On Saturday, October 9, 2010; I had a friend in town. She wanted good Jamaican. I looked at various websites and chose Annthony's on the corner of 7th & Pecan Streets.
When we walked in there were 3 people dining which should have been a clue. It was 8:00 pm, therefore I assumed people were elsewhere. When we sat down, I ordered a drink and was told that the bartender was not there that night (think he had quit). When I asked about the jerk chicken, the waitress stated that they did not serve jerk chicken. That is similar to a soul food restaurant not serving fried chicken. I thought Jamaican restaurants were known for the jerk and curry chicken. I asked my friend if she wanted to leave. She decided that we had driven 45 minutes to get there so let's stay. The waitress stated that they had rotisserie chicken with all purpose season.
My friend ordered and I decided to go with a vegetable platter. When I asked for macaroni and cheese; I was told it was only served on Mondays so I would need to come back then. The black beans were delicious. However, the greens were no doubt Glory Greens. I have nothing against Glory Greens but on the menu it stated that the greens would have tomatoes and onions inside and they were not in there.
I asked if they had cranberry juice; the waitress stated that they do not have any juice except for island juice. That's hard for me to believe with a full stocked bar. The island juice was actually the full line of Mystic drinks. When did Mystic drinks become island juice? The waitress starts clearing the table stating they close at 9 pm and it is 8:40 pm and we were still eating. I am glad we didn't want dessert and didn't want to converse more.
The check comes and I give her my Mastercard. She comes back and says, "I am sorry we don't accept Mastercard but Visa". Shouldn't there be a sign stating the aforementioned?
Needless to say, PLEASE don't go. You will be highly disappointed. The waitress made me aware that the restaurant had been sold because the previous owner got a divorce.
