DirectX 12 Deletion Proposal

You mentioned that DirectX games are very common, which is true. However, DirectX 12 is a special and sensitive topic, because it only supports exactly one operating system, namely Windows 10. Mainly for this reason, but also because the documentation of the DirectX 12 interface does not excite developers very much, there are very few games opting for DirectX 12 compared to the whole market, even if they are being developed right now. DirectX 12 would solve a main issue - using multiple CPU cores for the graphical interface - but as it's not suitable for the mass market with all the Linux/Mac/Windows 7/8/8.1 Users, most developers opt for DirectX 11 even nowadays. You can google discussions on games like Planet Coaster and DirectX 12, and see that people are really upset about not using the latest tech, however the producers have good reason to dismiss DX12. Microsoft tried to position DirectX 12 as a good reason for gamers to switch to Windows 10. It seems that history will show that DirectX 12 as a closed standard will remain a footnote of a relatively tiny spot in the huge gaming market because of this business behaviour. There are some alternatives to DX12 as close-to-hardware interfaces, mainly AMD's Vulkan, but this fight is not over and there is definitely not a standard in sight. Nowadays computers still get faster, but the industry is working mainly on energy efficiency, raw GPU power and adding cores to the CPU. Still, the frequency-per-core does not grow at the moment (4GHz is the spot for several years now). Because of this, it is actually very interesting to see what hardware interface will make it's stance for games, especially those where a lot of small entities have to be rendered individually - because with normal DirectX (11) this is done by 1 thread only. Finally, there are also several gaming sites that list DirectX 12 games as they remain special, e.g. pcgameshardware.de, tomshardware.com Googling "List of DirectX 12 games" will also show you that this topic is very much of interest to techies. Conclusion: DirectX 12 is not DirectX. It really needs it own list of supported games, now and for documentation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NiksNx (talkcontribs)

Well, that is certainly some background I was not aware of, though I'm not sure how much of that would factor in to Wikipedia's guidelines for subjects having their own list like this. Feel free to share that in the deletion discussion if you like though. Sergecross73 msg me 12:44, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

I believe it displays differently based on what you're viewing Wikipedia on (computer, tablet, browser type, etc) so I'm not sure if I give directions it'll necessarily transfer into what you're seeing on your end. But clicking on this link right here should allow you to make and edit to the deletion discussion directly. And don't worry about deleting this, it'll be archived automatically in a few days. Thanks for creating The Lost Child (video game), Sergecross73!

Wikipedia editor Chris troutman just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

It would be helpful if we could avoid writing about media before the reviews are out. I have a hard time believing this is enough coverage to pass WP:GNG. I see that Metacritic is collecting reviews and I imagine there will be critical response to this game, but there isn't yet.

Chris troutman - I don't know what's worse - the fact that you're templating a regular who obviously knows the notability guidelines (and knows this passes it) or the fact that you're lecturing some who did nothing other than created a plausible redirect a year ago. I know there's probably a huge backlog of articles to review, but come on... Sergecross73 msg me 02:59, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
I responded to your message on my talk page about the redirect issue. Yes, I should have checked that out; that's my fault. It's my opinion that the subject is not yet notable. I would hope you wouldn't take my two cents delivered via the Page Curation toolbar as lecturing. Further, I template regulars. Please don't think yourself above receive a templated message. I'll be sure not leave a birthday message or seasonal greeting, as those are templates, too. Yes, there is a huge backlog. It becomes difficult to work on when I get such concerted pushback; I'd suggest you ought to rethink how you look at this venture. Chris Troutman (talk) 17:17, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
It's not that I feel I'm above it, it's just that it was wrong on so many levels. You lectured me about the notability standards of an article I didn't create. And while the person who did write the article didn't do a great job, it easily meets the WP:GNG. Websites considered reliable sources per WP:VG/S, have written countless dedicated articles about the game, like Gematsu, RPGsite, and Siliconera. And above all, you decided to delivery this lecture on the day of the game's release, where dedicated reviews are coming in. There's 4 separate reviews between here and here uploaded earlier yesterday. This game would easily survive an AFD, now or months back. So, I mean, I guess you're right about template part though. Its more about all the content included in the part you yourself wrote than the fact that you used a template. It was perfect storm of wrong person, failure-of-WP:BEFORE opinions, and bad timing. Sergecross73 msg me 18:23, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
I apologize about the timing. The message wasn't meant for you and I'm making an effort to check page history before using the page curation toolbar in that way. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:11, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
I apologize for getting so upset too. It's not that big of a deal. Sorry. Sergecross73 msg me 00:18, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Hey, Serge. I went ahead and redid my edit of the Sonic R article with your criticisms in mind. I wasn't aware that redirects were often preferred over piping, so I'll keep that in mind; thank you for informing me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTechnician27 (talkcontribs) 04:22, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

