*APEX – is the prestigious Accelerated Programme for Excellence funded by the Ministry of Higher
Education, Malaysia
School of Communication
Universiti Sains Malaysia has offered communication studies at the School of
Humanities since 1970 with emphasis on a philosophy of education to meet the needs
of the communication industry in the country. Its graduates were conferred with the
Bachelor of Arts degree.
In 1983, the Board of Studies, established by the university’s Senate recommended the
establishment of a Bachelor of Communication Programme and was approved by the
Ministry of Education in June 1984. The curriculum structure under the Bachelor of
Communication was implemented in the 1984/85 academic year.
In line with some new developments introduced by the Ministry of Education, the
curriculum of Bachelor of Communication was again reviewed and redesigned. The
current curriculum was implemented in the 1994/95 academic session together with
the foundation of the new School of Communication in 1995.
Philosophy
The School of Communication, USM offers students a study scheme that exposes
students to the diverse traditions available in the field. This is done by examining and
applying the knowledge critically and analytically. The ultimate purpose is to provide
an open and integrated approach to communication studies through:
Multi-disciplinary approach
This approach will expose students to the diverse intellectual traditions in
communication studies and to reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of the field.
Liberal Education Approach
Through the major and minor curricula, students will be able to enhance their
knowledge and skills in one area of specialisation while taking different or related
minor courses offered by other schools;
Integration of Theory and Practice
The programme offers a carefully designed curriculum that integrates both aspects of
theory and practice to prepare students for various opportunities and challenges in
the communication industry.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
The School of Communication offers three areas of specialisations i.e. Film &
Broadcasting, Journalism and Persuasive Communication.
Film & Broadcasting
This course offers a combination of critical and analytical understanding of screen
studies and professional training in audio, video and film production. Students will
be trained to produce quality media products as well as thought-provoking screen
products that critically address various pressing issues in society.
Journalism
The course offers students an understanding of the critical aspects of media literacy,
news writing and other forms of mass media. Students will be trained to possess
critical understanding and knowledge on various issues pertaining to the sociological
aspects of journalism as well as useful skills in writing, reporting, photojournalism and
desktop publishing.
Persuasive Communication
Persuasive Communication integrates several academic fields related to persuasion
and influence, i.e. advertising, public relations, public communication campaign and
event management. Students specialising in Persuasive Communication will be able
to understand various intellectual paradigms, theories and knowledge, which they will
then be able to apply to various practical-oriented courses.
POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
The Master of Communication in Screen Studies (by coursework) is
designed for students who wish to develop theoretical knowledge and production
skills in film & video in the context of new media technology. This programme will
also examine current global issues relating to the electronic media as well as issues of
convergence and the interface between film, television and multimedia.
Master of Communication - Science and Environmental Journalism (by
coursework) is designed to prepare students for a professional career as science
and environmental writers, reporters and editors in the media industry, research
institutions and environment related organisations. This programme is geared towards
preparing students for the professional track and most of the courses are theorybased.
A strong understanding of the media processes and practices as well as the
role of science in society will enable communicators to make significant contributions
to the public understanding of science and environmental issues.
Master of Arts (Communication)
The Master of Arts (Communication) is a broad-based programme which emphasizes
both communication theory and research and their applications to communication
policy and practices. The programme is offered via two modes:
(a) Master of Arts (Communication) – Mixed Mode
This mode provides students with the opportunity to develop sound
understanding of major communication theories and research specifically in the
study of journalism, communication and societal issues, technology and culture.
(b) Master of Arts (Communication) – Research Mode
The second mode caters to students who already posses a strong theoretical
background and wish to undertake independent research.
(c) Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy candidate is chosen selectively from holders of a
good Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours in a related
field from a recognised university. Applicants are required to submit a research
proposal. The Ph.D. program is offered on a full-time or part-time basis.
School of Computer Sciences
The School of Computer Sciences was established officially on the 1st of March
1995 after functioning for a period of 10 years as the Division of Computer Science,
an independent and autonomous unit within the then School of Mathematical and
Computer Sciences.
