Welcome to my talk page. I will usually reply on this page only.

I wasn't publicizing anything. I made references to non-profit animal charities. If you think I'm making any money from this, you're very mistaken.

Hi G. For the Bel Pamela, I don't immediately know anything about her, but I might be able to did something up from my library, especially since she came under air attack. And sorry for not fixing the Norwegian WP iw link to Stormoen, I just as a rule never do anything over at Norwegian WP. Manxruler (talk) 16:59, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good, since we need you over here :) Geschichte (talk) 17:01, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I suspect I'd get a peptic ulcer over at NWP. Anyways, having the month is good enough. I seem to recall reading about some air attacks in the Sandefjord area that month. The second attack you mention, did that also happen in April? Manxruler (talk) 17:49, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, well. At least we know it was in the Kristiansand area, and in 1945. That should do just fine. I'll look into it today. Manxruler (talk) 05:44, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Results. The attack was on Framnæs Mekaniske Værksted on 2 April 1945. The 3,165 ton Belpamela (that's the way the name is spelled in my sources) was hit repeatedly when the shipyard and surrounding areas came under attack from rocket-firing Mosquitoes. I shall look for more info, and add the relevant bits. Also found some web sources. Plenty of info, although the web doesn't say anything about the air attacks or sabotage. She was a Norwegian ship, btw. Manxruler (talk) 07:26, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Norwegian, yes, but stolen/confiscated by Germany I reckon? Geschichte (talk) 08:12, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in the manner that she sailed with for the Germans, yes. She did however retain her Norwegian crew. Of course, this was the case with much of the Norwegian Home Fleet. Manxruler (talk) 11:24, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and I couldn't find anything on a Kristiansand attack involving Belpamela in 1945. Manxruler (talk) 11:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would make sense. I'll look into it once I get from my vacation in 8 days time or so. Got access to some book on the merchant navy. Btw, once I get ample time, I intend to write an article on the Home Fleet. We've got one on Nortraship, there's an absolute need for one on the Home Fleet as well. WikiProject banners

[edit]

I have just reinstated the {{WikiProject Ireland}} banner which you removed from Talk:Joseph Ndo, with an edit summary which said only "reassess" and gave no indication of the removal. Please don't remove a wikiproject banner without explaining why you have done so. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:06, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ivar Mathisen

[edit]

Hi Geschichte. Unfortunately, it is true. His date of death is listed in the Olympedia database, which is only accessible to members, and should be available to everyone in a month or so when this site updates its information based on the database. So I suppose the reversion can stay for now if the members-only site falls WP:OR, but eventually the source will be located here. Cheers, CP 16:48, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you provide a source there we could always replace it with Sports-Reference later. But "per no Wikipedia" was not solid enough. Geschichte (talk) 13:09, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sports Reference now has his date of death on their website. Does that work? Cheers, CP 06:47, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re

[edit]

Thank you! Skäpperöd (talk) 05:33, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I see you've added a {{globalize}} template to this article. Although it's already been removed, I just wanted to note that the article is explicitly about an American event, which is clear after just a bit of investigation. Could you please be a bit more careful when tagging articles? Best regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 22:24, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hej. Der er ikke behov for globaliseringen. Begivenheden var nyhedsinteresse på grund af dens effekt i USA alene. Mike H. Fierce! 22:25, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bull-Hansen

[edit]

Hey, you removed an external link I added to the Bull-Hansen article [1]. I added that link because the page has an image, and there is no image of him at commons / in the article. I thus regard the link valuable for the article. Best Skäpperöd (talk) 08:04, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, the image is ok. But the text in the link is not good. It just copies (the four-volume work) Våre falne ("Unsere Gefallene"), but in an undetailed and confusing way. For instance there is no such place as "Var Frelsers Memorial". Also, the reader might think that the link is an authoritative source for his departure to Sweden, when literature in fact gives two different dates. Geschichte (talk) 08:16, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then it is probably better to not have the link, seems like I didn't read close enough - I was just looking for an image. And for (c) reasons, I didn't dare to extract the image to commons and linked the site instead. Regards Skäpperöd (talk) 08:57, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that images from Våre falne are indeed permissible for upload - see for instance File:Odd_Kjell_Starheim.jpg. Geschichte (talk) 22:39, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Norsk krigsleksikon moved

[edit]

Hey G. Just thought I'd mention that Norsk krigsleksikon 1940-45 has moved it's url, just in case you hadn't been told yet. instead of www.norgeslexi.com, it's now mediabase1.uib.no. The main page is now here. I've fixed a number of the references to the encyclopaedia, but I huess we've got hundreds of articles that cite NKL... The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!

