Modesto Summary
Modesto, California is a city located in the Central Valley of California, approximately 90 miles east of San Francisco. The area that is now Modesto was originally inhabited by the Yokuts people, who were later displaced by Spanish settlers in the late 18th century. The city was founded in 1870 by William C. Ralston, a banker and entrepreneur from San Francisco. He named the city after his friend, William Chapman Modesto. The city was incorporated in 1884 and quickly became a major agricultural center in the Central Valley.
In the early 20th century, Modesto was a major hub for the California fruit industry. The city was also home to the first McDonald’s restaurant, which opened in 1948. In the 1950s, Modesto experienced a population boom as the city became a major destination for the “Dust Bowl” migrants from Oklahoma and Texas.

The city is bordered by the Tuolumne River to the north and the San Joaquin River to the south.
