Southchase Summary
Southchase is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,744 at the 2010 census.
History
Southchase was originally part of the large tract of land known as the “South Chase” that was owned by the South Chase Land Company. The company was formed in the late 1950s by a group of investors who wanted to develop the area for residential and commercial use. The area was annexed by the City of Orlando in the late 1960s and was later incorporated into Orange County in the early 1970s.
Geography
Southchase is located at 28°25'25" North, 81°20'45" West (28.423750, -81.345837). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Southchase is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several large employers, including Lockheed Martin, Siemens, and the University of Central Florida.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,744 people, 4,717 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,817.3 people per square mile (1,092.2/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 1,179.2/sq mi (455.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 74.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $46,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
