초년기

밀스는 뉴욕 웨스트체스터 카운티의 노스살렘에서 한나 오그덴(1791–1850)[2]과 제임스 밀스(1788–1841)의 다섯 번째 아들로 태어났다.그의 외할아버지는 두체스 군 출신으로 뉴욕과 뉴저지의 저명한 오그덴 가문의 일원인 윌리엄 오그덴(1767–1815)[3]이었다.[4]그는 북살렘 아카데미와 산 쾌적한 아카데미에서 교육을 받았다.[2]

경력

1864년, 다른 투자자들과 함께 1860년대와 1870년대에 크게 성장한 캘리포니아 은행을 설립했으나, 수석 출납원인 윌리엄 채프먼 랄스턴의 금융 비리로 무너졌다.밀스는 개인 재산을 이용해 샤론과 함께 은행을 회생시키고 새로운 투자를 유치했으며, 3년 만에 다시 은행이 강세를 보였다.[2]

만년

밀스는 캘리포니아 은행장 연임에서 물러난 지 2년 만인 1880년 뉴욕으로 돌아와 160블레커 거리, 즉 '밀스 하우스 1호'[3] 등 맨해튼의 수많은 건물 개발에 참여했다.그는 또한 미국에서 조직된 최초의 대형 전력 회사 중 하나인 나이아가라 폭포 전력 회사에 투자했다.[3][9]자선사업에 대한 그의 헌신은 많은 자선적이고 문화적인 기관의 게시판에 앉아있는 것을 포함한다.[2]

불이 난 후에 그 땅을 세분하여 팔았는데, 그 땅의 대부분은 바울 W로 갔다. 1953년에 트루데일 건설회사가 되었고, 결국 밀스 고등학교, 스프링 밸리 초등학교, 반도 병원이 되었다.[11][12]샌프란시스코 만과 접해 있는 원래 소유지 중 150 에이커(0.6 km2)는 그의 손자 오그덴 밀스에 의해 임대되어 현재 샌프란시스코 국제공항으로 알려진 밀스 필드에서 사용되었다.

사생활

1854년 9월 5일 엘리자베스 그리피스(1809–1869)의 딸이자 스코틀랜드 태생 제임스 C의 딸 제인 템플턴 커닝햄(1832–1888)과 결혼했다.선구자, 선주였던 커닝햄(1801–1870)[3]그들은 아들 하나와 딸 하나를 낳았다.[13]

죽음과 유산

그는 1910년 밀브래 자택에서 심장마비로 사망해 36,227,391달러 상당의 재산을 남겼다.[16][17][18]그의 유골은 뉴욕 슬리피 할로우에 있는 슬리피 할로우 묘지에 묻히기 위해 동해안으로 반환되었다.[17][19]

그를 위해 이름이 붙여진 많은 지역 기관들에는 카스티일 밀스 병원의 이사벨라 1세, 밀스 에스테이트 주택 구역, 샌프란시스코 밀스 빌딩,[20] 밀스 고등학교 등이 있다.캘리포니아의 밀브래 시는 그의 재산의 이름을 따서 명명되었다.[4]샌프란시스코 공항은 그의 이름을 따서 Mills Field라고 명명되었다.

캘리포니아 주 의회 로툰다에는 이사벨라 여왕이 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스의 초기 항해를 후원하는 모습을 그린 밀스가 기증한 동상이 있다.[21]
