Hi Slaporte,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

[edit]

Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I'm Claudi Balaguer, a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. I know that you are also trying to obtain a Californian Chapter and I sincerely hope that you will succeed and I think that all the members of our association feel likewise because denying it implies, in my opinion, going against the spreading of knowledge creating boundaries to creativity and collective voluntary work. So maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages, cultures and local or regional entities in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care! I wish I could visit your great, beautiful and sunny region once more soon! If you ever need my (probably "our" too) help you can count on me even though I'm currently really far away from California. Capsot (talk) 15:47, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your encouragement! If you need anything else, feel free to send me an email. It looks like we face some similar issues (such as overlap). In California, our group is still at a very preliminary phase of development. I would be interested to hear more details about your group's growth. Best of luck! Cheers, Stephen (talk) 18:15, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I hope you're doing fine. I just wanted to thank you (I thought I had done it but well I'm way too busy running around in so many wikipedias) and again wish all the best to your future Chapter. If you would like to have more information about our situation I was wisely advised to create some kind of diary on my userpage, and I'll try to keep it updated. If you'd like to share information about our association or to create some exchanges with us (I think it would be really interesting to all of us) you can contact our president [1], he'll be real glad to talk and exchange ideas, opinions or else with any of you. Take care, best regards to you and all the members of Wikimedia California! Capsot (talk) 07:28, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikisource : Supreme Court Project

[edit]

Thank you for the new ideas and help on the Supreme Court project over at WS, a daunting task. User George Orwell mentioned in the discussion thread you had a bot that would upload the US Reports of all the cases. I am just wondering how it is going with that? It would save a ton of manual labor. Also would we have to individually add the cases to the front of the WS Supreme Court page? Also I feel that it is important to cross-link the cases not just the volumes in the US Reports. Like if Roe v. Wade cites an earlier case (making this up) plessy v. ferguson we cite Plessy v Ferguson as Plessy v Ferguson etc not just the US Reports volume that you would find it in. That is just some of my ideas, glad to get some new blood and keep it up it will save me a ton of manual labor. Wabbit98 (talk) 3:36pm, 31 July 2010 (PST)

Google Summer of Code 2011

[edit]

Hi! I'm Sumana Harihareswara, and I'm MediaWiki's GSoC administrator this summer.

Two questions:

1) Are you happy with your GSoC experience from last year? (Including the current status of the code you produced in 2010?)

2) Are you eligible to apply again this year? MediaWiki and Semantic MediaWiki are doing separate GSoC projects:

Thanks so much for your work with BenchBot on Wikisource! It's really helpful in coordinating pages at Wikisource for U.S. Supreme Court cases. I just created a new article on Wikipedia for the Supreme Court case, Time, Inc. v. Hill, and was pleasantly surprised to see BenchBot had already created a page on the case at Wikisource. Much appreciated! :) — Cirt (talk) 18:24, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

HighBeam

[edit]

Hello, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:42, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mary Burt article progress

[edit]

Hi, I'm continuing on the Mary Burt project, we've asked some German speakers about her fame in Germany.

As I mentioned, I am interested and concerned with getting copyright free images into Wikipedia. I have a fabulous old dictionary with a phantasmagoria of images. How can we see if it's images could be used? It was called the New Century Dictionary. First copyright was in 1927, last one in this book was in 1938.

KSRolph (talk) 04:19, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Glad to see that you are working on the Mary Burt article. I hope we can find one or two more articles to ensure that it passes WP:BIO.
Unfortunately, I cannot give specific advice on the book's copyright status, but I can point you to some resources that should answer your question. Commons has a simple guide, Commons:Public domain#United States, and Cornell has a more detailed guide on the public domain. You will probably need to check if the book has any copyright notice. 2013 San Mateo Maker Faire

[edit]

I can probably come Saturday, May 18, for the whole day (probability 0.95; there's one chance in 20 that other events could prevent that).

Do I need to buy a ticket for the Faire if I'm only going to staff the Wikimedia booth?

I'll be coming from San José, probably carrying a bike on Caltrain. I plan to bring a notebook computer plus an iPad Mini -- though I'm a little concerned about the iPad walking off. I can also bring some markers, a power strip, duct tape, and 6-7' ethernet cables if these would help.

Would you like me to print something? I have an Oki C6150dn color printer, which can provide fairly cheap, laser-quality copies -- 8.5 x 11" size (or anything that can be conveniently made from 8.5 x 11": I produce tri-folds and occasionally bookmarks).

