History
White Pigeon was first settled in 1827 by a group of Potawatomi Indians led by Chief White Pigeon. The village was named after the chief, who was killed in a battle with the United States Army in 1812. The village was incorporated in 1837 and became the county seat of St. Joseph County in 1844.