[edit]

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Signature of Amaldus Nielsen

[edit]

Hei Geschichte, I uploaded a picture of the signature of Amaldus Nielsen here. Unfortunately I can't add it in the infobox of the article because Template:Infobox artist doesn't have a signature parameter. So I started a discussion here. Your comment would be useful.--MaximilianT (talk) 18:21, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not convinced of the encyclopedic value of the signature. Geschichte (talk) 23:32, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thorleif Karlsen's father

[edit]

Hey G. Just read the Thorleif Karlsen article and was left wondering: Who was Thorleif Karlsen's father? As an NS co-founder he deserves an article at some point. Manxruler (talk) 14:46, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was Politioverbetjent Karl Oscar Karlsen (1882–1958), according to this. I didn't know that TK had an NBL entry, but I thought I'd add from it later. Geschichte (talk) 19:40, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Manxruler (talk) 20:16, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't find anything about KOK on Atekst. Geschichte (talk) 23:32, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on expanding the article! All the best for 2010. Lugnuts (talk) 14:39, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't even know the article was new. I just came across it because Jacob Neumann edited a magazine called Urda. Cool, huh. Geschichte (talk) 14:41, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey G. Happy New Year. Can't recall reading about Norman Lind, but he might be in my book collection somewhere, interesting chap. Will look into it as soon as I have sufficient time. Maybe tomorrow. Manxruler (talk) 20:31, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

re:"Gulosten"

[edit]

Perhaps. That would be very nice. Going for DYK first, then sure, why not try for GAN. Been fascinated by Andersen's story for years, about time I started work on his article. Manxruler (talk) 21:08, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's probably an idea. Should work on the lead, would appreciate some help with that. With regards to bibliography, I'm not sure what else there is to list. A native English speaker should definitely do a copy-edit, I always find that very positive for articles. I've looked around for an image, thus far found none. Thanks again for the good help. Manxruler (talk) 00:54, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, could you check Dagbladet in 1955, c. August-September for Andersen's conviction for selling denatured alcohol (Norwegian: denaturert sprit)? He was sentenced to 36 days in prison by Oslo forhørsrett. Manxruler (talk) 07:23, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I believe that would be permissible, seeing as the subject has been dead for almost 30 years and no free versions are likely to be available. If you could take care of that, then that would be excellent. Manxruler (talk) 09:06, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course you can. I'll get on that as soon as I can, just need to get that e-mail up and running first. I would personally prefer a 1940s image, as that was the time the most dramatic things in his life occurred. Manxruler (talk) 16:26, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Still working on getting that email enabled, is experiencing some difficulties, will look at it again tomorrow. Cheers. Manxruler (talk) 20:41, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
E-mail now functional. Manxruler (talk) 08:35, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the newspaper articles. I'm sure they will prove useful. How do we go about extracting an image of "Gulosten" from one of the articles available? Manxruler (talk) 06:26, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. I was thinking about doing that. Although I'm sort of on the verge of wiki-breaking for a long while. Have got real life work to get done before the summer. I suppose that it wouldn't be proper to be absent after nominating an article for GA. Kinda of unsure what to do, really. Manxruler (talk) 09:21, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that would be awfully kind. I also suppose that I might be able to keep an eye out on the nom and then come back temporarily once it's reviewed, depending on how well my studies are going at that point. I'm planning on having a week or two break from my studies in, say, April anyway. Ah, why not? I'll try and see if I can get it nominated today. Cheers. Manxruler (talk) 13:13, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi G. Nominated the article over at WP:GAC some hours ago and just declared the start of my Wikibreak. Thanks for keeping an eye out for the nom. I shall drop by fairly regularly to check on the progress of things, and try and help out when the reviewing starts, unless I'm actually having my exams at the moment in question. I think we've all done a pretty good job writing Gulosten's article. Manxruler (talk) 02:28, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment of Patrick Deneen

[edit]

Hi Geschichte, thanks for the assessment of the Patrick Deneen article I recently wrote. I was wondering if you could let me know what improvements could be made to bring the article from C-class to B-class. It seems to be close to the B criteria (in my admittedly biased opinion), so any brief suggestions you have would be much appreciated. Wine Guy Talk 20:17, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Geschichte! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 197 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 199 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

[edit]

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Move

[edit]

