From a young age, Shamsa was captivated 

by the world around her, filling sketchbooks 

with drawings that captured her observations. 

Encouraged by her mother, her artistic 

journey blossomed into a passion that 

encompassed various forms of expression, 

including painting, photography, and mixed 

media. These experiences laid the groundwork 

for her future endeavors in jewelry design, 

highlighting the interconnectedness of 

artistic mediums. 

In an insightful interview, Shamsa reflected 

on how her diverse artistic background 

influenced her approach to jewelry making. 

“Concepts and inspirations often overlapped, 

which inspired me to try out other 

art forms,” she noted, leading to the establishment 

of The O Jewelry in 2014. The name 

“The O Jewelry” carries dual significance: it 

represents her family name while symbolizing 

a circle, reflecting the timeless nature of 

her designs. 

The Essence of The O Jewelry 

Each piece from The O Jewelry is meticulously 

crafted using 18-karat gold, diamonds, 

and a selection of precious and 

semi-precious stones. Shamsa’s commitment 

to excellence is evident in her choice 

of materials, ensuring that each creation is 

not only visually striking but also enduring. 

What sets her jewelry apart is its conceptual 

foundation; Shamsa infuses meaning into 

every design, creating jewelry that tells a 

story and provokes emotion. 

As a conceptual artist, Shamsa applies 

meaning and expression to every piece. 

“As an artist, I found myself forming my own 

creative language, which eventually translated 

into fine jewelry,” she explains. This 

dedication to narrative is particularly evident 

in her special collections, which commemorate 

significant events in the UAE, such as 

Emirati Women’s Day and National Day. One 

notable piece is the “Zayed Bin Sultan 1949” 

necklace, designed to honor Sheikh Zayed, 

the founder of the UAE. This piece, featured 

at Sotheby’s London, exemplifies Shamsa’s 

ability to intertwine cultural heritage with 

contemporary design. 

Ethical Sourcing and Sustainability 

At The O Jewelry, ethical sourcing is a cornerstone 

of the brand’s philosophy. Shamsa 

is dedicated to ensuring that every diamond, 

stone, and piece of gold used in her creations 

is ethically obtained and conflict-free. 

“We are constantly aware of where our diamonds, 

stones, and gold metal originate 

from,” she states. This commitment aligns 

with the growing consumer demand for sustainability 

and reflects Shamsa’s values as 

an artist and a member of the global community.

Shamsa Al Omaira is driven by a desire to

thing. What I have accomplished so far is

KHALID AL NAJJAR

In the vibrant landscape of Dubai’s architectural scene, Khalid Al Najjar 

stands out as a visionary whose work seamlessly blends cultural heritage 

with modern sensibilities. Born in Dubai in 1968, Al Najjar’s journey into 

architecture began with a strong educational foundation, earning a Bachelor 

of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture 

followed by a Master’s from Columbia University. This rigorous academic 

background laid the groundwork for his innovative approach to design, 

one that is both reflective and forward-thinking. 

The Birth of DXB LAB Architecture 

In 2000, Al Najjar founded DXB LAB Architecture, 

a firm that has become synonymous 

with high-quality, context-driven design. His 

portfolio showcases a diverse range of projects, 

from private residences to large-scale 

mixed-use developments. Unlike many of his 

contemporaries, Al Najjar chooses to focus 

on integrating his work within the historical 

fabric of Dubai, enhancing rather than overshadowing 

the existing environment. This 

philosophy not only reflects a deep respect 

for the city’s heritage but also addresses the 

needs of its evolving landscape. 

Cinematic Inspirations 

One of the most intriguing aspects of Al 

Najjar’s approach is his affinity for cinema.

Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch, he infuses 

a cinematic quality into his architectural 

designs. His own home, for example, exemplifies 

this unique perspective. Described as 

a “filmic experience,” the residence presents 

an unassuming facade that conceals 

a vibrant, open interior. This juxtaposition

Al Najjar’s design philosophy emphasizes

home took six years to conceptualize and

process through the challenges of Dubai’s 

bustling real estate market. The result is a 

rectangular structure with a glass facade 

that appears to float above a solid stone 

base, symbolizing the harmony between 

transparency and solidity.

the outdoor spaces of his home, where he 

employs innovative design elements to enhance

Q. Your move to Dubai marked a significant 

milestone for 4Space Design. What 

inspired you to choose Dubai as the base 

for your practice, and how has the city’s 

dynamic growth influenced your work? 