Over the past 15 years, the School has engaged in various developments, advances, and
achievements of computer science pertaining to the academic programmes, research
and development, consultancy, community services and others. The School is now in
a leading position as far as the research and development activities are concerned
and is gearing up its efforts to meet new challenges of research and development by
introducing 3 clusters to support our research activities. These 3 clusters (Services
Computing, Data to Knowledge, and Infrastructure) can be seen as our integrated
approach in line with the emerging trend of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary
research.
The School maintains strong and strategic linkages with the industry. Formal and
informal events take place to exchange ideas on benefiting the curriculum and the
industry. The School is involved in various joint projects with all types of industries
supported by the national and international grants. The School is also involved in
consultancies, particularly in software system developments.
In terms of global partners, the School has always maintained strong and strategic
linkages with universities in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore and
School of Distance Education
The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Distance Learning programmes was established
in 1971 and USM is a pioneer university in Malaysia offering degree programmes
through distance education. Currently, the school offers four undergraduate degree
programmes, namely, B.Sc. (Hons.), B.A. (Hons.), B. Soc.Sc. (Hons.) and B.Mgt. (Hons.)
with a total of more than 200 courses being offered annually. A course is delivered
using specially designed self-learning modules, compulsory face-to-face interaction
during the three-week annual residential course and live video conferencing as well as
asynchronous collaboration in the electronic portal. An array of electronic resources
is also provided via specially developed learning object repositories. The curriculum
deployed is akin to the on-campus full-time academic programmes. Since 1992/1993,
learners have been able to complete their programmes entirely via distance learning
without spending the final year as full-time students. Since then, more than 15,000
students have graduated from the school.
Besides the undergraduate programmes, the School of Distance Education also offers
postgraduate programmes by research leading to the M.Sc., M.Soc.Sc., M.Mgt., M.A. and
Ph.D. degrees. The programmes require students to undertake a research project under
the supervision of an academic staff. As of 2009, there are 71 academic staff members who
possess a diverse range of research expertise, such as in the areas of distance education/
instructional technology/e-learning, geography, literature, history, anthropology/sociology,
political science, economics, physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, management
and language. The expertise of these academic staff members is evident through their
extensive publications in international and national peer-reviewed journals, books and
conference proceedings.
The research of the academic staff is funded by international and national organisations
as well as agencies. In the year of 2009, there was a total of 68 research projects from
various awarding bodies amounting to about RM10 million. With the large amount
of funding made available, the research laboratories of the school are well-equipped
with state-of-the-art technology and broad band IT support. International research
collaborations among the academic staff continue to grow. The research intensive
status of the university has also witnessed an increasing number of international postdoctoral
positions being made available for specific research projects undertaken by
the academic staff of the school.
Due to the expertise and facilities made available, the number of postgraduate students
enrolled continues to flourish. Each year, the school attracts a large number of research
students – these are not only local students but also international students from countries
all over the world. The research students are associated with research projects in
which they can work as research officers or assistants funded by the research grants.
The research projects conducted by the academic staff have also won many awards in
competitions and at exhibitions of research products held international and nationally.
Specifically, the e-learning products developed by the school has won a medal in the
ITEX exhibition as well won awards in the Penang Chief Minister K-ICT competition.
In October 2009,our research innovation entitled “Using SMS Mobile Technology for
M-Learning” has won a special award by Asia Pacific Mobile & Edutainment Advisory Panel.
School of Educational Studies
The School of Educational Studies (SES) was established in 1970, a year after the
inauguration of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The initial aim of the school was to
produce graduate science teachers and to this end, a pioneer group of 20 science teachers
graduated in 1971/72 session. From this humble beginning, The SES has emerged as one
of the biggest schools in USM in terms of student numbers. The number of academic
staff too has steadily increased and today we have more than 62 highly qualified academic
staff in diverse sub-fields of education and 30 dedicated support staff. The SES’s mission
is to develop and dispense knowledge through innovative teaching and research and
to nurture exceptional educationist through internationally acknowledge programs.