If needed, I could also bring a relatively large desktop computer (Athlon 2.8 GHz quad core with 4 GB RAM running Fedora 18 Linux with a 20" monitor), plus a card table and chairs, and a case of water bottles. However, that would require me driving, and then I'd need to find a place to park, pay for parking, etc.

Thanks,

DavidMCEddy (talk) 21:48, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome, @DavidMCEddy:! I don't think we have anything to print right now but I'll let you know if we do have anything. I'm really glad you can join us! Stephen's coordinating computers so I'll let him let you know what we've got and if we might need the desktop -- but if you have a laptop that you don't mind being in the booth that would be awesome. We should be pretty good on tables and chairs -- they usually have some extras for us. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 17:40, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll bring a laptop computer and an iPad Mini, as I previously indicated.
Will I need to purchase a ticket for the Faire? Or can I get in for free (or a reduced rate) if I plan only to staff whatever Wikimedia has there? Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 22:55, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited...

Hey Stephen, great job with the Listen to Wikipedia project. Kudos to both of you for bringing this vocal wikipedia to all of us. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Model Open Government Partnership, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Transparency. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

14825 Fieber-Beyer
Thanks for the edits on the 14825 Fieber-Beyer wiki. Not sure what has happened, but the page has now been redirected to a completely different page that does not acknowledge the name or the orbital parameters you added. I'm new to this wiki stuff. Any explanation as to why another would/could do this would be appreciated. SKFB SKFB (talk) 19:58, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Slaporte, The wiki page (14825) Fieber-Beyer has been nominated for deletion. If you could contribute anything in support of keeping the page please do so here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/(14825)_Fieber-Beyer It would be very much appreciated. Thanks for letting me know, SKFB! I am not super familiar with the rules on Wikipedia notability for astronomical objects. Usually the most important thing is to find reliable third-party sources that discuss the topic. For example, if there is any academic writing about (14825) Fieber-Beyer, it is probably ready for an article. I will hunt around the internet and see what I can find. If you have access to anything (even if it's not published online!) that would be helpful! Stephen (talk) 05:13, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Knowledge of Mary Burt?

[edit]

Hi Slaporte,

I've been working to complete an article on the life of Mary Burt for some time, and I see that you did a bit of editing on it some time back. I am wondering... did you know her or anyone who does/ did? Anyway, slowly but surely I will get the article completed. I wish I knew more people who knew her and it's my understanding there was quite a bit published in Germany about her psychotherapy work. KSRolph (talk) 03:23, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Wikipedia community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Wikipedia's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

I hope to see you there! Rosiestep (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

deOrphaning script

[edit]

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list or alternatively to opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Opted-out of message delivery to your user talk page.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

For further details, see here: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, April 2016

We hope to see you -- and until then, happy editing! - Pete, Ben & Wayne

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have:

  • A brief report on Pride edit-a-thon recently held at the San Francisco Publice Library, coordinated by Merrilee:
What topics might we cover in a follow up?
Find out more about resources your public library provides to help with editing (hint, it's more than just books!)
Special announcement (secret for now but come and find out more!)
  • Join in on an in person Wikidojo!
Are you curious how your peers approach writing a Wikipedia article? This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
Announcements and impromptu topics are welcome, too!

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict.

We hope you can join us today, Wednesday, from 6 p.m. on, at our July Bay Area WikiSalon. This month only, we are going to be at Noisebridge, a hackerspace/makerspace 1.5 blocks from the 16th & Mission BART station (see the link for directions). Some of us will be working on the Wikipedia article on basic income. All info here. Some good news - we do not have to be as strict about advance RSVP at Noisebridge, so bring spontaneous guests! (Registering ahead of time is still helpful, as always, as it will help us plan ahead.)

Come and hang out, have some light snacks. Wi-Fi is available, so please bring your editing device if you plan to edit.

Also, Pete just published a writeup of the Wikidojo exercise we did last month. Your comments welcome, if he missed anything! http://wikistrategies.net/ghost-town-royals-wikidojo

Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.

Official logo of Wiki Loves Monuments

Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.

Hi, Stephen, do you deal with copyright legal stuff at all? I'm looking for the right person to follow up on the discussion above.

Am I wrong in thinking that WMF being HQed in the US means all wikipedias including zh-wiki need to comply? Do Chinese admins have to be more forthcoming about posting and enforcing copyright policy if there's as little there now as there appears to be per User:Diannaa?