TheTechnician27 - Thank you for understanding. I do appreciate all the archiving and good fixes you did, so I'm glad they're re-implemented. FYI, I personally recommend splitting up making changes into multiple smaller edits, so that people don't undo all of your work when you make a variety of good and bad edits. (So like, in one edit, archive refs. In a second edit, change some links. In a third edit, reword a sentence. Etc.) But that's merely a personal stance, you're free to do it as you please. Thanks. Ghost Rats page

Hi there :)

The 'Rats' page has a number of issues and I'd welcome your thoughts on them -

1. The reference for the release information is poor. While metalinjection may be considered a credible source the article itself is dreadful, stating that "hopefully" the song would be on the Prequelle album. There must be a better source available?

2. "was performed by a separate set of anonymous band members than prior material, with all prior band members leaving the band in 2017 following a lawsuit with Forge regarding pay" This is incorrect. Of the Ghouls who quit in 2017, only two of them, possibly 3 had played on any Ghost album/EP and even then not all of the releases. In terms of the previous Ghost release (Popestar), I don't believe (off the top of my head) that any of them played on it. This is the central issue of the lawsuit - Forge claims that Ghost has always been him and session musicians as none of the former Ghouls in the lawsuit consistently was a part of the band. Line up changes have never been acknowledged in terms of the band's lore.

3. "Journalists noted that the video's style and dancing appeared to be influenced by Michael Jackson's music video for his song "Thriller".[3]" One journalist made that comment and while the video has a Thriller influence, is it relevant? I'm not trying to be petty but if the filming process and the director's identity (he's one of rock music's biggest director's) are inconsequential then isn't the opinion of one journalist? In the 'Reception' section it's understandable to have reactions from journalists but in the Background section it's neither a part of the background, nor relevant.

4. That Loudwire reference is equally awful as the journalist has the wrong date for the album release. There are better sources available.

5. The Personnel section is half in character and half not. The liner notes credit Cardinal Copia and a Group of Nameless Ghouls, but the Wikipedia page credits Tobias Forge as Cardinal Copia and a Group of Nameless Ghouls. If Forge is being credited then shouldn't the actual performers on the track be credited too?