At the undergraduate level, the SES offers 3 main degree programmes; a B.Sc. (Education),
B.A. (Education) and B.Ed. SES also has over 800 (by research masters 42, Ph.D. 230)
postgraduate students including foreign students from The Middle East, Indonesia,
Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, India and Africa. We offer taught courses
as well as research programs at the masters and Ph.D. levels. We were the first
university in Malaysia to start offering the Education Doctorate Programme. The SES
is continuously improving facilities for research students, especially working space
and labs for computing and multimedia, psychometric labs, teaching, counseling. As for
research, The SES is also working towards a more diverse and high level research and
data gathering in the field of education, using tools such as EEG and polygraph machines
(under Dr. Theva), and advance method of data storage and analysis (CEREC under
Dr. Nordin and Dr. Hazri). We are also collaborating with other school of studies in
research and students’ supervisions.
Research at The SES is housed under BERU (Basic Education Research Unit) which was
established in 1990. Presently it has more than RM10 million worth of research grants.
Initially, BERU’s major task was to conduct research in evaluation and development
of resource materials to enhance teaching and learning. However, in response to the
charging landscapes in education, it has moved on to meet the needs of the nation in
the field of education. Currently, The SES is actively involved in a number of projects
such as the INSPIRE Project to facilitate and enhance teaching and learning in remote
schools in Sabah and the NCER Project to lessen the urban and rural gap in providing
quality education. The SES staff too is leading researchers in a number of studies with
grants from various institutions. Among the prominent ones are; Children’s Number
Sense (Munirah Ghazali), Zero-Injury Play Area for Preschool and Development of
Self Directed Learning (Sharifah Norhaidah), e-Learning and Teaching (Abdul Rashid
Mohamed), Renewal Energy and Energy Efficiency (Hashimah Yunus), Thought Patterns
of Autistic Children and Leadership Styles in Special Education (Susie See Ching Mey),
Employability of the Disabled (Melissa Ng Abdullah), Professional Development Matrix
for English Teachers (Kamarul Kabilan), ICT and and Classroom Applications (Termit
Kaur), Online Multimedia Learning Objects-Repository for Special Learning and Mind
Mapping and Development (Shahizan).
Based on the experiences SES has gathered in the field of educational research, it
has been consulted by numerous institutions to develop their programmes. Among
the more notable institutions are the Federal Government of Malaysia (through the
Northern Corridor Economic Region, Ministry of Education and other ministries)
State Governments of Terengganu, Johor, Penang and Sabah. Internationally too SES
has been associated with projects by UNESCO and in the Republic of Maldives, Qatar,
Japan, African nations and Indonesia. Its partnership with the Centre of International
Collaboration in Education (CICE) at Hiroshima University is leading towards establishing
a Bottom Billion Programme and the Sejahtera Corps, where our students and staff will
be involved in local as well as international teaching practices and community services.
In the past, The SES staff and students have won many accolades from public and
professional institutions. More recently Prof. Susie See Ching Mey was awarded the
Susan Jones Sears Distinguished Alumni Award and Prof. Abdul Rashid was made the
Chairman of the Education Deans’ Council. A number of academic staffs were awarded
fellowship and visiting scholarship such as Assoc. Prof. Anna Christina (Endeavour
Research Fellowship), Prof. Munirah (Fullbright), Assoc. Prof. Hairul Nizam (visiting
scholar Wisconsin-Madison, USA) and Assco. Prof. Rohizani (visiting scholar University
of Sheffield, UK). Our students have also won USM best both Ph.D. and Master’s Thesis
award for the applied arts category (Gan Wee Ling and Li Xuan Xi respectively).