Dubai’s vibrant energy and rapid growth 

were significant factors in choosing it as our 

base. The city is a hub of innovation, with a 

constant demand for forward-thinking design 

solutions. This environment inspires us 

to push boundaries and explore new ideas. 

Dubai’s position as a global city means we 

are exposed to diverse cultures and design 

influences, which naturally enhances the 

depth and creativity of our projects. The 

city’s dynamic growth has been a catalyst 

for our firm to evolve and continue innovating 

with each project. 

Q. You mention that the booming commercial 

sector in the UAE was an impetus for 

exploration. Can you share more about 

how you approached these new opportunities 

and what challenges you faced 

initially? 

When we first entered the UAE market, we 

knew we had to be adaptable and creative in 

our approach to stand out. The commercial 

sector in Dubai is highly competitive, and 

we quickly learned that creating strong client 

relationships and delivering quality work 

would set us apart. One of the main challenges 

was establishing trust and credibility 

as a new firm. However, by consistently delivering 

high-quality projects and maintaining 

open communication with our clients, we 

overcame these initial hurdles and gradually 

gained recognition in the market. 

Q. 4Space Design emphasizes quality

Some of our standout projects include iconic 

venues like JUN’S, PAPA, akabeko, Agora, 

MOLI, and our recent hotel project, NAS 

House. In addition to these, we worked on 

a one-of-a-kind immersive experience in 

Dubai that pushes the boundaries of design 

and technology, offering visitors an entirely 

new way to interact with space. These projects 

reflect our dedication to creating environments 

that are not only visually striking 

but also deeply experiential. Whether it’s a 

restaurant, a bar, or a completely immersive 

venue, we aim to design spaces that resonate 

emotionally and leave a lasting impression. 

Q. Dubai is a melting pot of cultures and 

ideas. How do you incorporate this diversity 

into your design approach to create 

spaces that resonate with a global audience? 

In Dubai, we are constantly inspired by the 

diversity around us. Our design approach 

is about finding a balance between global 

trends and local sensibilities. We embrace 

the cultural mix of the city by creating spaces 

that feel inclusive and familiar to a global 

audience while also paying homage to local 

traditions and aesthetics. This can be seen 

in projects where we combine elements from 

different parts of the world, whether through 

the use of materials, patterns, or even storytelling 

in our spaces. 

Q. The journey from establishing a firm 

to gaining recognition in the UAE market 

is often filled with obstacles. What were 

some of the most challenging moments 

in 4Space Design’s journey, and how did 

you overcome them? 

One of the biggest challenges was finding 

our unique voice in such a saturated market. 

Dubai is home to many established design 

firms, so carving out our niche took time. We 

overcame this by focusing on what makes 

us unique—our futuristic, technology-driven 

approach combined with a deep respect for 

craftsmanship. Another challenge was scaling 

the firm while maintaining the same level 

of quality and personalized service, but with 

the right team and strategic collaborations, 

we were able to navigate this successfully. 

Q. Design trends evolve rapidly, especially 

in a place as forward-thinking as Dubai. 

How do you stay ahead of these trends 

while maintaining the distinct creative 

identity of 4Space Design? 

We stay ahead by continuously exploring 

new technologies, such as AI and immersive 

experiences, which allow us to push 

design boundaries. At the same time, we 

have a clear design philosophy that revolves 

around quality, creativity, and functionality. 

By staying true to this core identity, we can 

incorporate the latest trends without losing 

sight of what makes our designs distinct. We 

also engage in collaborations and participate 

in global design forums, which keeps 

us at the forefront of design innovations.

into your projects, especially in a fastpaced

Sustainability is at the core of many of our 

projects. We aim to create designs that

This means using materials that 

are both innovative and eco-friendly, and integrating 

energy-efficient solutions wherever 

possible. In a city like Dubai, where development 

is constant, we believe it’s our responsibility 

to design spaces that minimize environmental 

impact while still being visually

Q. Building long-term relationships with 

clients is at the core of your business 

model. Can you share an example of how 

a strong client relationship has contributed 

to the success of one of your projects? 