6. There's no mention of the physical release formats.

Thanks

ConClaviConDio (talk) 14:20, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi ConClaviConDio. To address your comments:
 1. Metal Injection is considered a usable source. See WP:RSMUSIC. Do you have a particular concern with the way its actually used in the article? It's not used to source the fact that its on Prequelle. The things it is used for, like the 1980s and Ozzy influences, were pretty commonly found sentiments, so it doesn't strike me as controversial.
 2. Feel free to reword it as you see fit. The point I was trying to make was that the song was the first to be released by Tobias Forge and a new lineup. Regadless of the details of the lawsuit or the "band's lore", it is Forge and a new backing band, correct?
 3. If you'd prefer we switch it to the exact journalist, whoever wrote it at Loudwire, that's fine by me. But the observation was made by the source, and is valid content. It is also not reception. Reception features value judgements, based around quality. Saying it was good, bad mediocre, whatever. Simple observations, like calling it similar looking to Thriller, which is the current content used in the article, is fundamentally not reception.
 4. Loudwire is a usable source per WP:RSMUSIC. It is not being used to source the album's release date, it was being used to source the fact that it was the debut single from the album. If you'd like to provide a second source after it confirming the date of the album release, go for it, but that seems unnecessary considering the release date is sourced at the album article and relatively non-contentious.
 5. Feel free to add this if you like. I don't personally track down that sort of information in the song articles I create because of the general irrelevance of physic singles in the modern age, but I also don't remove it if someone else wants to dig it up with a source.
Also, you seem to allude to this edit of yours, which I removed. Personal Wordpress blogs are generally not considered reliable/usable sources on Wikipedia, so it was removed more on those grounds. As I noted in my edit summary, the director could be worth noting if you find a better source to verify it. Not sure it particularly matters that it was recorded in February though, nor do we really need a brand new section for one single sentence though. Sergecross73 msg me 14:49, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

1. If a website is on the RSMUSIC list then it can be used as an accepted source even if other information in the article is incorrect? I had presumed that a source having incorrect information in it would undermine its credibility. Thanks for the clarification.

2. No. Ghost's 'backing band' has been reasonably steady in terms of live tours until the all left in 2017. Since then the band has again been a core number of session musicians whilst others come and go depending on availability. The recording line up has never been one band and hasn't even been the same line up song by song on an album. Appendix 6 - Summary of Recordings of the documents filed in court, as you can see by Meliora, the album didn't have a consistent line up. I tried inking to it for you but Wikipedia seemed to think the link was spam. Ludvig Kennberg never played drums live for Ghost, he was used as a session drummer for some albums but not others for example. Kennberg also played on Prequelle. What I'm attempting to address here is that it's not like Ghost was a band like Metallica under masks and then everyone bar James Hetfield left, which is the assumption the fans seem to work under.

3. Noted.

4. Again this falls under the scope of question 1. I hadn't appreciated that a source can contain incorrect information provided it backs up the point in the article.

5. I note you didn't comment on this but if you do decide to update the relevant section then the liner notes from the album credit the musicians involved. Or leave it half as Ghost lore/half factual, whichever you prefer.

6. Fair enough, I wasn't sure on how comprehensive the page was intended to be. Ghost fans include a lot of vinyl collectors, of Prequelle's 67,000 sales on release day, 61,000 approximately were physical copies.

There's a Reception section which is two sentences about journalist's opinions, so I didn't see there as being an issue as to adding a new section with factual information albeit with one sentence. The video director is mentioned in the album sleeve. In regards to 'personal blogs', the blog referenced is a business blog, not a personal; one much like Metalinjection and other sites are hosted on Wordpress. The site has interviewed former Ghost members in the past and has numerous writers.

I've made my points here and leave it to you to incorporate them or not

ConClaviConDio (talk) 17:34, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

 1. Correct. Typos happen sometimes. It's not an issue if a source has a typo in content totally irrelevant to the content it's citing. It'd be one thing if Loudwire's typo was that Rats was the third single, and I was writing to make that assertion on Wikipedia. But that's not the case: There's nothing incorrect or remotely contentious in the Wikipedia sentence sourced by Loudwire, so there's no issue here.
 2. Again, the whole point of that content was to establish that it was that Rats was the first song from this particular lineup of musicians. It's not meant to imply anything about the band's membership, just that it was the first time Forge released music with this combination of musicians, and that no one on the song was were the musicians involved in the lawsuit. It doesn't say any of the things you seem to think it's saying.
 3. Resolved
 4. Resolved
 5. Sorry, I didn't mean to skip this. I missed it the first time around. If we know the real names of the musicians, then yes, they should be added. None of the sources I had read had mentioned anyone besides Forge, and I don't have the album to check the liner notes. I merely was restricted by what I did and did not know there.
 6. It should be easy enough to find a source for the director, a lot of the usable rock websites commonly make mention of it, and it can be integrated right into the Background section.
I think that covers everything. Sergecross73 msg me 18:43, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Redirects on games *Help*

