History

Pequot Lakes was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was originally known as "Pequot", but the name was changed to "Pequot Lakes" in 1895 to reflect the many lakes in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1901.

The city was named after the Pequot Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Pequot Indians were a tribe of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who lived in what is now Connecticut.

Pequot Lakes is located at 46°37′N 94°14′W (46.619, -94.233). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races.
