Needham was first settled in 1680 by settlers from Dedham, Massachusetts. The town was officially incorporated in 1711 and was named after the town of Needham Market in Suffolk, England. The town was home to several factories, including the Needham Button Company, which produced buttons for the military during the Civil War.
In the late 19th century, Needham began to experience a period of rapid growth and development. The town was connected to Boston by the Boston and Albany Railroad in 1844, and the Needham Branch Railroad was built in 1848.