I have a question. Do we have to overlap game titles like for example: Zen Pinball|Zen Pinball 3D? I want to be able to provide redirects for every game on there like what has been done on the Switch games. Could I request your help on the matter? Also there are many links which contain the original title, and I removed those, resulting in a redlink. Zacharyalejandro (talk) 16:04, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure I follow your question, but my thoughts on what I think you're talking about:
 • You don't need to write Zen Pinball 3D because writing Zen Pinball 3D works because someone already set up a redirect.
 • It's very easy to create a redirect for anything you want. For example, lets say I wanted to create a redirect that takes "Crazy Taxi PSP" to "Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars because it was a nickname and early title for the game. To create a redirect for "Crazy Taxi PSP", all I would need to do is:
 1. Type "Crazy Taxi PSP" into the "Search Wikipedia" bar. Doing so would take you to a page that looks like this.
 2. On that page, click on the red "Crazy Taxi PSP". It should take you to a page that looks like this.
 3. There, you would type #REDIRECT Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars - the article that already exists.
 4. Make the edit (select publish page"). There you are, the redirect would be made. After that point, if someone typed in "Crazy Taxi PSP", it would redirect the reader to the existing page of Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars.
 5. Basically apply that process to any article that exists and redirect title you want to create, and you can make a redirect.
Does that make sense? Are there things I'm not answering correctly? Sergecross73 msg me 16:54, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

So if I type in #REDIRECT on 100% Pascal Sensei: Kanpeki Paint Bombers, it would take me to 100% Pascal-sensei?Zacharyalejandro (talk) 18:52, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Close, I think. You're correct in using #REDIRECT, but then you need to tell it where to redirect. So if you went to 100% Pascal Sensei: Kanpeki Paint Bombers and typed #REDIRECT 100% Pascal-sensei, then you'd have it. Its always two parts. The command (redirect) and the location (where to redirect to). Sergecross73 msg me 19:01, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
I got it now. I did what you said. Now I'm going to go fix some redlinks and put in redirects. Thank you very much for your help! Zacharyalejandro (talk) 21:07, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.

Technical news

 • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.

 • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

Hello there! I hope this finds you doing well. I'm doing a GA review of The Marshall Mathers LP and had a quick question which I'm sure your expertise can answer: There is an entire section labeled "Songs" that literally dissects every song on the album. Is this normal? Necessary? I've never seen a section like this before. What I've normally come across are important details from a select few songs implemented into a "Lyrics" section, or something similar. I feel like this section is unnecessary and that crucial details should be woven into the "Music and lyrics" section right above it, but I wanted to pick your brain first and ask what you would suggest?

P.S. I noticed on your user page that you are getting back into the hard rock scene! Yay! Let me know if you need assistance with anything! — Miss Sarita 15:59, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Hey there! Good to hear from you again. I apologize, I've got limited availability this next 24 hours, but looking over it quickly, I'd agree with your concern. I'd recommend they trim back the "song details" a little bit (it's a but heavy on direct quotes and song lyrics excerpts for a GA anyways) and integrate it into the "Music and lyrics" section, which is already discussing the same sort of information anyways. Sergecross73 msg me 17:11, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Two separate editors have told you that your article is not ready to be publicly published, and for valid reasons. You need to discuss with them, and only recreated if there is WP:CONSENSUS to do so. Forcing your way through this is not a good way to return from repeated blocks... Sergecross73 msg me 13:00, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

French 1up

What made you say that the French 1up site isn't reliable? 2605:E000:2E54:8F0:B19A:95FC:1030:518C (talk) 15:08, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

