History
The history of Islamorada, Florida dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorers first arrived in the area. The Spanish named the area “Isla Morada” which translates to “Purple Island” due to the abundance of purple flowers that grew in the area. The area was then inhabited by the Tequesta Indians who were the original inhabitants of the Florida Keys. The Tequesta Indians were a peaceful tribe that lived off the land and sea.