The SES is often being called upon to assists in educational and training aspects by
other school of studies and Centres of Excellent in projects such as; the Healthy Life
Style, Healthy Campus, Road Safety, the Haj, Renewal Energy and Brain Network. It is
also involved with USM’s APEX based programmes such as the Bottom Billion Team
and Colligence, Compendium of Collective Intelligence. We also have strong links with
the public and private schools and other educational institutions through The Industry
Community Network.
The SES does not rest on its laurels. It is continuously trying to improve educational
delivery through research, collaborative work, networking and innovation. We have
embarked on an ambitious Future Global Curriculum Programme. Through this
programme we are working with local and international partners from diverse fields
to improve the various aspects of education in order to be prepared for the future.
Experts from the medical and health sciences, housing building and planning, engineering,
School of Housing, Building and
Planning
The School of Housing, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was
established in 1972 to produce skilled personnel in the field of construction. The School
was modelled along the lines as envisioned by Professor Koenigsberger and Markus in
order to meet the needs of a developing country. The School is unique in its approach
as it adapted a multi-disciplinary curriculum where the students are exposed to different
yet interdependent facets of construction to prepare them in facing challenges of the
construction world. The programmes are designed and developed to significantly
strengthen and advance the knowledge and skills of the school’s undergraduates. The
focus is not only to equip the students with technical aspects of construction but also
to build strong interpersonal skills which are equally important when interacting with
other players in the industry.
The School has now over 66 full-time academic staff, including 6 professors and 25
associate professors, with more than 70% of the lecturers being Ph.D. holders. At
present, the School offers seven disciplines at the undergraduate level. These are
Town Planning, Architecture, Building Technology, Construction Management, Interior
Design, Quantity Surveying and Building Surveying. Professional courses offered in
the School such as Architecture and Quantity Surveying have received accreditations
from respected national and international professional bodies such as the Malaysian
Board of Architects (LAM), the Board of Quantity Surveyors (BQSM) and the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). On the postgraduate front, the M.Sc. Planning
programme offered by the school is accredited with the Malaysian Institute of Planners
(MIP), thus providing another avenue to increase the professional workforce within
the construction industry.
In line with its aims of developing a strong research culture, the school offers Masters
and Ph.D. programmes in construction related areas. Both instructional based and
research based programmes have helped to boost the school’s reputation as being at the
forefront of knowledge development and expansion. The staff is also actively involved in
several consultancy activities to assist in tackling actual industrial problems as well as to
continually support innovative developments in the industry. With extensive industrial
experience and close contacts with the industry, we can ensure that research products/
outcomes and consultancy services provided are industry-relevant and market-oriented.
The School of Housing, Building and Planning has always been proactive and progressive in
implementing academic courses and conducting research that serve to broaden existing
knowledge and to generate new knowledge, a mission it aspires to uphold in future.

School of Industrial Technology
The School commenced with the establishment of the School of Applied Sciences,
which offered the Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.App.Sc.) programme in 1973.
Three programmes were offered at its inception, i.e.: Electronic Science and
Technology, Food Science and Technology and Polymer Science and Technology.
During the 1974/1975 academic session, a fourth programme, i.e. Mineral Science and
Technology was introduced. A fifth programme, i.e. Computer Science and Technology
was introduced in the 1979/1980 academic session.
On 7 th August 1984, the School of Applied Sciences was renamed as the School of
Engineering Sciences and Industrial Technology. In line with this change, the curriculum
was also modified to meet the requirement of engineering and industrial technology
courses. Bachelor of Applied Science (B.App.Sc.) was replaced by Bachelor of
Engineering (B.Eng.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.).
During the 1986/1987 session, the School of Engineering Sciences and Industrial
Technology were separated. The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and
the School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering moved to the Perak
Branch Campus while the School of Industrial Technology remained in the main
campus, Penang, housing the Food Technology, Polymer Science and Technology,
Quality Control & Instrumentation, and the Wood, Paper and Coatings Technology
(changed to Bioresource, Paper and Coatings Technology Programme in 2002/2003)
programmes.