 • It's got a very cheap, unprofessional look to its setup, making it look far more like "amateur fansite" than "professional publication".
 • I noticed that the writer and owner of the website are the same, which isn't particularly an issue, but rather, more of an indicator that this is just some person's personal website than a professional publication.
 • I see no evidence of their being a set staff, editorial oversight, editorial or website policy, etc, all things we like to see in Wikipedia reliable sources.
 • The source wasn't particularly well used in the article anyways. All it gave was a review score and stated that it was "more positively received than other more recent reviews", which didn't seem particularly true, considering that 1) the other 2 sources had no number score for comparison sake, they were just negative retrospectives and 2) the review wasn't particularly positive. I mean, Google Translate tells me the review concludes with " But now, there are serious flaws in the very concept of the game that spread the rest like a fall of dominoes, afflicting in turn the level design, confusing and repetitive, playability, awkward and rough, and game design, not enough thought.". That's...pretty scathing. Sergecross73 msg me 15:43, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Uncomfortable (song)

Pop metal is another word for glam metal. ~SMLTP 12:35, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Its generally best to WP:STICKTOSOURCE and use the term they use. No sources seem to be using the term "glam" to describe the song. A poppy metal song in 2018 conveys a different message to the reader than what "glam metal" generally does. Sergecross73 msg me 12:43, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

What we really need is an article on pop metal. Sooner or later, enough information is going to surface to make Wikipedia call it a thing. I already firmly believe it's a thing. dannymusiceditor oops 19:01, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

I agree, as there's plenty of poppy modern metal music these days that doesn't fall under what is generally considered "glam metal" (stuff like Halestorm.) Not sure if there's enough out there for a whole article, or just a section at a more general metal article, but either way, creating something like that isn't quite the project I have time or motivation for. SML, its something you could always try to take on if you feel you can write it while still sticking to what reliable sources say... Sergecross73 msg me 19:07, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the only thing reliable I found that takes on pop metal is a genre overview of it here. ~SMLTP 20:23, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, it may be one of those things where they use it more as a descriptor for metal than as an actual genre usually. I'm not sure. Perhaps Danny can find more on it. Sergecross73 msg me 20:24, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
It may also be that the name hasen’t catched on yet to the majority of people, if that happens, major soureces may start covering it, but unfortunately, it’ll probably take a few years for that. That also happens to genres such as blackened thrash metal. ~SMLTP 20:43, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Oversight

Hello Serge, could you please help my out on something, I’m not familiar with oversight, but 60.246.161.253 posted a extremely gross, inappropriate, vulgar, and just plain awful images in some pages, Shellwood reverted him, but I’m worried that he’ll do it again, I really don’t want to see that image again. And I strongly recommend you not to see it, really, just don’t. ~SMLTP 22:57, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

If you have any specific WP:DIFs you want me to WP:REVDEL, you can link them to me and I’ll look into it. I don’t have the ability to delete the images personally, but I can delete the versions in the page history so people have no means of seeing it on the English Wikipedia. Sergecross73 msg me 01:04, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
I’ll try, but there’s a lot of them that have spread through a lot of pages, from thrash metal to my talk page. And the person was only blocked for 31 hours. So he’ll most probably be doing it again, vandals don’t ever give up unfortunately. ~SMLTP 02:51, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Here’s the diff for the vandalism he did there. ~SMLTP 02:55, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
The first one and second one in my talk page. ~SMLTP 02:55, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
At least at your talk page and thrash metal, the images have been deleted, so there’s no more seeing whatever that was a picture of. Let me know if he comes back, and I can block him. You never know with vandals. Some obsess over things and waste years of their lives causing trouble. Others cause trouble for an hour and never appear again. At least this IP has no real purpose. He’s not trying to promote his favorite band or push his political viewpoints or something. He’s just adding stupid pictures. Sometimes people without any purpose lose interest faster. Sergecross73 msg me 03:02, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I hope he doesn’t come back, but if he does, the persons edits appear to be with atleast three different IP addresses, but always with the same image. Maybe there should be a user group that evaluates the appropriateness of an image... so things like this don’t happen again. I wish I wouldn’t have seen that, your lucky. Oh, the image doesn’t show LEGO blocks... though it would’ve been preferable. ~SMLTP 03:14, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