Our long-standing relationship with companies 

like Huawei is a great example. Over 

a year, we’ve built a partnership that allows 

us to collaborate on multiple projects across 

Africa and the Middle East. This trust and 

mutual respect have enabled us to push 

creative boundaries and consistently deliver 

exceptional results. The strength of our relationship 

has not only contributed to the success 

of these projects but has also opened 

doors for us to expand globally. Recently, 

we were honored with the “Outstanding New 

Partner” award in China, which is a testament 

to the success of our collaboration and

cultural preservation, and modern design. 

Welcome to the all-new Designer’s Corner, 

an exciting space divided into four captivating segments 


Ávila draws inspiration from the UAE’s desert, 

oasis, and palm tree landscapes, reflecting the 

deep-rooted cultural values of the region. The 

designer, who hails from Caracas, Venezuela, 

brings a unique global perspective to this project. 

With degrees in Industrial Design from IDC (Caracas) 

and Interior Design from SPD in Milan, Nella Figueroa 

blends his international experience with the artistry of 

local craftsmanship. 

The collection debuted at Dubai Design Week 2023 

and was later showcased at Milan Design Week in 

2024. Each item in Ávila embodies the UAE’s heritage, 

from the traditional clay pots used in the region to store 

water, to modern reimaginings of these timeless forms. 

The water jug and cups are more than just functional 

objects—they are symbols of the region’s nurturing spirit 

and connection to nature. 

Sustainability in Design 

A key aspect of Ávila is its commitment to sustainability. 

The collection is handcrafted using locally sourced 

materials like ceramic, wood, and marble. The locally 

produced ceramic is particularly important, as it draws 

on the region’s long history of pottery-making while embracing 

modern, eco-friendly practices. The water jug, 

for instance, harnesses the natural cooling properties 

of clay, an ideal material for storing water in the UAE’s 

arid climate. 

By using sustainable materials and crafting each 

piece locally, Ávila minimizes its environmental impact,

collection’s versatility allows it to accommodate a range

LAILA AL-YOUSUF 

LEADING THE CHARGE IN 

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN 

Emirati-American Laila Al-Yousuf is a trailblazer 

in the interior design industry, currently serving 

as the design director of SAY Studio. Known 

for her strong emphasis on sustainability and 

wellness, Laila has made significant contributions 

to the design world, particularly in the Middle 

East. In this article, we explore her journey, 

career highlights, and her commitment to driving 

change through thoughtful design. 



Laila’s passion for interior design developed 

early in her life. Even as a child, 

she enjoyed rearranging spaces in her 

home and dreaming up new designs. 

Though her career initially took a different direction, 

she soon realized that she needed a 

creative outlet. This realization led her to study 

interior design and ultimately follow her true 

calling. Her early love for design has grown 

into a successful career, with Laila now leading 

a top design firm in the region. 

SAY Studio and Notable Achievements 

In 2018, Laila co-founded SAY Studio, where 

she now serves as design director. Under her 

leadership, the studio has grown to work with 

some of the biggest names in the corporate 

world, including PwC, Facebook, LinkedIn, 

Google, Pepsi, Uber, and Hewlett Packard 

Enterprise. In 2023, SAY Studio expanded its 


operations, opening a second office in Riyadh, further 

establishing its presence in the region. 

One of Laila’s most remarkable contributions to the 

design world is the Surge for Water Design, Dine, Make 

a Difference competition, which she launched in 2013. 

This initiative challenges designers to create sustainable 

designs while raising awareness of the global 

water crisis. What began as a single competition has 

evolved into a long-running, highly impactful program 

that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Through 

this project, Laila has shown how design can be a force 

for social good, bringing attention to important global 

issues. 

Overcoming Personal Challenges 

In 2022, Laila faced a personal tragedy when she experienced 

a late-term miscarriage. The emotional toll of 

this experience shaped her perspective on design in a 

unique way. Shortly after, she was given the opportunity 

to design a high-risk pregnancy clinic. Despite the 

difficulty of the project, Laila found the process to be 

both healing and rewarding. The clinic, which recently 

opened, offers comfort to women in similar situations, 

reflecting Laila’s belief in the emotional power of design. 

