Cut Off is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the Houma–Bayou Cane–Thibodaux Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Cut Off was 8,138.
History
The area now known as Cut Off was first settled in the early 1800s by French-speaking Acadians. The name “Cut Off” is derived from the fact that the area was cut off from the rest of the parish by a canal. The canal was built in the late 1800s to provide access to the Gulf of Mexico.
Geography
Cut Off is located at 29°30'N 90°25'W (29.50, -90.42). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
Economy
Cut Off’s economy is largely based on fishing, shrimping, and oil and gas production. The area is also home to several seafood processing plants, as well as a number of small businesses.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,138 people, 2,845 households, and 2,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 990.2 people per square mile (382.2/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.4/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.23.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,917. About 15.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
