Waverly, Michigan is a small village located in Shiawassee County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the Shiawassee River, about 10 miles south of Owosso. The village has a population of about 1,000 people and is part of the Owosso-Corunna Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Waverly was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Waverly Corners” and was named after the Waverly novels by Sir Walter Scott. The village was incorporated in 1867 and the first post office was established in 1868.
In the late 19th century, Waverly was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 20th century, Waverly began to decline as the railroad bypassed the village. The mills closed and the population began to decline. In the 1950s, the village was revitalized with the construction of a new school and the opening of a new post office.