Advocating for Sustainability 

As a LEED AP, Laila is deeply committed to promoting 

sustainability in the design industry. She believes that, 

while the industry has made progress, there is still much 

more that can be done to reduce waste and encourage 

eco-friendly design practices. One of her goals is to 

see more UAE-based manufacturing, allowing materials 

to be recycled and reused rather than ending up 

in landfills. Through initiatives like the Surge for Water 

competition, Laila continues to push the conversation 

forward, advocating for more sustainable design practices 

across the industry.

MOHAMED AHMED IBRAHIM 

A FOUNDATIONAL EMIRATI ARTIST 

Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, born in 1962 in Khorfakkan, is a key figure in the UAE’s 

first generation of contemporary artists. His journey into art began during a time when 

the visual arts were not widely taught or valued in the UAE. Originally working as a police 

officer, Ibrahim’s path shifted after meeting the late Hassan Sharif in 1986. Together, they 

co-founded the Emirates Fine Art Society, helping lay the groundwork for the vibrant creative 

community that defines the UAE today. 




Ibrahim’s art is deeply influenced by his connection to the rugged 

natural landscape of his birthplace, Khorfakkan. Nestled between 

the Gulf of Oman and the Hajar Mountains, the area’s rocky terrain 

plays a significant role in shaping his creative practice. His fascination 

with the environment is evident in his sculptures, installations, 

and drawings, which reflect the raw and organic elements of the 

region, reminiscent of land artists who similarly drew inspiration from 

their surroundings. Ibrahim’s work, like that of Donald Judd’s minimalist 

approach in Texas, resonates with a profound connection to 

place and natural forms. 

A Distinct Artistic Language 

Over the course of his career, Ibrahim has developed a unique visual 

style. His work is filled with bold, abstract symbols and totem-like 

shapes, often compared to ancient cave drawings and primitive 

tools. His sculptures, created from materials like paper-mache, 

cardboard, and found objects, evoke a sense of playfulness and 

spontaneity, yet are grounded in deeper reflection. These works, 

which seem to emerge organically from nature, invite viewers to engage 

both intellectually and emotionally with their forms. This childlike

Exploring “Elevation”: A Journey of Playfulness and Contemplation 

One of Ibrahim’s key recent exhibitions, *Elevation*, delves into 

themes of playfulness and introspection. The artworks in this series 

feature his signature use of bold, colorful shapes and organic forms, 

inviting viewers to engage with the space in an interactive and imaginative 

way. Through this series, Ibrahim introduces anamorphic 

shapes that challenge conventional perceptions, encouraging viewers 

to reflect on their connection to nature and their surroundings. 

By juxtaposing paintings and sculptures, *Elevation* bridges 

two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, creating a harmonious 

interplay that highlights his symbolic motifs. His totem-like 

shapes, often inspired by organic forms such as bones and tree

At VSHD, we are always particular about incorporating

as clean lines, neutral color palettes, and 

high-quality materials that transcend trends. 

We avoid overly trendy design features that 

are simply considered a fad and accordingly 

may quickly become outdated. We 

always prioritize quality craftsmanship and 

durable materials that can withstand the test 

of time and maintain their beauty over time. 

We make sure to invest in timeless furniture 

pieces & fixtures that are built to last and age 

gracefully. Whenever possible, we incorporate 

modular furniture, multi-functional spaces, 

and adaptable layouts that can be easily 

reconfigured or updated as and when needed. 

Depending on the project style, we try 

to choose a timeless color palette consisting 

of neutral tones, earthy hues, and classic

You’re known for blending traditional culture 

with contemporary design. Can you 

share how you balance these two seemingly

We are a research-based design studio. We 

always conduct in-depth research to understand 

the cultural roots, traditions, and values 

that are significant to the client’s background 

or the project’s context. By having 

an understanding of the traditional culture, it 

becomes easier to integrate these elements 

thoughtfully into a contemporary design narrative. 

