Comic Con 2024 Stay
Check in was simple. Presented ID and handed a key card and I was on my way to the room. I didn't opt for the valet services as I secured parking at a nearby garage for a fraction of the listed prices though it was a few blocks away.
Elevators and stairs to the room. Elevator was slow but functional. Not very roomy either. If you're part of a group with luggage, multiple elevators or trips might be needed.
Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Armoire for hanging clothes - no closet. TV. Desk. A vanity and bookend night stands. Bathroom was clean but a mix of dated and new. Nice hot water but water pressure a little soft for my preference. If it matters, the bathroom door locking mechanism wasn't working properly not that it mattered for me but mentioning it just in case.
Property is mere blocks from the convention center which was the reason for my stay. Just off Fifth so it wasn't too loud though I could hear some cars with their exhaust or music down up in the room. I could sometimes hear the neighboring guests opening and closing their room doors though muffled. Mentioning it just in case again.
I didn't partake in any of the property amenities like the gym or the convenience shop where drinks, snacks and some toiletries were for sale. I did drop in to Salt & Whiskey a few times - look for a separate review.
Million dollar question: would I stay again? Yep. No issues and the property is close to everything.Helpful 6Thanks 2Love this 3Oh no 0Business owner information

In the center of everything , here you will find Horton grand. The outside appearance alone will definitely let you know you are at the right place. It has a very old school look to it with added modern technology of course. As soon as you walk through the automated doors, you are just like wowwwwwwww! It's quiet . Not to big room wise but perfect for that nice cozy feel. The view from my room was very nice and over looked some of the tall buildings around downtown. I loved the fire place and the body wash. lol yes it was the little things here.
If you browse around the faculty , you'll see a nice history among the building and they also have a nice patio area as well. The best cool thing I liked was their bar! (Salt and whiskey) The display along with the great customer service was awesome. They do provide a tour of the facility.(ask front desk) and be ready to be amazed! Overall it was a great stay. The only thing I didn't like was the parking. 45 valet plus the parking fee per day. No thanks! But there are plenty of places to park for the substitute however it would be more convenient to park at the same place you're staying. But hey , we can't have it all right?Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thank you so much for your wonderfully detailed review! We relish our perfect location and rich history, we're so glad you were able to look around the property. We realize that parking is a hot button issue in downtown San Diego, it is hard to come by and the price really dictates as such. We hope you can enjoy one of our Premier Suites on your next visit, we keep the classic vibe with amazing upgrades! Todd Husted, General Manager

3.5 stars
Stayed there for two nights.
Five stars for cleanliness. Shower pressure was pretty good and hot water came out quickly.
Four stars for the aesthetic. Cute decorations. They have a cute restaurant/bar on the first floor. They had a very good selection of whiskey.
Five stars for the location. So close to gaslamp.
Deducted stars for the creaky floor, expensive valet and lack of outlet. Every time the upstairs guest walked around, the floor would squeak and it was almost like nails on a chalkboard. Our upstairs neighbors would wake up mad early and so that woke me up. They only had two outlets.
Valet only. They say $50 a night but the sign says $60. And on our booking it said $50 per stay. Fortunately there was a parking lot one block away that was $35 a night.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to submit your review. We understand the frustration with parking, it is extremely limited in the San Diego Gaslamp and the valet companies are certainly aware. Valet prices raise with demand, but we will always honor the price that you booked with. When you return, please just let our guest service team know about your original booking so we can take care of that for you. We hope to see you again soon. Todd Husted, General Manager

Hotel is out dated, which is fine for what they're going for but doesn't have that old cool hotel vibe. Would I stay here again....no. But for the money and to check it out for one night is fine.

This was my second stay here at this hotel. It was just as I remember from staying here 10 years ago, funny enough I even had the same room! We checked in Saturday morning and checked out Sunday (short stay)
The pros are- fantastic location, you can walk to see the baseball games or up and down Gaslamp to all of the restaurants, bars etc.
The cons are that being an older hotel you can hear all of your neighbors on top of you and on the side of you as well.. the rooms are clean, tidy and charming. The whole hotel has a historic feel and is beautiful. All of the workers are always smiling and happy to help.
I liked our room with the double beds, and it had a fireplace. Our friends stayed in the suite and it was larger but ours had a balcony facing the court yard below with twinkling lights and trees. There was a wedding there and we met some of the party, they had nothing but fantastic things to say about the whole process.
We did enjoy their bar and restaurant; the food was good!
The best part of the stay was truly the shower, warm, great water pressure, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion provided smelled amazing and worked wonders!
If you're looking for a place that's decently priced, in the best location possible this is it!
Even cheap valet!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thank you for posting your lovely review and welcome back! We truly appreciate all your accolades - the hotel, our restaurant, and our amazing team. I wouldn't go as far to say there is cheap valet parking, but it is cheaper than other downtown markets. We're excited for your third stay! Todd Husted, General Manager

