I'd like to start this review by saying that my partner had won a two night stay at this hotel through a raffle at Pride '24.
I live downtown, SD and have never seen the Westgate hotel through my ventures. So, when we booked the two free nights for my birthday, it was interesting to see that this hotel is kind of off to the side and secluded on second ave, coming off Broadway. The placement isn't helpful because again, you don't immediately see it, especially with trees blocking the name. Unfortunately, where it is downtown carries a horrible odor or urine and feces and you get hit in the face with it walking towards this place.
The hotel is beautiful on the outside and even going in. It has a nice old school feel to it and plays music to mirror this. The staff seemed to be nice and the room was cute. The A/C blew nice and cold which you can understand is important when you're hot bodied and SD is going through a heat wave. The shower/tub but had a little bit of rust here and there but ultimately, the room was clean and well kept.
A big problem for me was the trolley. I'm a sensitive sleeper and the trolley being right next door was loud enough to sound like it was in my room and we were on the 16th floor! Not to mention the trolley runs pretty much all day/night. Also, there was a guest in the room near me that had a little yappy dog that didn't stop barking. This hotel had a specific no pet policy and clearly didn't know about this dog or it might have been deemed a service dog... not too sure and don't want to judge, but it was bothersome. Ultimately, this hotel has a nice feel but is just placed in a bad location. For the price it would have been (about $700 for the two nights) I would recommend any other hotel Downtown. But then again, if you can avoid staying around Broadway, I would say to do that instead.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - John G.Palm Springs, CA77758Sep 4, 2024
Stayed at the Westgate for my girlfriend's birthday weekend.
I chose this hotel based up the reviews and photographs and was not disappointed. The hotel is beautifully appointed and has real class and European style. Our room was very nicely appointed and had great views of the city.
The service at the front desk and valet was excellent.
I will definitely stay here again.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 44612233671Aug 31, 2024
Terrible customer service and terrible event management.
I booked the Whistledown Tea experience on 5/22/24 for 6/22/24. After further thought and seeing other people post their experience, I decided to cancel. The cost of the experience just didn't seem worth it to me. So I cancelled my reservation on 6/17/24. The booking confirmation stated that there was free cancellation up to 48 hours prior to the reservation. I cancelled my reservation with over 48 hours.
I waited until 6/19/24 to see if my refund was just taking awhile or process, but it did not. I tried reaching out to the hotel directly and was directed to the event manager's voicemail. I left a message and was hoping for a call back the next day. I didn't get a call back so I called my credit card to dispute the charge. Luckily my credit card worked with me but they did say they allowed the business 12 days to issue the refund themselves. So we waited 12 days for the hotel to reach out and refund me AND THEY STILL DIDN'T.
After 16 long business days, I finally received my refund from my credit card.
I would not trust my booking here again and would advise everyone to be very careful and considerate when making reservations.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

I understand that this experience has impacted your trust in our services, and I regret that we fell short of your expectations. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will use it to make necessary improvements.

Located in downtown San Diego, Westgate Hotel is like a staying at a fancy Parisian hotel from the moment you step inside.
Elegantly decorated with lots of French antiquities floor to ceiling, yet appealing and inviting. Service from staff are helpful but need refined improvement.
Many areas; outdoor courtyard for dining within the hotel grounds are still under renovation and have not been open.
Like the downtown area of many major cities, homelessness is apparent within a block and therefore, walking outside the hotel compound is NOT advisable for safety.
One of the best features is the harpist who
performs on the main lobby on weekends. Her music selection includes classical and modern and the sound of the harp in the air adds to the elegant flair of the Westgate Hotel, you'll feel as if you're at one of the salons at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris, but sans travel jet lag so just enjoy the soufflé and sip Rosé champagne. Worth a staycation Recommend!Helpful 29Thanks 7Love this 28Oh no 1 - Sep 28, 2024

This review is specifically for afternoon tea; I have not stayed as a guest nor used the amenities.
I'm on a mission to take afternoon tea from every location in San Diego and always beyond excited when I got an ad on IG about the Whistledown Experience as tea at the Westgate was on my list and I love a good theme. TLDR: I loved it and want to return for their normal tea service!
The lobby is a stunning venue and I love the almost "grand living room" with the seating. Very comfortable and the service was fantastic. The price included a complimentary glass of champagne, a 3 course afternoon tea, a pot of tea per person, and a small jar of a special themed tea blend to take home. There was a string quartet as well, which really elevated the experience.
The savories were SO GOOD! Like the chicken salad tea sandwich was incredible and I liked that they added salmon to the standard cucumber tea sandwich to elevate it. There was a prawn appetizer that was incredible as well but honestly the first course was incredible. I'm still thinking about that scone. That scone is why I'll be back, I need it again. I wasn't a fan of the desserts (especially the rose macaron which tasted like eating potpourri), but the savories and the teas
Beyond thrilled to have this experience (it seems to have completed sold out already, praising my algorithm for getting it to me early) and hope Westgate will bring it back when season 4 returns.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sd S.Dana Point, CA24281Dec 9, 2024

We booked this hotel for a last minute trip to San Diego during Covid.
it was very clean and elegant.
The room service was good and quick, however their menu and items were very limited. we were greeted with
champagne and got our rooms earlier than their check in time without any extra fee. The service at pool was very quick and our server was very attentive.
they also have a good valet service.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 26, 2023

We met Mr. Grinch at High Tea one day,
At the Westgate Hotel, a short drive away.
He grumbled and sneered, oh what a sight,
With a heart so small, green fur so bright.
~
I said, "Why Grinch, a long face you wear?
Come on, let's eat, we're happy to share!"
He scowled and grumbled, "Food's all a fuss,
But I'll have the green eggs, if I must."
~
As we sat there in an awkward silence,
I saw a bit of his fabled defiance.
When he began to laugh at this fancy soirée,
I realized that Grinch wasn't all what they say.
~
Ol' Grinch's eyes widened with sheer surprise,
As he tasted the samples that reached for the skies.
A smile grew upon his greenish face,
Maybe there's hope, in this Grinch's case.
~
He told us a story as we munched on dessert,
How Christmas spirit he wanted to hurt.
After the pastries, a change had occurred,
Now he loves Christmas, that was absurd!
~
Next time you meet a Grinch in your day,
Invite him for a tea, come what may.
You never know what a little joy might do,
To soften his heart, for the rest of the Who's!
~
Pro tip: We are here for their special event: Grinch Tea. The three courses were made fresh and delightful. The servers never let our teacups go cold. We joined Cindy Lou to share Christmas Eve with grumpy ol' Grinch, who begrudgingly came down off his mountain. Seeing the love he gave to the kiddos made my heart grow 3 sizes.Helpful 6Thanks 3Love this 12Oh no 0Business owner information

I'm writing this review for Monica. The lady who works at the front desk and worked her hardest to make my birthday stay special.
Thank you for letting me check in early! My room was gorgeous, probably the nicest I've ever stayed in. And the views are spectacular. It even came with a robe!
And the best part is there was so much to do at the hotel for the day. I enjoyed the spa mostly. But probably the highlight of the trip for me was High Tea. The harpist was talented, the finger sandwiches were delectable, and I would absolutely recommend it/do it again.
Thank you for your hospitality!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information