It is essential for us to show respect 

for the heritage and traditions of the culture 

by honoring and celebrating its unique elements 

rather than diluting or overshadowing 

them with contemporary design; whenever 

possible. By doing that we preserve the 

authenticity of traditional cultural elements 

while infusing a fresh and modern perspective 

to create a dynamic and culturally rich 

space. It is essential however, to ensure that 

these elements are integrated organically 

into the design rather than appearing as an 

unnecessary accessory. We always try to 

create a narrative that weaves together the 

past and present, conveying a sense of continuity, 

evolution, and cultural pride through 

the design elements. It becomes more of a 

storytelling rather than an isolated design 

from anything around it.

Your use of light plays a significant role 

in transforming spaces. How do you conceptualize 

lighting design to serve both 

aesthetic and functional purposes? 

We begin by assessing the layout, function, 

purpose, and ambiance requirements of the 

space to determine the type and intensity 

of lighting needed. We must consider the 

architectural features, focal points, and design 

elements that can be enhanced through 

lighting to create a cohesive visual impact. 

We ensure there is a balance in the different 

lighting layers to provide adequate illumination 

for various activities while adding 

depth, dimension, and mood to the design. 

Whenever we design, we always experiment 

with lighting fixtures, colors, intensities, and 

angles to sculpt and define the space, adding 

drama, warmth, or sophistication to the 

design. Depending on the purpose of the 

space, we always consider the psychological 

impact of lighting on occupants and 

tailor the lighting design to evoke emotions, 

relaxation, focus, or productivity as required. 

Natural light is a luxury. It is serene, calm 

and simply natural. We always integrate 

natural light in our designs to reduce energy 

consumption and promote sustainability 

without compromising on aesthetics. In a 

nutshell, we are considerate of the comfort, 

well-being, and visual comfort of occupants 

by designing lighting that reduces glare, 

shadows, and eye strain while enhancing 

the overall user experience.

some of your favorite projects? 

Throughout the years, whether it was a home 

or a commercial space, we have managed to 

successfully achieve a harmonious balance 

between modesty and elegance through 

thoughtful design decisions and attention to 

details. This was made possible by ensuring 

some of the below aspects: 

Modesty: The design embraces clean 

lines, simple forms, and a neutral color palette, 

reflecting a sense of simplicity and understated 

elegance. 

Elegance: Strategic use of high-quality 

materials such as natural stone, rich wood 

finishes, and custom lighting fixtures adds 

a touch of sophistication and luxury to the 

space. 

Balance: By keeping the design restrained 

yet refined, we have created a 

tranquil and timeless interior that exudes a 

sense of calm and refinement. 

What are some of the most challenging 

aspects of designing spaces in different 

cultural contexts, such as in the Middle 

East versus North America or Europe? 

Designing spaces in different regions & cultures 

presents a unique set of challenges 

that require us to be sensitive to local customs, 

traditions, and preferences. Some of 

the most challenging aspects we face when 

working in regions like the Middle East compared 

to North America or Europe are: 

Middle East: 

Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding and respecting 

local customs, traditions, and values 

is crucial when designing for the Middle 

East. Factors such as gender segregation, 

religious considerations, and cultural symbolism 

must be taken into account to ensure 

that the design is appropriate and respectful. 

Climate Considerations: The harsh desert 

climate in many Middle Eastern countries 

requires thoughtful consideration of 

elements such as shading, ventilation, and 

cooling systems to create comfortable and 

sustainable spaces that are adapted to the 

climate conditions. 

Luxury and Opulence: In some Middle 

Eastern regions, there is a preference for 

luxurious and opulent interiors that reflect 

status and wealth. Balancing this desire for 

lavishness with a modern and functional design 

can be a challenge but yet achievable 

through a proper design philosophy. 

Europe & USA: 

Cultural Diversity: Designing in regions 

like North America or Europe with a diverse 

population and varying cultural influences 

always requires us to take a nuanced approach 

to cater to different tastes and preferences. 

We must consider the multicultural 

aspects of the community to create inclusive 

and welcoming spaces. 

Regulatory Differences: Building codes, 

regulations, and standards can vary significantly 

between regions, requiring our studio 

to adapt our designs to comply with local 

requirements while maintaining the intended 

aesthetic and functionality. 

Historical Context: In Europe, for example, 

the rich historical context and architectural 

heritage of many cities can pose a challenge 

for us when designing new spaces. 

