Liberty Summary
Liberty, Missouri is a city located in Clay County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of downtown Kansas City. The population was 29,149 at the 2010 census. Liberty is the county seat of Clay County.
History
The area that is now Liberty was first settled in 1822 by European-American settlers. The town was originally known as “Chouteau’s Store”, named after the fur trader Auguste Chouteau. In 1829, the town was renamed “Liberty” after the American Revolutionary War hero, General Samuel Liberty.
In 1833, the town was officially incorporated as the City of Liberty. The city was a major stop on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, which ran through the city from 1869 to 1988.
Geography
Liberty is located at 39°14′45″N 94°25′17″W (39.245833, -94.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Liberty is home to several large employers, including Cerner Corporation, a health care information technology company, and Hallmark Cards, Inc., a greeting card company. Other major employers include Liberty Hospital, the Liberty School District, and the City of Liberty.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 29,149 people, 11,845 households, and 7,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,811.3 people per square mile (700.2/km2). There were 12,845 housing units at an average density of 796.3 per square mile (307.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,902, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females.