Centered in the older area of the Gaslamp amongst the many older buildings you can find the Horton Grand Hotel with the designer windows that if you look closely, you can see the way glass was made back in the 1800s. Back in the time you didn't have the many modern appliances you still had the gas lamps and to warm your bed you had to use bedwarmers that cooked at the fireplace in a large fireplace and carried over in the pan stuck in the blankets to make things warm.
With the Horton Grand the many years had come and gone the times of the cowboys and the saloons that populated the city coming of the car to the many parts, yet the city of San Diego was still growing. The many things that had gone on in the city and the many secrets that spawned out many years the Horton Grand that had its many visitors that were cowboy's and the big oil bankers that came to San Diego where they enjoyed the town, and the railroad serviced the many places when it made its long journey. The many things that have happened in the city from those that were famous and the gamblers that were caught with another man's wife finding themselves getting shot in the Horton Grand that was a card game that went bad. When you take a look back at the times the many areas of the city had cars that were slowly coming forward many times you had found that back in the 1900s there were the unfavorable come to town the formation of the mobsters that had made their presence known.
The Horton Grand Hotel was the Richman's hotel. Back in the 1900s you had the bankers and the many that rode the train there would be the occasional big meetings and to see the many events that would happen with the city was the home to Wyatt Earp Sherriff Marshal the law man. Horton Grand Hotel is one place that has so much tell over the many years there are those which have died many of them have passed on and there are those that have still never left the Horton Grand Hotel. To take a walk about the Gaslamp and the streets you could hear the wind blow and the sounds of the footsteps of those that have passed on.
As a Yelp Elite Reviewer, the Horton Grand Hotel is the hotel you can walk through and see the many fashions of the wood and the carpet that takes you back many years when the early Hotels had you bath in a large metal tub that they would set up in your room. Yes, there are the eyes of the Sherrif Wyatt Earp that watches over the many places for his office was about a block away. Have a safe evening, Happy Halloween.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Oct 17, 2022Previous reviewFrom the many places that I have been to see the many places and to experience the many fun places of life you have to step back and say to yourself does the location you have come to have history from the looks that it has and the feel the Interior. That many people think that so many place are decorated to look that way but when you see the place you have arrived to has great history that links to the city.
What had drawn me to the Horton Grand was the Salt and Whiskey a classic western 1940s bar that was just opening and it gave me a chance to look at the main lobby that was just remarkable, and with the bar that was designed in the bar with the themes of the of the 1930s and the 1940s with the stylish wallpaper. When you come to a place that catches your eye and the welcoming style that the Horton Grand had it was like that, I had just walked back in time. The stylish foyer and the ornate marble flooring that had told me it had the looks of the first New York Hotels that many of them were carpet. The many different areas of Influence have been from European influence the many uses of marble and the ornate wallpaper that you see in the bar that has the warmth and the flare of not many other bars would have to their establishments.
The Horton Grand has history from the European countries from Innsbruck Austria from Vienna from the train boom that was started the city of San Diego had become one that was fast becoming the main train industry boom that many were coming to San Diego. The Hotel was constructed in 1887 with a European flair and the hotel was constructed as a luxury hotel during the times you have the proper gents that would have ladies in long dresses the particular clothing of the age. The main hotel lobby with Victorian windows and the colors of the light and dark browns that bring out the true feel of the Horton Grand Hotel.
The Salt and Whiskey is one of the best casual Intimate bars that showcases the feel of the 1930s and the 1940s the stylish bar tells you the story of the many intimates speak Easy's and the way the many bars served drinks and the food of the time.
As a Yelp Elite Reviewer, the many times which I had met with friends and the seeing the many parts of the Horton Grand Hotel makes the place one of the Greatest History lessons of all time. - Marie C.Mission Viejo, CA0250Sep 28, 2024
DISHONEST!
We gave shotty looking valet the keys to our brand new car, trusting them with it, but was given back a car with a scratch and small dent. They have denied it was them, when we literally just purchased this car. BEWARE!
NO HONOR, NO RESPONSBILITY. Sad business :(Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

We apologize for your experience, but as you may have noticed from your email transactions, the valet service is a 3rd party company (which is the case for most downtown hotels.) They handle all cars and claims, and they are completely unaffected by a bad review for one of the many hotels they service. As I have learned in my travels, I always check my vehicle upon leaving a valet service to check for any damage. I understand that this is an extra step in a check-out process, but I have learned from my own mistakes in the past. It is impossible to claim damage after a vehicle has left an establishment and insurance companies will deny the claim every time. We receive mostly positive feedback for our valet company, we apologize that your experience was not the same. Todd Husted, General Manager
