WMLU(91.3 FM)는 버지니아주 팜빌 지역사회에 봉사할 수 있는 허가를 받은 미국의 비상업적 교육 라디오 방송국이다. 이 역은 롱우드 대학이 소유하고 운영한다.[1]
역사
WMLU는 1980년 시험 방송국이자 대학 면허가 낮은 WUTA로 시작했다.[2] 초기 송신기 출력은 10와트로 빠르면 1981년에 와트를 확대할 계획이다. 첫 번째 스튜디오는 롱우드 대학교 자르만 강당 위쪽 구역에 위치해 있었고, 아래층 강당에서 적절한 주간 회의가 열렸다.[3] 1982년 9월부터 1983년 2월 사이에 어느 정도 WUTA가 새로운 장비를 수령하여 설치하였고, 사내 기록 수집이 확대되었다. 이 초기 해 동안 WUTA는 4주간의 변압기 오작동에서부터 리치몬드 외곽의 WTVR 텔레비전 방송국뿐만 아니라 동료 Farmville 라디오 방송국 WFLO-FM과의 간섭에 이르기까지 수많은 기술적 문제를 경험했다.[4][5]
프로그래밍
매일 오후 7시에서 새벽 2시 사이에 학생 프로그래밍과 음악이 들리고, 해리슨버그의 NPR 멤버 스테이션 WMRA의 릴레이가 남은 시간을 채운다.[6][7]
수상 및 수상
WMLU는 2009년 버지니아 방송 협회로부터 비상업적/공공적 라디오 방송국의 우수 스포츠 커버리지로 1등 상을 받았다.[8][9] 2010년 후원 행사 최우수 홍보상 수상과 함께 이 같은 성과를 반복했다. 2011년 WMLU는 우수 스포츠 커버리지로 1등상을 수상했으며 후원 이벤트로 최우수 프로모션을 받았다.[10][11] 이 방송국은 2011년, 2012년, 2013년에 연속 3회, 4회, 5회 연속 우수 스포츠 커버리지 상을 수상하며 그들의 유산을 이어갔다.

Some time in the future, the radio station would like to expand to 100 watts, and become stereo, thus securing WUTA's place on 90.1 FM dial. The station would also like to be an official member of the FCC, instead of test broadcasting.

Alright, this is WUTA 90.1 F.M. on your radio dial. We're located atop Jarman auditorium, hitting you with 10 big watts . . . now for a little Stivie Nicks off her Belladonna LP . . . The album starts. The clock moves. Slower. The thump continues. WUTA has already started nightly programming and is eagerly awaiting the FCC decision as to whether they can increase their wattage or install a signal splitter.

The long off-air layoff we had last semester was not due to laziness or lack of interest, but due to the fact that we were busy installing almost all new equipment.

Faced with poor funding and a small group of supporters, the Longwood Radio Association has been plagued with inoperative periods throughout the current semester. The longest lasted nearly four weeks, beginning when the station's transformer [sic] broke down in late October. [...] At present, smaller problems are being dealt with, such as the station's interference with Richmond's TV channel six (WWBT) [sic]. When both Farmville station WFLO and WUTA are in operation, reception of channel six has been poor across campus as well as in Farmville. Interference between the two stations has created a jamming signal in the past, but WUTA solved the problem last week. Reception of WWBT is now free of interference. [This article confuses WWBT and WTVR-TV, which actually occupied channel 6 in Richmond.]