Hi. Any possibility of moving the current Lade Airport to Trondheim Airport, Lade (just delete the latter, it's fully redundant to the content at Lade Airport) and then making 'Lade Airport' a redirect. If there is some process or board where requests for this thing can be asked for, just let met know. Thanks, Arsenikk (talk) 12:40, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would think adding such airports is fine. For North America, every farm with an air field seems to have an article (see for instance Gang Ranch Airport and Category:British Columbia airport stubs. British Columbia has a population smaller than Norway, but has 212 airport stubs. As a rule of thumb, I think any airport with an ICAO airport code would be addable, but smaller aerodromes such as helipads might not. Arsenikk (talk) 14:21, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Nitro1.gif and File:Slayerscr.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:06, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I re-wrote both articles citing sources, and put the quotes in the footnotes. Bokmål Wikipedia had an important clue, that the border between counties was moved and the community divided at the time of the Peace of Roskilde, and that enabled me to find a source to document the splitting. Since the split predates the creation of formannskapsdistrikter, plus it was a rural area, I don't think there are going to be any sources referring to them as municipalities until they got combined as a herred in 1853. But if I've got anything wrong, please point it out; I also hope you can find hard-copy sources to bridge any reference gaps that you may still be able to see. That was a fun paper-chase, and I think I just added a bit to public knowledge as well as increasing my Norwegian knowledge! . . . And I went ahead and moved the articles to match how the sources unanimously write the 2 placenames, and changed the stub template for Sør-Bindalen to the correct county. Actually I am not sure they are stubs any more. Since the deletion discussion was closed as no-consensus while I was working on the rewrites, if you do have any concerns, let's continue here or on a talk-page. Yngvadottir (talk) 22:37, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems good now. Re: "any sources referring to them as municipalities until they got combined", I still hold my view regarding statistics hosted by University of Tromsø as well as the Statistics Norway paper. But let's not spend more time on that issue than necessary. Geschichte (talk) 22:39, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hiding

[edit]

I just saw your edit summary comment at Otto Sverdrup; the reason for hiding the references were that they were disorganized and ugly, and of unclear relevance. They can probably be visible again, but under a heading "Further reading". It's very unclear whether they were used as references. Geschichte (talk) 13:37, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • First: I appreciate your good additions to this article. I've been interested in Sverdrup's feats for some time. As for the "disorganized and ugly" references, that is a matter of opinion, and in my opinion I consider it added value. And yes, some of these were used as actual references (e.g. Gerald Kenny). Nevertheless, I would support your idea of a "Further reading" heading. -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 13:51, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Kidane Tad...eh? say what?

[edit]

I've explained what's going on with Kidane Tadese's name on the article. I don't think it's right to move the article yet because he is still overwhelmingly called the wrong name – whether that be Tadasse or Tadesse – unless they have different but similarly named fathers (which can't be ruled out all together!). I suppose one of the problems with less famous non-Western runners is that their names can be rendered in many different ways, making it hard for athletics fans like ourselves! Oh well... Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 14:42, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good work! I was thinking about using the Bishkek orphanage thing for a DYK myself but decided against because the source was in German and I didn't want to misrepresent things.

The thing with the {{AchievementTable}} idea was basically to provide a way of both standardising competition record sections while making things easier for novice users. I agree that most templates are complex and make life more difficult for the majority of users (I can't believe that some people actually proposed using templates on every single date in wikipedia just for that auto US/International date option!). However, when it comes to tables and wiki html then I find that the bare code can be often more confusing than a simple template (hence my extensive documentation/tutorial on the template page). I remember when I first started editing how I was confused by all the code and citation templates etc.

In my opinion, the sooner that wikipedia gets an easy-to-use interface the better. If citations could be expanded and contracted by clicking a numbered citation link in the edit window then I think people would find reading and editing Wikipedia ten times easier. What are your thoughts about such templates? Do you prefer the table code? I always try to cater for both readers and editors where possible. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 19:19, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, this user seems to come to similar conclusions about templates as I have in many respects. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 19:44, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I love citation templates, and some other templates. Tables, on the other hand, should often be avoided altogether. Geschichte (talk) 07:11, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On templates in general, I suppose that my opinion is that templates should only be used for (a) enabling novice users to do complex things in a simplified manner (infoboxes/ranked medal tallys/tables etc) or (b) navigational purposes. I can't really think of much outside of those two main ideas, besides rare exceptions like the transclusion of long tables (e.g. Olympic calendars). I guess that whether citation templates fall into the first category, or not, is a subjective matter.
I think tables can occasionally offer a quick summary when a full description would be a prohibitive option: the World Championships in Athletics medal tables are a good example, leading off into their own sub-articles. In fact, adding prose to results pages like this one is an ambitious target of mine! Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 16:11, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ships and Wikiprojects covering countries

[edit]

Re your tagging of SS Ragnhild (1941) with WP Norway - while not disagreeing with this tag, the ship also operated for the UK, Finland and Sweden, so it would seem logical to tag the article with the Wikiprojects covering those countries.

However, for some reason most ship articles do not get tagged with country Wikiprojects. I'm not sure why. The problem is that raising the issue with every country's WP and WP:SHIPS is going to generate more than a few square metres of text. Such a discussion would need to be in a centralised area, probably as a sub-page of WT:SHIPS. What do you think of the idea of raising such a discussion and notifying all countries WPs? Mjroots (talk) 07:34, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
