sources. A specific publication may be reliable for some matters and unreliable for others, and often the matter hinges on precisely what fact one is trying to verify. There is no simple answer. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.1095} 94.2.67.173 (talk) 00:19, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- which is reliable source for entertainment? Rinuverse (talk) 14:39, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Rinuverse: In addition to what's been posted above, you uploaded as c:File:Hoy Maharaja.jpg to Wikimedia Commons as your "own work". What is your basis for making such a claim? Are you somehow associated with the Cinépolis, the company that distributed the film? Only the orginal copyright holder of the poster can claim it to be their "own work" as explained in c:COM:Own work. If you're not the original copyright holder, you can't upload the file to Commons without copyright holder consent. If you weren't aware of any of this and just made a mistake, then that's OK; the file, however, can't be kept by Commons. If you just made a mistake, you should go to the file's page on Commons, click on "Edit" at the top of the page, add the syntax
{{SD|G7}]
to the top of the editing window, click on "Show preview" and then click on "Publish changes" if everything looks OK. This will tag the file for speedy deletion per c:COM:CSD#G7. If you don't do this or wait too long to do this, the file will most likely be tagged as a copyright violation by someone else and deleted from Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Jimmy Wales
Jimmy Wales was born on August 7, 1966 or on August 8, 1966? The source reported in the page about him https://www.oregonlive.com/siliconforest/2007/07/on_wikipedia_and_its_founders.html says that ""I am 40," Wales replied, adding that the date cited for his birthday on his Wikipedia biography -- Aug. 7, 1966 -- is incorrect". The date of his birth is uncertain. Can you provide some sources on this matter? 2A02:B025:F03:FFA1:1668:F38B:5C4F:DF93 (talk) 18:59, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Talk:Jimmy Wales is the proper place to discuss this. You can also ask him directly at User talk: Jimbo Wales. Cullen328 (talk) 19:17, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Cullen328 Many thanks for your answer. I ask him this question. 2A02:B025:F03:FFA1:1668:F38B:5C4F:DF93 (talk) 19:21, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Cullen328 but only autoconfirmed users can edit the page. I can't ask him this question. 2A02:B025:F03:FFA1:1668:F38B:5C4F:DF93 (talk) 19:28, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Try Talk:Jimmy Wales then. Or register an account, make ten edits in four days, and then you can ask directly. Cullen328 (talk) 19:37, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Be aware also that it is entirely possible for Mr Wales to have been born on 8 August UTC (aka Greenwich Mean Time), which this global encyclopedia often uses by default, but 7 August local (Huntsville, Alabama) time, which lags UTC by 6 hours.
- The Wikipedia article about him specifically mentions the 7/8th discrepancy in its Section 1: if there were any definitive Reliable source to settle the matter, it would have been used by now. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.2.67.173 (talk) 00:32, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Kirkheaton, Northumberland
I would like to suggest that the information about the Manor House in Kirkheaton should also refer to the following internet search result. Kirkheaton Manor House (The Gatehouse Record) (gatehouse-gazetteer.info)-see below. This would suggest that the Manor house is NOT a Pele Tower but a Bastle. https://gatehouse-gazetteer.info/English%20sites/2450.html Would it be possible for someone more capable than myself to amend the information please ? GardeningDave (talk) 19:24, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse. Please raise this question on Talk:Kirkheaton, Northumberland. It is not clear to me whether Gatehouse Gazeteer is what Wikipedia would count as a reliable source - is there editorial control over it, and if so, who by? You can ask for people's judgement on the matter at WP:RSN. ColinFine (talk) 21:07, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @GardeningDave: If you bring this up on Kirkheaton's talk page, you might mention that Grade II* listed buildings in Northumberland characterizes the building as a bastle house. Deor (talk) 23:05, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Editing Deleted
Hello, I was editing The Try Guys page as they recently announced a new cast. I was editing the "Cast" section to include the new cast members with brief bios of each. All of my work was deleted as "not constructive" even though I was pulling the information for the bios from The Try Guys website and other legitimate sources. I was also providing links and citations as I went. I am not sure how this could have been viewed as "not constructive" Citsymtserof (talk) 20:52, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Citsymtserof. Disagreements between editors are a normal part of collaboration in Wikipedia: if you want to pursue this, your recommended course of action is to open a discussion with the editor who reverted you on the article's talk page Talk:The Try Guys. (Make sure you ping the editor, so that they know you've raised the issue). See WP:BRD for how this works.
- My guess is that the other editor thought that you were putting too much detail in - we don't normally put extended bios of people in an article about something they were involved in. I may be wrong though. ColinFine (talk) 21:17, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Founding of the Volkswagen company
I try to post 1 interesting fact or ideal or something Dailey most of the public doesn't know. Today I tried about Volkswagen and FB wouldn't let me. Said content owned by someone else. Why? Don't usually have trouble. " IJamie Sheryl (talk) 20:58, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- @IJamie Sheryl: This is the encyclopedia Wikipedia and the above is the only edit by your account. The article Volkswagen hasn't been edited in a week. If you refer to a Wikipedia page then please link it. If FB means Facebook and you refer to Facebook page then we are not affiliated with them. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:19, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- Are you talking about Wikipedia, or about Facebook? If Wikipedia, please clarify which article you tried to edit, and what account you were using (this account has only this edit).
- If you are not talking about Wikipedia, then we can't help: this is the help desk for Wikipedia, not for anything else. ColinFine (talk) 21:20, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

LaTex not rendering when using MS-Edge. Local or global?