Balancing modern design interventions with 

existing structures while preserving cultural 

heritage can be a delicate task. Having said 

so, it is a great challenge for any design firm.

specific materials, craftsmanship, and construction 

techniques varies to some degree 

across regions which requires us to adapt 

our designs based on local availability and 

expertise. 

Perception of Design: What is considered 

elegant, practical, or functional can

expectations and interpretations of 

design solutions. This particular factor can 

stand true even among clients in the same 

region or country. 

6. Sustainability and longevity are 

key themes in modern architecture. How 

do you incorporate sustainable practices 

into your designs while maintaining luxury 

and elegance? 

At VSHD, we always strive to choose sustainable 

materials such as reclaimed wood, 

bamboo, cork, and recycled glass to reduce 

environmental impact while adding a touch 

of elegance and uniqueness to the design. 

We always opt for high-quality, durable materials 

that not only enhance luxury but also 

contribute to the longevity of the space, reducing 

the need for frequent replacements. 

We always incorporate in our selection energy-efficient 

systems such as LED lighting, 

smart thermostats, and high-performance 

insulation to minimize energy consumption. 

Can you walk us through your creative 

process, from the initial concept development 

to the final execution of a project? 

It all starts with the client Meeting. It is rather 

important for us as a design studio to make 

sure that the client has a full understanding 

of the importance of an original and genuine 

design rather than implementing replicas or 

repeated ideas that he or she had seen in 

pictures. It is all about being on the same 

page. Once this is established, we make 

sure we have a full understanding of the 

client’s preferences, requirements, budget, 

and timeline for the project. 

We then move to the Site Assessment 

where we evaluate the space, consider architectural 

features, lighting, and spatial 

layout. 

Once we and the client have a complete 

understanding and our offer has been approved 

we start with the Concept Development. 

As a research based studio, we start 

conducting our research and explore rooms 

for inspiration: Gather inspiration from client 

inputs, trends, art, & architecture. We then 

start creating mood boards, color palettes, 

and material samples to visualize the design 

direction. 

Once the Concept Design has been approved 

by the client, we move to the Schematic 

Design phase where we utilize 3D renderings 

to create visual representations of 

the design concept to the client. During this 

phase, the client can visualize how exactly 

the space will look like. We also present the 

client with preliminary furniture choices, materials 

and fabrics. At this stage it is crucial 

to get the client’s feedback in order to incorporate 

his/her inputs and make any necessary 

adjustments to the design; if needed. 

Once the schematic phase has been 

completed and approved, we move to our 

Working Drawings; a detailed level of drawings 

against which the contractor will execute 

the project. The drawings include all 

types of finishes, materials, specifications 

which the contractor will have to adhere to. 

During construction, it is crucial that we 

implement a stringent Project Management 

approach to ensure that the design intent is 

executed exactly as the design intent and 

that all materials and workmanship meet the 

desired standards of our studio. We then 


compile a comprehensive snag list for any 

corrections that the contractor might need 

to do. 

Once the handover is done, it is crucial for 

us to evaluate the Client Satisfaction which 

entails following up with the client to ensure 

his/her satisfaction with the overall design 

and address any post-installation concerns. 

We always make sure that our relationship 

with the client is a long term one for potential 

future projects as well as referrals. 

You’ve worked on both residential and 

commercial spaces globally. How do the 

design considerations differ when working 

on personal homes versus business 

environments? 

There are naturally so many factors that we 

have to consider when we design a residence 

as opposed to a commercial space. 

These factors could be: 

Residential Spaces: 

Personalization: Design revolves around 

reflecting the homeowner’s lifestyle, tastes, 

& preferences. 

Comfort and Functionality: Emphasis on 

creating cozy, functional spaces that cater to 

the family’s needs. 

Privacy: Incorporating private areas like 

bedrooms and personal spaces for relaxation. 

Aesthetic Appeal: Focus on creating a 

warm, inviting atmosphere that resonates 

with the home owners. 

Commercial Spaces: 

Brand Identity: Design elements align with

and rich cultural heritage. Amidst the vibrant celebrations, fashion 

designer Rawdha Thani emerged as a key figure in bridging tradition 

and modernity through her innovative brand, illi. This young Emirati 

designer is reshaping the landscape of modest fashion while honoring 

the deep-rooted craftsmanship of her homeland. 

