Columbus Summary
Columbus is a city located in North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Burke County and is located in the northwest corner of the state. The population of Columbus was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Columbus was first settled in 1883 by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The town was named after Christopher Columbus, the explorer. The first post office was established in 1884. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Columbus was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a lumberyard, a creamery, and a flour mill.
Geography
Columbus is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 85 and North Dakota State Highway 5. It is situated in the northwest corner of Burke County, approximately 20 miles from the Montana border. The city is located on the banks of the Little Muddy River.
The terrain around Columbus is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is semi-arid, with cold winters and hot summers.