I've noticed this happens in MSEdge on and off, and there does not appear to be a pattern or obvious (to me anyway) reason. For example, on the page
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativistic_particle
equation (1) appears as
$ E^{2}=(p{\textrm {c}})^{2}+\left(m_{0}{\textrm {c}}^{2}\right)^{2}\, $
I tried different "tricks" in the editor, but nothing appears to work. Chrome and Firefox do not have this problem (this is probably also true for other html readers, but have not checked.
I would like to know if anyone else experiences this, or is it some problem I have locally? thanks Joe wiki eds (talk) 00:16, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Joe wiki eds: It renders without problems for me using legacy vector skin and Edge browser on Windows 10. RudolfRed (talk) 01:25, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- It works for me. Is SVG selected under "Math" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? PrimeHunter (talk) 02:11, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

How can I stop my personal information from being sold on the dark web
leaked data Retodo471 (talk) 03:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Retodo471, this help desk is for questions about using or editing Wikipedia, and isn't a general Q&A board. Are you referring to a Wikipedia account? If so, could you provide the name of the account? If this is not about Wikipedia, you would likely be better helped by searching the internet or asking these questions on a website designed for Q&A. Tollens (talk) 03:40, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Retodo471, I read here that you are: a developer product testing and feedback marketing research working with area 51 and fortknox [sic] top secret navel [sic] base and the CIA and FBI and local law enforcement along with my advertising ID. With that level and variety of expertise, and those security clearances, I'm confident that you'll be able to retrieve your accounts yourself. -- Hoary (talk) 07:02, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Edit Dutch pages
Hi, I have an account on en.wiki.. and am trying to turn it into a global account so I can edit nl.wiki.. pages because I am a native Dutch speaker and writer. It does not seem to work.. what should I do in.order to be able to edit nl.wiki pages?
Thanks, Koen Kmlinders (talk) 09:47, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- According to a comment here, you may need to disable any browser option which says "Block third party cookies". Another suggestion I have seen is to explicitly log out (that is a link which, for me, appears at the top, right of any page). Then log in again. If that doesn't help and there is no better advice here, ask again at WP:VPT. Johnuniq (talk) 10:05, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Referring to a young person who's the subject of an article ...
I'm editing an article on the young soon-to-be-canonized saint Carlo Acutis. He was only a teenager when he died. Throughout the article, he is referred to as Acutis. Somehow it seems to me that because of his youth, it would be more natural to refer to him as Carlo instead and I'd like to make that change article-wide.
What guidance is there on this sort of thing in Wikipedia? Augnablik (talk) 10:59, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Augnablik the manual of style guidance is at MOS:SURNAME. TSventon (talk) 11:17, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, @TSventon, for such a quick resolution! Apparently even children are referred to by surname unless members of the same family are also involved in the same discussion. I wouldn't have expected that. Augnablik (talk) 11:26, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Augnablik if you are interested in the reasons for the current guidance you could search for "children" in the talk page archives. The issue was discussed here in 2017. TSventon (talk) 11:35, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Put in more information in the "Paul Wesley" article under personal life
Hello,
I would like for your editors to put in this information in the personal life section with Paul Wesley:
"Wesley has been in a relationship with the Brazilian/German model Natalie Kuckenburg since 2023, February."
//Lazar B SaintHeihachi (talk) 11:02, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- @SaintHeihachi: Do you have a reliable source for that? That is also something you should be putting at Talk:Paul Wesley. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 12:26, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
have editor proofread and approve edits
Hello. I have been editing information for Gerard Karam. I have made edits, such as changed Arts to Science, in Education. Also added more details in bio. They revert back to original. Received email to ask editor to approve edits. When editing, don't see how to do that. PALEGALSECGMK (talk) 13:31, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: Gerard Karam
- The edits were reverted because the additions were not supported by inline sources. Even if what you have added is true, we can't include it on Wikipedia unless other people (readers and editors) can verify the information with published sources. Reconrabbit 13:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Uploading new logo
Dear Wikipedia,
I am trying to upload another logo to the Armada Music Wikipedia page because it still has the old logo right now. They have changed their logo for a couple of years now, so I want to fix that. Now that I am trying to upload the logo Wikipedia says it's copyrighted. How am I able to upload the new logo to Wikipedia if I don't have the copyright, because now the information on the page is wrong? Madstew (talk) 13:49, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Logos are one of the cases when non-free images are frequently used in articles. Please see WP:LOGO for how to do it.
- Far more significant than the logo is the poor quality of the sourcing: I'm not sure that even one of the sources meets the triple requirement of being reliable, independent, and containing significant coverage of the subject. Without several such sources, the label will not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. ColinFine (talk) 14:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Noel Ashman bio removed
Hi - I am trying to get Noel Ashman's page "unsalted" - apparently it was removed/taken down, after some contributors had added false information to it. Would you please direct me to what I need to do to return his previous page that can be added back to wikipedia. Ashmanassistant (talk) 13:51, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- The biography wasn't deleted because of 'false information'. It has however been deleted, repeatedly, because evidence that Ashman meets our notability guideline has not been provided: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Noel Ashman, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Noel Ashman (2nd nomination) and Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Noel_Ashman_(3rd_nomination). Unsalting will require evidence that the guideline can if fact be met, through significant in-depth coverage in published reliable sources. I suggest you start by finding them, and linking them here. And please note that if you are indeed Ashman's assistant, you will be required to conform to the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guidelines. AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:03, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Nakba
good afternoon.
With relation to the'Nakba' how can someone call it Ethnic Cleansing when the Arab league attacked Israel? This is misinformation and should be changed for legal reasons to prevent more racial hatred. We need to state facts correctly. 1 million jews ethnically cleansed from Morocco to Iran is a correct statement, The Christian population of Lebanon being massacred is ethnic cleansing, 1 million Greeks displaced from Turkey in 1923 is ethnic cleansing.