The Birth of illi 

Founded on November 11, 2020, illi encapsulates 

Rawdha’s lifelong fascination with 

celestial beauty and cultural storytelling. 

With a background in architectural design 

and visual arts, she channels her creativity 

into crafting abayas that not only reflect the 

strength and individuality of modern women 

but also celebrate Emirati heritage. “At illi, we 

believe that fashion is a form of self-expression—a 

way to tell your story without words,” 

Rawdha shares, emphasizing her mission to 

empower women through her designs. 

Rawdha’s journey into fashion was not just 

a career choice but a deep-seated dream 

nurtured over the years. The pandemic provided 

her with the reflective space needed 

to bring her vision to life. “During that time, I 

found a strong creative flow of ideas. I knew 

it was the right moment to dive in,” she recalls. 

This decisive moment allowed her to 

explore her heritage and transform it into 

contemporary fashion. 

Crafting a Contemporary Narrative 

The essence of illi lies in its ability to blend 

traditional Emirati craftsmanship with modern 

aesthetics. Rawdha draws inspiration 

from the skills and stories of the Emirati 

craftswomen, many of whom have honed 

their techniques for generations. In a recent 

conversation with heritage protector Atika 

bint Ali bin Taresh Al Mehairbi, Rawdha explored 

the importance of preserving these 

traditions. “I have been learning this craft 

since I was seven years old,” Atika noted, 

revealing the deep familial connections embedded 

in Emirati crafts. 

Illi’s collections pay homage to these traditions 

while adapting to the contemporary 

woman’s lifestyle. Rawdha integrates elements 

like Al-Talli and sadu—age-old weaving 

techniques—into her designs, ensuring

Seamless Fusion of Art and Architecture 

Arabic calligraphy is integrated into the villa’s 

design as both ornamentation and structural 

element, transforming the residence 

into a living canvas. 

Courtyards with Purpose 

The villa’s layout centers around courtyards, 

each crafted with specific functions, from a 

sunken sitting area in the majlis courtyard to 

a terrace overlooking the pool. 

Materials and Craftsmanship 

Using stone, metal, and glass mosaics, regional 

artists recreated traditional calligraphy 

in unique forms, ensuring that the art is 

intrinsic to the structure. 

Kufic Script Carvings 

The villa’s exterior features white stone with 

carved Kufic script, establishing an artistic

Dubai Design Week is the largest design festival in the region, dedicated to 

showcasing local talent and exploring the potential of design. As a reflection 

of Dubai’s status as the Middle East’s design capital, the festival features 

a diverse program, including installations, new commissions, exhibitions, 

talks, workshops, and a marketplace, alongside the premier contemporary 

design fair, Downtown Design. 

Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin 

Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture, the event is strategically 

partnered with Dubai Design District (d3) and supported by Dubai Culture. 

Abu Dhabi Art Fair 

Manarat Al Saadiyat 

20 November 2024 – 24 November 2024 

The Abu Dhabi Art Fair is set to take place from November 20 to 24, 2024. 

This event goes beyond the traditional art fair concept, focusing on a diverse 

public engagement program that includes art installations, exhibitions, talks, 

and events throughout the year. The highlight of this year-long initiative is the 

Abu Dhabi Art event in November, which serves as a vital sales platform for 

participating galleries. It also allows galleries to showcase ambitious installations 

and site-specific works by their artists to a broad audience. 


Sharjah International Book Fair 

Expo Centre Sharjah 


The Sharjah International Book Fair, held annually at the Sharjah Expo Centre, 

is one of the largest book fairs globally. Spanning eleven days, it features 

over 400 literary events, including writing workshops, poetry readings, 

and book signings. The fair showcases local favorites, particularly Arabic 

literature on Sharjah, culture, and art. With over 2 million visitors and 1,420 

participating publishers, it attracts literature enthusiasts and travelers alike. 

The event includes diverse genres in more than 210 languages and offers 

family-friendly activities, such as food stalls and cookery demonstrations, 

making it a must-visit for all. 

Tanweer Festival
