Imperial Summary
Imperial is a city located in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,637 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area.
History
Imperial was founded in 1891 by the Imperial Land Company, which was formed by a group of St. Louis businessmen. The city was named after the Imperial Hotel, which was located in downtown St. Louis. The city was incorporated in 1895.
In the early 1900s, Imperial was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several large farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city was also home to a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1895.
In the 1950s, Imperial began to experience a population boom. This was due in part to the construction of the nearby Pevely Dairy, which provided jobs for many of the city's residents. The city also experienced a surge in population due to the construction of the nearby Interstate 55, which provided easy access to St. Louis.
Geography
Imperial is located at 38°20'25" North, 90°30'45" West (38.340278, -90.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Imperial is home to a number of businesses, including a number of small retail stores, restaurants, and service providers. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including Imperial Manufacturing, which produces a variety of products, including automotive parts and components.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,637 people, 1,039 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,183.2 people per square mile (457.7/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 487.2 per square mile (188.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.76% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.76% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females.
