Republic Summary
Republic, Kansas is a small city located in the northeastern corner of the state. It is the county seat of Republic County and is situated on the banks of the Republican River. The city has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.
Geography
Republic is located at 39°45'25" North, 97°45'25" West (39.756944, -97.756944). It is situated in the Republican River Valley, which is part of the Great Plains region of the United States. The city is located in the northwest corner of Republic County, and is bordered by Washington County to the north, Cloud County to the east, and Jewell County to the south. The Republican River flows through the city, and is a major source of water for the area.
The city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the surrounding area. The climate is characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters.
History
The area that is now Republic was first settled in the late 1860s by settlers from the eastern United States. The city was founded in 1871 and was named after the Republican River. The city was incorporated in 1873 and was designated as the county seat of Republic County.
The city grew slowly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by the 1920s had a population of around 1,000. The city experienced a period of growth in the 1950s and 1960s, and by the 1970s had a population of around 2,000.
Economy
The economy of Republic is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, wheat, and soybeans. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.