Beginning with the 2001/2002 academic session, Polymer Technology Programme was
transformed into Polymer Engineering Programme and was relocated to the School
of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering at the USM Branch Campus in Sri
Ampangan, Nibong Tebal. The Quality Control & Instrumentation Programme was
also upgraded into Mechatronic Engineering Programme and relocated to the School
of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nibong Tebal.
The School of Industrial Technology continually progressed, with the introduction
of Environmental Technology programme in 1999/2000 session, and Bioprocess
Technology programme in 2008/2009 session.
First Degree Programmes
Beginning with the 2008/9 Academic Session, the School of Industrial Technology
offers four programmes in technology specialisation which cover a study period of
three years (six semesters) or four years (eight semesters), i.e.: -
• Bioresource, Paper and Coatings Technology (Three-year programme)
• Environmental Technology (Three-year programme)
• Food Technology (Four-year programme)
• Bioprocess Technology (Four-year programme)
Acceptance to any of the above programmes is subjected to selection and entry
qualification. Most of the first year courses consist of basic science courses in
Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Computer. From level 200, all students are
required to enroll for courses relevant to their respective programmes up to level
300 whereby they are required to conduct one mini research project.
Students also are required to undergo industrial training in various industries relevant
to their study programme for at least eight weeks. This training is aimed at exposing
the students to actual practice and atmosphere of the industry.
Graduate Studies Programmes
The School of Industrial Technology offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. by research in the fields
of Bioresource, Paper and Coatings Technology, Environmental Technology and Food
Technology. One of the objectives of the programme is to provide candidates with the
opportunity to further their studies and to achieve academic maturity via research
that is beneficial and significant to the community at large. The academic staff have
Research Product
Neodles: New Noodles With Gastroresistant Properties For Diabesity
Market
Neodles is a dried yellow noodle with gastroresistant properties. The reduced
Glycaemic Index (GI) property is achieved through a protein cross-linking technology
that traps starch within the noodles’ network coupled with partial replacement of
wheat flour with dietary-resistant starch blends. The formulation and process do not
affect sensory properties of the final products. Since Neodles releases glucose at a
slower rate it is friendlier to diabetic or prediabetic (insulin—sensitizing property of
the resistant starch blends) and to overweight or weight-watching (satiety sustenance
property) consumers who can now enjoy yellow noodles without resulting in
abnormally high levels of blood glucose. In addition Neodles also confer the health
benefits of dietary fiber (17 gram of dietary fiber per 100 gram of noodles) that
promotes regularity and thus can also be considered as a digestive-comfort food.
The intellectual property of this invention lies in the trade-secret formulation
and methods of preparation of the noodles.
Neodles, whose development was supported by a MOSTI Innofund,
has been clinically evaluated for in-vivo Glycemic Index (GI) value
and has been licensed to AJV Nutraceutix Sdn. Bhd for commercial
development.

Tasek Gelugor Language Enrichment Programme
In tandem with the implementation of teaching and learning of Mathematics and
Science in English which commenced in 2003, the School of Languages, Literacies
and Translation has taken the initiative to offer services to improve the necessary
skills as well as proficiency level among students as well as teachers. The School of
Languages, Literacies and Translation believes that it is indeed crucial that specific
measures are taken to achieve the second core of the National Mission which is to
advance in the potential of gaining knowledge, developing creativity and innovation
as well as cultivating a sense of ‘first class thinking’ among Malaysians. The target
group of the programme includes students and teachers from all primary schools
under the Parliamentary Constituency of Tasek Gelugor, Pulau Pinang. With activities
such as workshops and seminars, teachers are given the opportunity to improve
their skills in teaching and learning Mathematics and Science in English. Additionally,
programmes for primary school students such as tuition classes were coordinated
and organised by both teachers in the Tasek Gelugor Constituency and the academic
staff of the school with the support from the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, Penang
State Education Department and Seberang Perai Northern District Education Office.
This programme is fully sponsored by Y.B. Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, the MP of
Tasek Gelugor Constituency.
