Ansonia was founded in 1844 by Anson Phelps, a wealthy New York businessman. He named the city after his father, Anson Phelps. The city was incorporated in 1889.
Ansonia was once a thriving industrial center, with many factories producing a variety of products, including clocks, brass, and copper products. The city was also home to the Ansonia Copper and Brass Company, which was founded in 1845 and was one of the largest copper and brass manufacturers in the world.

The city is located in the Naugatuck River Valley, which is part of the Great Valley of Connecticut. The city is bordered by the towns of Derby to the north, Seymour to the east, and Shelton to the south.

There were 7,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
