Elk Grove is located at 38°26′N 121°17′W (38.4333, -121.2833). It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.2 square miles (109.3 km2), of which, 41.8 square miles (108.1 km2) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.2 km2) of it (1.02%) is water.

Elk Grove is home to a variety of businesses, including a number of large employers. The city is home to the corporate headquarters of Intel, Kaiser Permanente, and Sutter Health. It is also home to the regional headquarters of AT&T, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo.

As of the 2010 census, there were 153,015 people, 53,945 households, and 38,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,664.2 people per square mile (1,415.3/km2). There were 56,945 housing units at an average density of 1,361.5 per square mile (525.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 64.2% White, 8.2% African American, 1.1% Native American, 11.2% Asian, 0.6% Pacific Islander, 8.2% from other races, and 6.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.5% of the population.