The BOOK Club@SoLLaT, USM
In its continuous effort to promote literacy and lifelong learning, the School of Languages,
Literacies and Translation launched its latest academic venture – ‘The BOOK Club@
SoLLaT, USM’ on 10 th August 2009. This programme is primarily designed to develop
reading habits among USM students as well as to enhance their critical thinking skills.
The event was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul
Razak, and graced by Puan Sri Datin Masrah Haji Abidin, patron of the book club
programme. ‘The BOOK Club@SoLLaT USM’ initiative incorporates the Sustainable
Learning Environment concept advocated by the university, which promotes lifelong
learning and the sharing of ideas via discussion groups. A traditional gazebo called the
Wakaf IQRA’ serves as the meeting area where members can gather to read, participate
in book discussions and gain insights on various issues related to their readings. The
objective of the BOOK Club@SoLLaT, USM is not only to assist students in developing
good reading habits but also to help them acquire better reading skills.
Agroecology
The Agroecology Corner was inspired by the Healthy Campus concept of sustainable
development and the pledge “To Go Green”, an idea which is currently being put into
practice throughout the campus. This project involved the design, development and
management of a sustainable agricultural system, taking into account the relationship
between man and the environment. The objective is not only to instil a sense of family
closeness among the staff and students but also to encourage the sharing of knowledge.
It is hoped that the Agroecology Corner will enhance the learning atmosphere and
create a clean, green and healthy environment.
The School of Management (SOM) was established on 1 st of December 1989, tracing
its roots back to 1978 when the Management major was introduced in the School of
Social Science. Later in the decade, the School of Management was officially launched
and began its operations as a separate entity. Over the years, the school has grown
and transformed creatively and in 2003, the Ministry of Education has granted School
of management as the leading School of Business Management and Accounting in the
country.
The School offers a wide range of programs and is committed to teaching and research
excellence. At undergraduate level a new Management program was initiated to
enhance students’ ability to an experiencing competitive environment. The Bachelor of
Management degree is offered in five areas of specialisation namely: Finance, Marketing,
Operations Management, Organisational Behavior and International Business. Due
to high demand for qualified Accountants, Bachelor of Accounting Degree (B.Acc.)
program was first offered in the 1999/2000 academic session. The B.Acc. graduates
School of Social Sciences
Research is an integral aspect of the academic activities of the School. Staff members
of the School of Social Sciences pursue research work either individually or in groups
(clusters) and also undertake research projects funded both locally and internationally.
The emphasis is on multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approaches. Individuals
in the School address a diverse range of research questions. The research interests
and strengths of the School include finance, trade, industrialisation and technology
transfer, gender issues and industrial relations, environmental issues, conflict
resolution, regional conflict and social movement, and the development of civil society,
and public administration. In addition, many staff members are involved in specialised
consultancies and policy-oriented work for both the public and private sectors.
Graduate students pursuing degrees by dissertation undertake research work in
a wide range of disciplines offered by the School in the fields of Anthropology &
Sociology, Economics, Development Planning and Management, Political Science,
Peace and Conflict Studies, Social Work, Islamic Development Management, European
Studies and Psychology. The School also offers graduate programmes by coursework
in Master of Public Administration and Master in Economic Management, by mixed
mode in Master of International Studies (European Studies), Master of Social Work,
Master of Islamic Development Management and Master of Social Science (Asian
Studies), as well as by research leading to Master in Social Sciences and Ph.D. degrees.
School-based Units such as Research and Education for Peace (REPUSM) and AIDS
Action and Research Group (AARG) are in the forefront of inter-disciplinary and
proactive research pertaining to contemporary issues. The REPUSM has also been
the Regional Secretariat for the Southeast Asian Conflict Studies Network (SEACSN)
since 2001, pioneering research and education work in the fields of peace and conflict
studies around the region.
The School is linked internationally through the campus-wide computer network of
the University. It is also equipped with Computer Laboratories fitted with the latest
